Re: Early Linkin Park What, you got hell for liking AC/DC?!?!?!?!?!?!!!!!!!! I mean, personally I can't stand them, but they are proper Hard Rock and damn good taste! I wonder, since you like AC/DC, do you like Airbourne, I've heard that they are virtually identical! 916kaden, it's great to hear that you used to listen to Linkin Park :D ! I agree, though I managed to like up to just a little further than you, they definately have lost their edge. They sound so old now  !

Re: Early Linkin Park Am I that ignorant, Murph1990  ! In truth I had a guitar magazine once and one of their albums was coming out (No Guts, No Glory I think) and so I read a little bit about them. They kind of stuck in my head, along with the way everybody was saying "Great, but you sound like AC/DC". Still, this is exactly what I meant when I said a while back that, slightly facile, I'll admit, thing about it not always being bad if a new band apes another, sometimes you still get great songs in a style no longer being produced. But then perhaps Airbounre are sufficiently different from AC/DC that it is fallacious to use them as an example, I defer to your opinion on that one :) !

Re: Early Linkin Park Airbourne are different enough from AC/DC but you can tell they were influenced by them, I don't mind if a band is showing their influences so long as they put their own spin on it, but blatantly copying another bands style is, in my opinion, not a worthwhile venture, for example if I want to listen to something which sounds exactly like Overkill I'll listen to Overkill, I won't listen to some band that mimics them without adding anything of their own to the style

Re: Early Linkin Park Oh, you just reminded me of the Transformers movies...O, such a sodomy of my childhood... The soundtrack was the least of my gripes with those travesties (although Dark of the Moon wasn't as bad as the others). Well, I honestly don't know much of this band, but everything I've ever heard from them I have hated. Including New Divide.

Yeah, Iceni, to be honest I think most people on this forum would hate them. Interesting what you say about Transformers - were you a fan of the comics or T.V. series or something? I personally like the first movie, used to like the second until I realised that it was knuckleheaded and noisy, and am not even bothering with the third. I think that one reviewer said it all when he said that if one wanted to create Dark Side of the Moon at home, simply tip the contents of one's cutlery draw over one's playboy centrefold while playing the Star-Spangled Banner. P.S. 916kaden, great to hear that you still listen a little :D ! Do you have a favourite song at all?

Re: Early Linkin Park

yes yes we know NTNR you don't like stuff' date=' although in this case I'm inclined to agree, linkin park sucks balls, the transformers movies are horrible, but AC/DC rocks (although that could just be my Aussie national pride setting in)[/quote'] I was never a huge Transformers fan in the 80's and have never bothered to watch the movies. I don't get it. But yes, I do hate most things. Thank you for enforcing that.

Re: Early Linkin Park Hybrid Theory is more inventive and crushing than anything by Iron Gayden. The brilliant fusion of hip/hop, hip lyrics about self discovery and anime, plus the great songwriting make the effeminate queer melodies, Dickinson's overdone vocals, and the major marketing ploy of Eddy to shame. ONE STEP CLOSER TO THE EDGE, I'M ABOUT TO BREAK

Re: Early Linkin Park Whilest I absolutely agree with you about Hybrid Theory (you're not trolling again, right?) Iron Maiden were never trying for the same things a Linkin Park and so one can't really compare them. Oh and btw, since you got hot off Brokeback and Magic Mike why are you calling Maiden queer and other anti-gay slurs :? ?

Re: Early Linkin Park

Personally I hate Linkin Park. I can't stand those damn pansies! I hate all nu-metal. People who listen to nu-metal are not metalheads.
Not all Nu-Metal is bad, Deftones are an amazing band. Sure a lot of Nu-Metal bands are just a bunch of posers, but you have to give some of them a chance. I miss old LP, I Have had the Hybeid Theory album for a while and I used to listen to the entire thing and love every track. The band just went downhill every album, I can't listen to their latest stuff anymore. I saw them live at the Soundwave Festival in Melbourne, I gotta say, they sound amazing live! But their latest studio releases are just meh. Sent from my GT-I9100T using Tapatalk

So, my tastes include Dying Fetus, Decapitated, Kreator, Crowbar, Sabbath, Iron Monkey, Napalm Death, Motorhead, Suffocation, the list goes on... yet this is all cancelled out by the fact that I also like Korn? How does that make sense? O.o

So' date=' my tastes include Dying Fetus, Decapitated, Kreator, Crowbar, Sabbath, Iron Monkey, Napalm Death, Motorhead, Suffocation, the list goes on... yet this is all cancelled out by the fact that I also like Korn? How does that make sense? O.o[/quote'] Plenty of "metalheads" listen to non-metal music, so nu-metal wouldn't void that. I think the point he was trying to make is that with those types of bands not being metal bands, if that's all that you listen to, you can't really label yourself a "metalhead" without listening to metal. I use the label in quotations because I certainly fit this label, of my nearly 2000 albums, very few aren't metal related, but it's not a label I typically care to apply to myself. Labels don't really matter, I would rather just call myself a fan of music who mostly listens to metal. Sent from my HTC PH39100 using Tapatalk 2

Yeah, I know. I just find the assumption that anyone who likes bands that fall under the metalcore/nu metal umbrella are just silly tend-hoppers a little bit annoying. I wouldn't call myself a 'metalhead' anyway; my enjoyment of heavy music stretches beyond metal as I also enjoy hardcore and bands rooted in heavy alternative music like Alice in Chains and Faith No More and harder hip hop, so I'd rather call myself a heavy music fan rather than a 'metalhead'. Still, suggesting someone can't be a metalhead if they listen to nu metal is a little silly, and there are people who are passionate about Korn or Suicide Silence. I know there are many trend-hoppers who have this 'phase' that lasts like 2 months, but not all their fanbase is like that!

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
