doing something about the one post wonders

Recommended Posts

don't know if I'm the only one who's noticed but lately there's been a few new members that join, post one or two things to promote their band/book/whatever and then leave without contributing anything else to the forum perhaps you guys could impose a block on creating new threads 'til these people reach Metaller status or something so we could at least have them contribute a little bit?

Re: doing something about the one post wonders Well, they're annoying, but right now we're doing what the free market would demand: ignoring them. If they're stagnant for more than a year maybe we can boot them off.

Re: doing something about the one post wonders the issue isn't with them promoting their work, that's good, I'm all for finding new bands, the issue here is that they then contribute NOTHING else to the forum, their sole purpose is to promote then leave rather then promote, discuss their favourite metal bands/genres and actually see what this place has to offer

I think when we hit a higher user count I will make it so that you can't post a new topic until your responded to 20 posts (or something like that)... Any ideas on this guys? We could offer to show a banner for a month to any band how contributes 1000 high quality posts to the forum... Get Metal Forum on the move with the Tapatalk app - \mf/

Re: doing something about the one post wonders

A month is a lot, for a band to have a banner for a month, i would probably say that that band would have to contribute more than just posting to get promoted :P A week sounds more appropriate, imho.

Re: doing something about the one post wonders

just thought I'd bring to your attention a spam message created by jinxtechnologies in the battle metal section of the forum
Banned the email address, the IP and the username. He wont be back. Cheeky bastard... You can also report dodgy posts etc with the little explanation point icon and I will get the message to ban the mofo. Thanks for letting me know though.

Re: doing something about the one post wonders

You're assuming that we have a banner and current photos' date=' lol. We should probably start working on that.[/quote'] Yeah just let me know, if the forum likes you then thats the kind of advert we should be showing. We could also sell you album through this site if you drop ship internationally? That could be a nice way to cover my costs and support our community... (This could be its own thread too)

Re: doing something about the one post wonders

We can also do a blog featuring the shining stars of the forum with photos etc. Perhaps if Iceni or Murph interviews them and they submit photos?!
Murph should be interviewed himself, he's been doing a great job keeping the forum going during this transition. Cool idea, but how would we interview? Poor murph's way out in the boonies and I'm also relatively isolated. Would this be a Skype deal? While we're at it, how can I submit one of my reviews to the blog? Do I have to write it on the admin dashboard?

For interviews of forum members we could just send through a pm a list of questions and then they could reply with answers and a photo / avatar / band logo. And for the blog post, yes the Wordpress dashboard Post then Add New. Then add a featured image and hit the big blue Submit for review button. :-)

Re: doing something about the one post wonders This isn't so much about one post wonders but what happened to the original forum group? Why are the following the only posters? ICENI The Strategos murph1990 satan59 NTNR BlutAusNerd What happened to: Os Abysmi Vel Daath,916kaden, Shadow, MetalForum, Ranothin, dilatedmind, MetalMaiden, Apoc, etc... Some of the aforementioned go to the Metal Forum Round Table to post but only a select few can access that area for some reason. Why bother to post here at all if you're going to the exclusive thread?

TANKS FAH PUDDIN MAH NAME IN CAPS IT MAK MEH FELL EXDRA SPESHUL. :P I know both kaden and Zyggie are busy at college, and I think Apoc and AkselJ are both also busy at music school. I assume MetalMaiden's in the same boat. Ranothin's started posting. But MetalForum is just the alternate persona of dilatedmind, and neither of them post too often, presumably because they're the same person and that person is trying to get the site running again. I'd say just sit tight 'till summer, and they'll all be back. I joined in the summer and there was a LOT more activity then. 'course I might not be on, if everything goes right and I get a job.

Yeah thanks Iceni. I have been working hard to get the site as good as possible. Going to get the chat back again soon too. That'll be sweet. The round table is to talk about ways to promote the forum and to run ideas past each other among mods and me (admin). When things busy up a may have to appoint another mod as my two horsemen are busy as you mentioned. Traffic is going up and Facebook is growing steadily so yeah I believe this site will become great indeed.

Re: doing something about the one post wonders I wasn't paying attention when I typed your name. Get over it. ;) That's very lame if this is just a summer hangout. And if you own/run the site shouldn't you be on it regularly? Not that we need them but shouldn't the mod's spend more then a few seconds a year on here as well? Otherwise what's the point in being a mod?

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
