I am quite the oxymoron! I actually used to play bass in Nevertanezra as well. My absolute favorites would be: Crowbar, Candiria, Acid Bath, Soilent Green, Ion Dissonance, Rotten Sound, C.O.C., Down, Leng Tch'e, Fuck the Facts, Sleep, Armored Saint, Primus, Morbid Angel, Mortification, (Hed) P.E., Deftones, the Warriors, Every Time I Die, Public Enemy, a Tribe Called Quest, Burnt by the Sun, Brutal Truth, Mercyful Fate, Jungle Rot, the Mars Volta, the Red Chord, Decapitated... I'm just trying to put the ones I listen to all the time, I swear!

Oh, my favorites... Hmm.... I'll try to keep the list short. Swallow The Sun, Children of Bodom, In Flames, Callenish Circle, Dismember, Quo Vadis, Insomnium, Eternal Tears of Sorrow, ...And Oceans, Whitechapel, Arch Enemy, All That Remains, Years Since The Storm, Trivium, Killswitch Engage, Dope, Stone Sour, Soilwork, Slayer, Parkway Drive, Paradise Lost, Pantera, Motorhead, Metallica, Megadeth, Winds Of Plague, FFDP, Disturbed, Lamb of God, Mudvayne... I'll stop there to save some typing for myself and some reading for you. Those are...some...of my favorites.

Haha, I know I had to stop myself as well! I like your diversity. I'm getting way into Dismember recently, and I need to listen to Swallow the Sun since they have been recommended to me multiple times. I see a more melody-driven undercurrent to your list (for the most part). We definitely share some similar tastes though!

This is definitely a unique forum. I spent 3 years looking for a new one after being on Dead Frontier's for so long... This was worth the wait, in my opinion. As for the melody-driven undercurrent, you couldn't be more right. My favorite music is always melodic or symphonic. My favorite genre is melodeath. Symphonic Black Metal is nearing close, I just need to find more bands I can get into.

Re: Greetings, salutations, hello!

Actually I happened upon one of your posts concerning my band haha. I have been looking for a good place to share intelligent musical discussion... it seems to be a rare find in internet land!
Nice, hope you stick around, this place is starting to get more and more regulars. I like the atmosphere here, minimal flaming and elitism, mostly good people. And yes Steve, Kyle plays in a metalcore band called Burn Your World. They're legitimate metalcore as opposed to emocore, mixing death metal, sludge, grind, black metal, and thrash with hardcore punk, and are really fucking good. You should give them a listen, as well as bands like Trap Them if you want to hear what good metalcore sounds like! Sent from my HTC PH39100 using Tapatalk 2

I would be more compelled to listen if you were on Spotify. Still gave you a listen, and I must say, you're pretty damn good. Though, I was sadly reminded of "hardcore dancing" or whatever the technical term might be... Mosh pits are great, but having a bunch of people awkwardly flailing around is a bit odd.
Thanks for the info, I will definitely have to check out Spotify! Is there any particular reason you prefer it? I have only tried a few similar sites, and I seem to prefer Bandcamp. Also, thank you for your honest input! We do like a little bit of the mosh vibe, but we hope it just adds to the whole vibe of heaviness. Our new stuff is darker... We'll have a full-length out soon!

Yes, I'm totally feeling a good sense of community here. Also, good heads up on Trap Them! I always forget to mention them concerning good metalcore.

Spotify is where I store my entire collection of music. I like it due to the ease of finding music I want to, how I can create playlists, and how I can use it to find new bands. Also how I can download albums I want straight to my phone through it. Anyway, I'm not trying to advertise Spotify. You should get on the Forum Games subforum, by the way. ^^ In regards to Trap Them, they're alright I guess. For metalcore I prefer more Parkway Drive, Killswitch Engage, and other bands like those I listed in my short list of favorites.

Thanks for the Spotify recommendation, I'll definitely check it out. Also checking out forum games! Two of my personal favorites concerning metalcore are Harlots and the up-and-coming Reaping Asmodeia. Harlots - Full Body Contortion - YouTube Reaping Asmodeia "Poison Of The Earth" Unfinished Mix - YouTube They both mix the melodic stuff with brutality and even some shred! I hope you dig it!

Harlots doesn't appear metalcore at all to me. Maybe some sort of deathcore... They sound pretty decent. Welp, neither does Reaping Asmodeia. Guess we have different interpretations of metalcore. Enjoying both of the bands though. Luckily enough, Harlots has two albums on Spotify. Sadly, the better band of the two has none. :( As an edit: I find Harlots are more classified as Grindcore. All in all, fuck all these subgenres.

G'Day and welcome Kyle, I think we now have our first pair of metal brothers on here :) I've yet to encounter any metalcore bands I've actually liked but in fairness to the genre most of the metalcore bands I've encountered have a heavy pop vibe about them now let's see a short list of favourite bands... Nevertanezra, Avernus, Arsis, Paradise Lost, Bathory, Melechesh, Dissection, Benediction, Nile, Coroner, Artillery, Absu, Orphaned Land, My Dying Bride, Sepultura (pre-Roots), Vektor, Mournful Congregation, Necromantia, Blind Guardian, Iron Savior, Mercyful Fate, D.R.I, Master's Hammer, Quo Vadis, Rush and oh so many more

I should probably stop talking out of my ass. Sadly' date=' that's a quality which seems to define me.[/quote'] Well I often type without thinking and get myself into some shit... so I totally understand haha! That being said, I don't think you're talking out the pooper. Most people classify metalcore as a very specific subgenre, I use it as more of an umbrella term. I could go into more details (I actually have a lot to say on the subject), but maybe another time.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
