Re: I'm losing interest in metal, WHY?!? ^ Exactly, one can only spin the same albums especially if you're only narrowly listening to staples, i,e Judas Priest, Sabbath, Maiden, Motorhead, etc. Check some of the recommendations we've listed in prior threads, and the same rule generally applys to even extreme metal bridge out and listen to a as many bands frome every subgenre as you can.

Re: I'm losing interest in metal, WHY?!? It sounds like you need a change of scenery. Burnout happens to everyone at some point that's why you need to mix it up. If you mostly listen to fast, uptempo music STOP! Start listening to slower, morose music. If you mostly listen to music with clean vocals STOP! Start listening to the growled/shrieked styles, or if it's predominately male start listening to female vocalists. There are a number of ways to get through things like this. Take a break, go out side the style for a bit then come back.

Re: I'm losing interest in metal, WHY?!? Relax. Take a musical palate cleanser, as the others have said. Try a few other types of music, different styles within metal, and maybe some time to just not worry about it. Music will be there. Case in point: I like black metal, but today I was listening to a black metal station online, and it just ticked me off for some reason. So I switched over to a talk station, and it helped to get the 'crowded' feeling out of my mind. When I listen to some metal later in the week, it'll probably be better. :)

Re: I'm losing interest in metal, WHY?!? Dare I say it but maybe you're "maturing"?? I don't know your age exactly (I think it's mid to late teens?) but I knew a lot of guys who decided one day that this whole metal thing was "just a phase" that they grew out of (then again none of them posted on a metal forum every single day) so hopefully that's not what's happening here. But yeah if all else fails even listening to Top 40 crap on the radio for a while is a great palate cleanser- makes you appreciate how awesome metal really is!

Re: I'm losing interest in metal, WHY?!? my suggestion Dave is not to force it, if you don't feel like listening to metal that's fine throw something else on and chill, it's always good to take a break from metal now and then to avoid burning out couldn't hurt to check out some other styles and mix up what you're used to with some more extreme bands though I have a little trick, if you find yourself always listening to the same band i.e. Iron Maiden delete their stuff from your iPod or computer or whatever, or get someone you trust to hide the cds somewhere for a few months and dive into whatever is at the lower end of your stockpile, I've had to do this on more then one occassion so I know it works

to be honest i don't like anything other than metal, i quite like 80's pop/electronic and some techno though, classical is ok.

Re: I'm losing interest in metal, WHY?!? then you may need to expand your metal horizons, check out some of the traditional power metal bands that were around the same time as Helloween, Blind Guardians's Nightfall In Middle Earth is a very good starting point, or check out melodeath bands like Arch Enemy and Dark Tranquility to get accustomed to harsher vocals, just listening to trad/NWOBHM and thrash is sure to burn you out of the metal world I like black, death, doom, folk, power, progressive and thrash metal, plus hard rock, blues, punk and classical music so I never get bored of the music I listen to as I'm always changing it up

If you're a Maidan fan try listening to more power metal. Jag Panzer, Lost Horizon and Hibria are good bands to try out if you like Priest and Maiden. You may also want to check out Dungeon. Oh, and Cage. Definitely check out Cage, they should be roughly what you're looking for.

Re: I'm losing interest in metal, WHY?!? I had a bit of an issue with harsh vocals to begin with, I'm over that now but if you start looking at melodeath which generally has less extreme growling, otherwise trad doom and power metal bands or prog bands could be worth a look, futures end is a particularly good prog band, very good vocals and outstanding musically

I'm losing interest in metal, WHY?!? As others have said, try some of the other metal genres, expand your view of metal. There's loads of metal I can't stand but loads more I love. You can always lock yourself in a room for a couple of day with only the top 40 playing or RnB shite. That will get you back on track or send you mental. :-) I often listen to classical, that can be just as good as metal.

Re: I'm losing interest in metal, WHY?!?

Tell you what I do like' date=' the start of infinite dreams, sounds quite prog rocky, and good prog rock bands? I like Marillion, Hawkwind And Jethro Tull at the moment.[/quote'] Try Triumph then, they were one of the first bands I liked. Otherwise, if you like prog rock, just go for it. My guess is by the time you've listened to a lot of it you may want to go back to your metal. For example, I got into an industrial phase just recently, but I'm sort of coming out of it now.

I'm losing interest in metal, WHY?!?

I'm really going for black metal at the moment' date=' the last few days it's all I've listened to, as I type I've got Bathory's Born For Burning turned way the hell up[/quote'] always found black metal too dark for me, not fussed about it but of course venom are godly.

Re: I'm losing interest in metal, WHY?!? it is a very sinister genre, and there are some bands I have heard of which I would never listen to but for the most part it's harmless, much like Venom most lack metal bands aren't really Satanic, they just like to look and sound demonic and that's something I can appreciate

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
