  1. Re: I want to learn how to growl

Was gonna give some more specific advices on the matter, but @BlutAusNerd, @Barbie1989 and @Ranothin handled the situation already in here as well as I know things in my end, so no need for me anymore to add anything. All I can do is link one of my favorite explanations more on the subject of what not to do:
    Thanks for the link. :)
  2. Re: I want to learn how to growl

A friend (and chief growler in his band) tried to teach me how to growl some years ago, I improved but I never really got the hang of it, probably through lack of practice so much as anything else. To the best of my memory he explained it something like this: take a fairly deep breath and sigh, then do this again sighing more forcefully. Practice doing this until you get a short growling sound. Next you need to try to extend the length of your "growl"; by learning to control the air flow you should be able to reduce the force you need to make the noise which will help you extend it's duration. Once you have achieved this you should find it fairly simple to extend your growl to words. If you want to reduce the chance of doing damage to your vocal chords do a warm up first, drink plenty of water and if you feel your throat starting to get sore (which you probably will at some point) give it a break for a while to give things a chance to calm down, similarly it's a good idea to take at least a couple of days off each week to give your voice a chance to recover. I hope this helps, I'd be interested to know how you get on!
Thankyou for the advice, and I'll let you know when I start practising. :)
  3. Re: I want to learn how to growl

I used to be able to get a fairly good growl going' date=' it was something I taught myself when I was still listening to black and death metal, I can't do it anymore though, but I do know the key is to not growl through your throat if you can help it, I see thats the advice most people seem to be giving you so I'm probably not telling you anything new[/quote'] Thanks for the advice. :)
  4. Re: I want to learn how to growl

I've recently had to take over vocal duties in my band' date=' and I never understood it under actually getting up and doing it. You have to stand up, open your mouth and throat, and start making an "aaaaaahhhhhhhh" noise without the air grabbing your throat anywhere. Give yourself a slight push under the ribcage while doing this and feel the air force it's way out, you should feel your diaphragm doing the pushing. Now, try changing the tone from your diaphragm without the assistance of your throat, then try shaping your throat to make your growls. It takes time to build up the muscles to do what you want them to, as I'm currently working on digging deep into the bottom of my stomach for the force of the super low growls. I play guitar, so I can't cheat and cup the mic to achieve this artificially, and it takes a great deal of effort, at least currently. I'm hoping it gets less intensive, but at the same time I don't, I love the feeling I get from exerting force from my whole body while playing.[/quote'] Thanks so much for the explanation. I hope everything goes well with your band. :)
  5. Re: I want to learn how to growl

I have some freinds That's trying to teach me how to growl' date=' It's hard to use the ''Insides'' or something, I can't really Growl for the stomach, And the Youtube videos doesn't really help, And it doesn't exist so many good either, i can only think of Giong to a vocal/singing teacher, that must be the easiest way, i think[/quote'] Yeah, I agree about the youtube videos. I could maybe think about going to a vocal teacher and learning about metal singing as well as growling, but I can't sing in front of people. Maybe I could get over that though.
  6. Re: band t'shirts! Only three so far. Would be quite awesome to have some more. Dimmu Borgir - Abrahadabra Arch Enemy - Rise Of The Tyrant Chthonic - Doris Death :D All of these are quite big even though I got them all in small.. Maybe I should get some in women's fit instead. :L

  7. Re: I want to learn how to growl

not stomach :P diaphragm :D i know how piss annoying it is when teachers tell you to think about singing from your insides, whenever someone tells me to sing from my diaphragm i'm always grossed out and i don't know what they're talking about anyway :L
Haha, I know. I've watched loads of videos with growling lessons and I just don't understand :L
  8. Re: I want to learn how to growl

I know it's embarrassing when your starting out but why don't you post a video up. I think you would get some good feedback then' date=' maybe a video feedback! That would be funny. A thread full of growling videos! :)[/quote'] Haha, yeah that would be funny. But I just don't know how to growl using my stomach. :? Yes, it would be very embarrasing. :P
  9. Re: I want to learn how to growl

One thing i know' date=' use your stomach, not your throat. You will eventually pass out if you use your throat. I'm talking from experience 'ere.[/quote'] Yeah, I've been trying to use my stomach and not my throat. But the thing is, I just don't know how to..
  10. Re: CLOTHES I love to wear gothic clothes. When I'm dressing casual, I just wear an alternative t-shirt or one of my band t-shirts and jeans. At the moment, the band t-shirts I have are Dimmu Borgir, Arch Enemy and Chthonic. When I'm dressing up, I love to wear corsets and skirts, usually with fishnet tights, a choker and Doc Martens. I have a pair of long black DMs with red roses on them and a pair of black DM shoes which I wear for school. Also, I love crazy hair colours and piercings. Unfortunatly, I'm not allowed unnatural hair colours or piercings for school - I've been told a few times about my nose piercing, but I still wear it. I've also got a lot of crap at school for my hair style, which is shaved at one side and longer at the other side. Apparently that's "inappropiate". In the last summer holidays, I dyed my hair green, and next year I'm thinking of dying it turquoise or blue. Currently, my hair colour is a reddish purple which I luckily haven't recieved many complaints about at school. The piercings I have now are the normal ear lobe piercing and my nose in the right nostril. I used to have my left cartilage pierced, but that closed up.. I'm thinking about getting it done again though sometime.. :D

  11. Re: I want to learn how to growl

Never sing/growl with your vocal chords. Diaphragm only. My vocalist says it's something that he's always been able to do. He also took regular singing lessons ages back and learned that as long as you don't use your throat/vocal chords to sing/growl you won't do any damage. To that end, you can repair most damage done to you vocal chords should they become damaged through a variety of breathing and vocalizing exercises. In short, everyone has their own way of doing it. It boils down to you either can or can't. Some have it and some don't. I am one who doesn't have it and it annoys me all the time.
    Thanks for the advice. :)
  12. Re: I want to learn how to growl

Funny, I'd recommend drinking and eating a fair amount and then trying to growl. You will end up sounding absolutely awesome for a little while since your throat will be coated with spit. Hence you could do guttural stuff pretty well. Now bear in mind, I'm not a professional of any type nor am I a singer or growler. I just do this for fun after lunch. :D
    Thanks, I'll try that. :)
