Re: Dungeons and Dragons I play. Both D&D and MtG. We have one campaign that has been going on about three or so years because we have rarely our whole group together... We had another campaign also, but it kinda failed due to misunderstandings between our DM and group so we're starting a new campaign on same people soon. In the longer campaign we use 3.5 rules and the upcoming will be on Pathfinder rules. We tried 4th Edition, but it didn't work so well with us... MtG I've been playing for several years now also and tomorrow I'll go check the local strip club since they play EDH/Commander format in there. Just got my EDH deck fixed so we'll see how it goes with the distraction of tits :D

Re: Dungeons and Dragons well I guess the ladies would be used to nerds staring at them lol no offence not into that stuff at all, closest I ever came to that sort of stuff was the yugioh card game when it was popular at my school but that was about twelve years ago and I was ten, hell I hadn't even heard metal back then it was so long ago

Re: Dungeons and Dragons Both my wife and BaN have tried to teach me how to play magic but I'm too dense to get it. I've never played DnD but want too. My wife and I are looking into starting an RPB soon however. I started a thread on the forum games thread with a link that tested you on what DnD character you'd be. I think two people did it.

Not familiar with EDH/Commander format, what exactly does that entail? I haven't played in a while, so I'm not sure if it's a new thing or not. I mostly played in limited, Type 2, and Extended formats (now it's called Legacy I think?), but did dabble in Type 1 and 1.5, but only ever did okay because of not being able to afford Power 9 and other expensive rarities. I haven't played in a while and my cards are packed up, but the urge to play again still sneaks up on me once in a while.

Re: Dungeons and Dragons @BlutAusNerd: Extended and Legacy are different formats. EDH/Commander is something that came up from Canada I think and it's getting more and more attention. First it was just unofficial mode to play, but now WotC (Wizards of the Coast, owner of MtG) has gotten it also included in their supported formats. WotC still gives all rights from inventing the format and handling the rulings for it to the original http://mtgcommander.net site. Basic idea is that you have a deck consisting of 100 different cards (except for basic lands) and one of those is your commander that has to be Legendary Creature. You can summon commander from it's commander post as it would be in your hand and if it would die (go to the graveyard or you would bury it, which ever term suits you) or it would go to exile (remove from the game) you can return it to it's commander post. You have 40 life as starter and can withstand 21 combat damage from opponents commander until you die (you can't heal that). Then it's pretty much the same as usually. Oh yeah, all cards are included (except for really small banlist) and they are playable right after pre-release. I recon to check http://mtgcommander.net and to do a deck for yourself. It's one of the best formats I've ever played :D

Yeah, I got out of the game before Legacy was started, I thought it was sort of a variation of 1.5 but couldn't remember. I got started playing towards the end of Invasion block and played heavily up until the Ravnica block, (excluding a short break in the Kamigawa block), and haven't really played since. I've thought about getting back into it on an online basis, since there aren't really any card shops near me anymore, but it seems like most of the sites charge to play online, so I haven't pursued it much.

Re: Dungeons and Dragons

The other day' date=' since it was gross out, I decided to kill some time by filling out my character sheet! Level 1 Human fighter, Karl-kin the Sun-born! slayer of goblins![/quote'] There is a book series my wife got me hooked on called 'Monster Hunter' and the author is looking into the creation of an RPG. Needless to say my wife busted out her GURPS book and started showing me how to fill out a character sheet. I'm excited to see what comes of the authors game.

Re: Dungeons and Dragons

I play with a group of friends locally. I have a 5th level neutral half-elf wizard named Terileas. Fun game. Now there's talk of a LARPing group forming as well.
Run away now. Run far, FAR away. Roleplaying is one thing....but LARPing is something totally ...just....i don't even want to think about it.

I remember bike riding with my wife a while back at my parents house and seeing four or five teens LARPing. We were amused.

I started in Ravnica so I'm quite new player myself... But been enthusiastically learning the game ever since. Online games are usually little different than what the game is in general. All the rules and triggering effects don't always seem to work as they do in real game with cards. Plus with playing with good guys is always fun :D But as it comes to online playing, you can get and play Magic: The Gathering - Tactics for free from Steam for example, though it's not so much a card game as it's just strategy game with MtG-like graphics. Duels of the Planeswalkers seems to be more like the original card game, but I haven't been able to test it out yet since the money issue. Maybe at some point I'll get it and start playing it also, but now at the moment Diablo 3 is eating all my gaming time :D

  • 1 year later...

I started playing DnD for the first time with a group from my work back in December. It's pretty fun. The first campaign I played I was a dwarven cleric, and I am a human bard on this current campaign. Both of those characters were fun; I like being the character that mainly supplies buffs and does a little bit of fighting. My current campaign is almost over, so I think the next character for a change of pace i'm going to be an orc barbarian or something similar, the kind of character that will just wade into battle and pulp my enemies!

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
