Re: Movies Saw Looper this afternoon. Illogical premise, predictable plot and Joseph Gordon-Levitt looks far too disimilar to the character he portrays, but still solid entertainment due to a smart pace, quality performances, witty writing and some agreeable violence. Recommended (unless you happen to be a type given to thinking hard about this sort of film).

Re: Movies Watched a lot of movies over the weekend, the best of which had to be God Bless America. This middle aged guy gets sick of all of the braindead shit that he sees on TV and decides to go on a killing spree of reality TV stars and celebrity assholes. He picks up a teenage girl along the way, who ends up becoming his friend and aides in his search for and execution of people that they deem to be deserving of death. Fun, yet surprisingly deep and insightful. Also watched Under Still Waters, which was a pretty good drama about a wife and her husband on their way to a vacation that almost hit a stranger in the road. They bring him back to their vacation house to try to help him out, but everything sort of unwinds and tensions build until people start dying. Bitten was just okay, another vampire story that wasn't as funny as it should have been. Also started watching Twin Peaks, I was a bit appalled that I've loved everything I've seen of David Lynch's, yet hadn't seen his widely praised TV show. I only had time for one episode, but I'm hooked.

Re: Movies It's a crying shame that the intact version of Event Horizon is probobly lost forever. Still a cool film in the cut that got released, but I'd love to see the original X/NC17 cut, or even the trimmed but still extended one that got pooh-poohed by test audiences.

Re: Movies alternate ending? now that would be interesting lets try and get a new line of discussion going, worst movie you've ever seen? for me it has to be Halloween 3, it makes no sense, how can you have a Halloween movie without Michael Myers, and as if that isn't bad enough I don't remember any characters from the first two movies, or any characters that would appear in later movies, in fact I don't even think they used the John Carpenter written theme music, and yet posters for the movie and the DVD case have pictures of Myers on them, should sue for false advertising

Re: Movies I don't think there was an alternate ending, but the stories go that the original cut was gruesome enough that it would have gotten an NC17 rating from the MPAA, so the producers had the violence cut down quite significantly. Then that trimmed cut was shown to test audiences, who thought it was still too gruesome and also too long, so scenes of plotting and character development were cut down as well. In total I think some 20 odd minutes were removed in total. Worst movie I've ever seen is Night of Horror, from 1981 or thereabouts (some sources say it was made in '78). I'm the kind of guy who often really likes films that other people say are the worst ever, I'm a big fan of Manos: The Hands of Fate for example. But Night of Horror is neither strange, hypnotic nor amusing in its badness, just unbearably dull. The highlights are a plastic prop skull, a stretch of Civil War re-enactment footage and a smudge on the camera lens. There are films I've disliked more, but Night of Horror is easily the worst I've seen, and I'd say is a candidate for the worst ever made.

Re: Movies in that case I'm glad I have never seen or heard of it, I mean Halloween 3 is bad, honestly the best part of that whole movie is the end credits, but your movie sounds even worse as for Event Horizon it's just a shame it wasn't made more recently, I mean if the saw franchise can get away with showing people being tortured to death for two hours a movie Event Horizon in it's entirety would be fine for audiences

Re: Movies Yeah, I doubt Event Horizon would faze todays viewers much, apart from the supernatural aspect. The Saw franchise kinda makes me laugh actually, I don't much care for them but it amuses me that they've made wince making graphic violence mainstream.

Re: Movies Taste the Blood of Dracula (1970) -This was one of the Draculas that Hammer was too cheap to pay Christopher Lee what he deserved, so his lines are limited. Strong support from the always arrogant Ralph Bates and hottie Linda Hayden keep things moving along nicely. Overall I'd put this behind Dracula Prince of Darkness as the second best sequel in the series.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
