There are a few different aspects to my PhD project. Broadly it’s about how people process violence in music to be able to achieve positive outcomes. This has involved looking at what cognitive strategies people use for more extreme lyrics (changes in perception, memory or conscious reappraisal to alter the meaning of lyrics). We have also been looking at the role of passion for music, the mechanisms responsible for emotional responses to music, as well as how fans define group membership and connect with other listeners - this is the focus of the survey.
