                    1998

1. Aeternus - ...And So the Night Became

Desaster - Hellfire´s Dominion

Monster Magnet - Powertrip

Iron Monkey - Our Problem

Dawn - Slaughtersun Crown of the Triarchy

Horna - Kohti Yhdeksän Nousua

Ritual Carnage - The Highest Law

Avskum - Crime & Punishment  .

Judas Iscariot - Distant in Solitary Night

Barathrum - Legions of Perkele

Setherial - Lords of the Nightrealm

Alastor/Decayed - A Sacrifice to Darkness (split)

Zeke - Kicked in the Teeth

Nashville Pussy - Let Them Eat Pussy

1997 was a weak-ish year for me. (as it apparently was for Blivvie as well) Of course there were plenty of good albums to make a list, but no truly great ones imo that would make my overall 90's list. 1998 was much tougher for me. Some all-time favorites on this list, I almost couldn't stop myself from putting down 20+ albums. Wouldn't even know where to begin to try and rank these other than being quite certain Aeternus is my #1.

Bias and nostalgia play a big part in my 1998 so I’m sure to have quite the unique list…

10. Blind Guardian - Nightfall in Middle Earth

Straight out the gate with my favourite power metal album for the longest time. Energetic, catchy, and fun plus Hansi’s vocals just work so well, man has impressive range.

9. Evoken - Embrace the Emptiness

Surprised I have this so low considering my affinity for funeral doom. Heavy, bleak, and atmospheric there’s a reason Evoken are perhaps my favourite FD band.

8. Anata - The Infernal Depths of Hatred

Technical, melodic, and rough around the edges this is a great debut from a band who would go on to reach death metal nirvana later on.

7. Falkenbach - …magnr blandin ok magatiri

Folky, triumphant and heavy I find it as hard to label this album as I do to spell it, Viking/folk/black metal.

6. Centinex - Reborn Through Flames

Dark melodic death metal played extremely well, lots to like here.

5. Gorguts - Obscura

Weird, dissonant, chaotic that seems to be Gorguts’ Modus Operandi and while it takes some getting used to, especially when before this point you’ve only heard considered Dead, I vastly prefer them playing in this style.

4. Astrofaes - Dying Emotions Domain

Hateful and evil black metal, the murky tone works wonders here.

3. Death - The Sound of Perseverance

This is, in my opinion, the best album Death ever released. You can tell Chuck is just having fun, be chaotic changes in time signature and varied styles of death metal across this album really set it apart from everything which came before it. Once again I have to admit I’m biased here, Death is one of my favourite bands, and this is my favourite album they released, it was always making the list.

2. Inquisition - Into the Infernal Region's of the Ancient Cult

This would probably make a list of my top 25 favourite black metal albums, it might even be in the top five, the mix of slower atmospheric sections and blasts off aggression complement each other so perfectly. If these are the hymns that ancient cult sing where do I sign up?

1. Dawn - Slaughtersun

it was a close run race between Dawn and Inquisition but in the end I had to award top spot to this album. Truly masterful black metal.

Hades - Again Shall Be actually came out in 94

Jesus fucking christ I was way off with that one, 4 years! How does that happen? I usually look these albums up on M-A to grab the artwork and check their info like year of release and country of origin when I add them to my library. I shall go locate my 1998 list to delete that errant and erroneous motherfucker post-haste.

Inquisition hasn't ever released anything less than a stellar album imo and I consider them my all-time favorite band. But still Infernal Regions would rank dead last if I had to rank all my Inquisition albums. Incredible to me that so many people seem to like it the best of them all. I do love the last two tracks 9 & 10 but other than those it's the only Inquisition album I almost never choose to play. Not because it's bad, just because I like all their other ones so much more.

I'm not a big funeral doom guy in general but I do really like Evoken and I almost put Embrace the Emptiness on my list.

I've never heard of Astrofaes so I shall go have a listen now.

No I can't remember where YT took me after that one Immortal album it gave me but it wasn't another Immortal album. I might give it a go soon though because I need to go and clean up my office and I need something to distract me from the task at hand.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
