I just realised I didn't put a year on my last top 10 and no one even read it well enough to pick up on it. Obviously no one listens to thrash so they couldn't have guess the year all by themselves :P

Anyway here's 2004, that will give a hint to the previous year!!

1. Exodus – Tempo Of The Damned

2. Orange Goblin – Thieving From The House of God

7. The Hidden Hand – Mother Teacher Destroyer

I will give my horns to these three albums.

Another year and this one only took me 4 days to do. Wow I'm speeding through things now!!

3. Place Of Skulls – With Vision

10. Overkill – Killbox 13

Horns for these two. Another confession-I have never listened to a single Strapping Young Lad or Devin Townsend album. I'm not really looking to break the streak. Call it knee jerk pushback.

SYL is good stuff as is a good deal of Devin's subsequent work. It ain't thrash at all.

I consider Devin a freak of creative nature.... but even I'm not sure about the latest single.

NP: AC/DC - TNT

One of the most feel good albums I have to hand, but not even that can make me feel better right now....

Wow. I remember reading an anniversary blog article about Through Silver and Blood. Part of the article described the intensity and darkness the album and subsequent tour took on the band. Performing it took a toll. Those shows were legendary. Basically like they were brilliant, damaged individuals that had to find a different direction for the band to go after TS&B.

Sometimes it seems that the majority of great artists are tortured and probably lead toxic lives. I saw the  Van Gogh exhibit recently. Made me wonder how many great artists suffer from mental illness.

I imagine Tom Warrior isn't easy to live with.

I'm sorry for his family.

Tom G Warrior on his childhood:

“It was a catastrophe. When I was six years old my parents divorced. That was when the courts assigned me to my mother and she began a slow, spiralling descent into complete insanity. I had nobody. She moved away to that farm village where I knew no one. We had no family or friends. I was a total outcast. Of course, nobody helped me, even though people saw the condition of my home. Everybody must have realised that my mother was not fit to raise a child, and yet no one did anything. There was no youth authority to intervene. It became total hell and it had everything to do with who I am nowadays.”

I bought a SYL album called Alien once a long time ago. Hadn't heard any of it beforehand I'd only read that it was supposedly a "brutal balls to the wall heavy metal assault." But being progressive (weird) I couldn't connect with it at all. It might've been 'brutal' by mainstream standards, but those weren't death metal riffs.

I bought one of his solo albums once too, not really sure which one, could have been Ocean Machine or maybe Terria. But that wasn't any better for me. He certainly seems to have a lot of devotees, even several of my friends dig all his stuff. But needless to say I have no use for any of his stuff myself.

Man's clearly very talented, and he does have an impressive set of pipes on him, can't take that away from him. I think DT is one of those cases where I can see that his music is 'good' and has value, just not to someone like me.

City is SYL's undisputed high point for me. I also thought Alien, the self-titled one, and The New Black were pretty cool at one point, but I haven't put any of them on in years and years. I liked them in college and I guess they stayed there when I left. Devin has an absolute boatload of material that I don't like, too, and I don't think I'm keen enough on his schtick to wade through it all looking for the gems I'm obviously missing.

Guess I need a chart or a book or some responsible administrator to tell me what the best Devin Townsend songs are so I can just have a cool playlist and not have to worry about ever being exposed to bad music.

But yeah, City is a cool album. Worth hearing.

Don't do it! SYL sent Devin to the nut house, he had to stop playing, and it's also why he largely ignores the SYL catalogue on stage these days, the same thing could happen to you. It's not worth the risk. Leave it to those strong enough to handle it. :P

I need to look deeper into the Volhan catalog. I absolutely love El Tigre del Sur but I haven't heard anything else by him. Should I just check out the two full lengths, or are any of the splits worth tracking down?

I haven't dug too deep into the splits since I'm not a major fan of that format, but the Debajo del símbolo del sol split with Blue Hummingbird on the Left was pretty good

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
