The Official Doom Metal Recommendations Thread

Thanks BAN for kicking down a new list on this thread, I'm psyched to check it out, and Horsehunter as well Macabre as well. I liked Narrowhouse I seem to recall, except it's a bit electronic if I recall, but pretty shameless on the self promotion front for sure. I'm afraid that I would be as well if I'd worked hard on it and hoped to bank.

I'm starting to run low on bands to recommend, so I should do some more shopping for more to post about. I don't like to post recommendations for bands unless I actually have their albums, so I do know a lot more bands from various sources, but don't feel qualified to discuss their music if I haven't heard the whole release. Any new requests from anyone else? I haven't made new list entries for some time, and it has been a little slower at work lately, so I could probably add to more of them.

Just now finished up listening through the most recent selections from BAN, and I thought I might indulge myself by posting about it. No need to read this post if you don't care about my opinions, I mostly just wanted to encourage and thank BAN. _Melvins_ Even in my woeful ignorance I knew they were important innovators. Lack of focus led me to this point without hearing them much if at all. I expected some post punk thing like Roxy Music. Glad to be set straight. _Mindrot_ So fucking danceable, got me out of my chair and doing what may have looked like a tybo-crunking hybrid. Painfully soulful music, ending in a sabbath rain. _Moss_ Love me some masonic temple art. It's heavy as heavy can be with gorgeous tones that are balanced on a pin yet it seems pointless to me personally. You used the word raw, but to me it seemed more overcooked. _Saturnus_ the next time I'm getting a hot rock treatment at a spa I'll be sure to request Saturnus. _Serpentine Path_ Wicked primal and yes, so hideous. Please sir, may I have some more? _The Funeral Orchestra_ I like it but lack the attention span with which to listen to it, because I'm a lightweight who grew up on Sesame Street. _Wijlin Jin_ Makes me think that I could get into some funeral. Your description of the band could stand for their mission statement. I especially agree about the keyboards. They go onto the the get in deeper list. _A Young Mans Funeral_ Best thing there is your writing. BAN, you should get paid to review metal. _Celestial Season_ After a greuling day at the mill, what not try a cup of our Salvation tea, even more calming then Bengali Spice. Seriously, I though it was good, just too artsy for me. _Dust_ It seemed like a sonic collage and not really a single musical composition. Too much computer use maybe. You ended on my least favorite cut, but never mind... It was a lovely list, and you've done enough if this is indeed where it ends. I could go through this thread several more times without needing more. Truly BAN, we are not worthy.

I just read through these, and had a good chuckle at a few of them. I'm glad that you found some more stuff that you enjoyed, even if all of it wasn't your flavor. I'm just happy to spread the word, I feel like the music that we discuss here is by and large amazing, and feel like everyone should hear it. I know that not everyone will enjoy the same things, but if I can bridge that gap to connect listeners to bands that give them the same feeling that I get when I play their albums, then I feel that I have succeeded. I'll gladly keep it up until I run out of bands to post about, but then I'll just buy more music and post about that too, so as long as someone is checking them out, I won't stop with the video posts. That is, unless there are some who don't like the format, in which case I'm certainly open to suggestions. I like doing them the way that I do because I find that all too often, recommendations that I am given get buried and missed for whatever reason, but putting a video right there with it helps to keep that from happening.

any Floor listeners here? I heard a song by them at a bar last week and had to ask the bartender if it was Bongripper, it sounded JUST like Hippie Killer/Hate Ashbury ripper tunes, never caught the name of the song though. I read up a little on them yesterday though and what I read seemed nothing like what I feel I heard the other night, guess I'm just wondering if any regular listeners here could recommend an album to check out

Has ANYONE listened to the newest Ufomammut album? This is some serious shit dude' date=' the best I've heard from them tbh, though I havent religiously followed them through the years[/quote'] I fucking love it. It actually feels like it is boring through your very soul as it drives forwards. I can't say I have heard a bad album from them (granted haven't heard everything they have done) but I loved "Idolum" and the 2 "Oro.." releases. I hear they fucking smash live!

Well it took three days but I've finished repairing all the video links in this thread. Guess Black Metal is next...best set a week aside for that one. I will also get back to work in the prog thread at some point this week but repairing broken youtube embeds is taking priority mainly because prog doesn't interest me very much.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
