The majority of the black metal is raping music instruments with absolutely no idea of music, just some trash put together. However, there's one awesome band with its even more freaking awesome album from 2008 - "The Age of Nero". So, tell me of bands whose music is like the music on "The Age of Nero", meaning that the music was made with the thought of a melody, not just to rape the instruments.

There's tons of good melodic black metal, especially from the mid 90s on. Try Sacramentum's "Far Away From The Sun", Naglfar's "Vittra", Rotting Christ's "Non Serviam" and " Triarchy Of The Lost Lovers" (they were moving away from BM on "Triarchy" but it's a fantastic album with tons of dark melodies nonetheless), Abigor's "Nachthymnen", Dawn's "Slaughtersun"... if any of that appeals, I might be able to recommend more. If you're into the more progressive/viking side of things, Enslaved has a bunch of great albums. I love old Satyricon - "The Shadowthrone" is my favorite. Gotta say "Age Of Nero" doesn't do much for me but some of the later ones are pretty cool.

Thanks, I'll check all these out and let you know which ones I liked the most.

I've heard Enslaved but a combination of Black and Viking has never been my thing which is why Thyrfing's "De Odeslosa" is my least favorite album. Folk+Viking - that's more like it. :)

I love all Satyricon's album with "The Age of Nero" being my most favorite. The last two albums are not bad though not as good as "Nero" and I regret to say this but in the last two albums of theirs the most of the songs sound the same to me. No instruments raping which is good, they just sound the same. Meaning, they all sound like they were made to be the same track which was then broken into pieces and those pieces named differently.

Edit: from all those you listed, these are the only tracks I liked:

Seems this black metal section is pretty fucking dead. No one has posted here at all yet this year and it's almost May! I want to see if I can jumpstart this thing. Is there a way to embed Youtube videos here? Oh I see, just paste it here and it automatically embeds. Doesn't get much easier than that.

This place is like a blank slate so I guess I might as well start from scratch. What kind of black metal does anyone like?

I like a lot of different kinds myself, but I guess the bulk of what I listen to is 2nd wave based and fairly melodic. But it still has to be sufficiently harsh, hateful and caustic. Finnish black metal is my preferred poison. Been listening to this Quebecois album quite a bit lately and I think it sounds pretty damn good, best black metal of 2021 for me so far.

Sorry to get off on the wrong foot, but thanks. I realized immediately after I posted that somehow I had deposited that in the wrong place. Don't know how that happened. But I didn't see any way to edit or delete it so I just shrugged and left it figuring you'd move it where it belongs.

Still trying to find my way around here. I see all the sub-genre threads but I'm a little confused I guess about beyond those how things are sorted and categorized around here. Doesn't seem to be the usual default of the most recent posts on top. Before I start messing about and starting new threads and stepping on toes I'll just ask: Do you have anything like a What Are You Listening to Now thread? That has always been our most popular thread. Also wondering about a dedicated new release thread? I see a recent acquisitions thread but not a thread dedicated to bringing to light new releases from the current year.

On topic...I have a black metal recommendation fer yiz, this was my album of the year for 2020

New Djevel track from the upcoming Tanker som rir natten. One thing I've always liked about Djevel is that their songtitles are about as trve as you can get. Just take this track title: The moon shall be my eyes, the burning star my legs, and here I shall wander for all time (Maanen skal være mine øine, den skinnende stierne mine ben, og her skal jeg vandre til evig tid)

Here's another new gem

Celestial Sword / Erzfeynd split album

https://celestialsword.bandcamp.com/album/celestial-sword-erzfeynd-split

CS is doing his usual raw black metal of high quality, but Erzfeynd. Oh man, for a completly new artist this is some top notch stuff. Keep an eye on him! He's got another split with Rraumm out on Ván records, and an EP on the way.

Gate Master / Reign Split

https://thetruereign.bandcamp.com/album/gate-master-reign-split

Splits seem to have become really popular in the past few years, and I like it. A good way to sample bands, and often not boring enough to make me tap out like a full length might. This split is hella fun. One track each from each band, then two collaborations. I'm not familiar with Gate Master previously, but he did real good. Reign is one of my favourite black metal one-man bands to emerge from U.K. in the past 5 years.

Our "What Are You Listening To" thread is here:

We have threads for upcoming/new releases in the General Chat section. I haven't updated this year's thread in a while but feel free to post there if you have anything to share:

Hahaha, raping their instruments with no thought of making music, just some trash thrown together, eh?

I think if you were to listen a little closer you might find there are indeed many musical ideas present in most black metal. But it's not for everyone I suppose.

This sounds melodic as fuck to me. Probably my favorite black metal album of the last decade. A masterpiece of lush soundscapes. Couldn't get enough of this one back in '15. It's not black & roll like Satyricon though so be warned.

Murg fucking rules. I was blasting Stravan first thing this morning much to the dismay of my 90 year old neighbors.

Maybe not everyone's idea of black metal, but I'm really digging the new Mork (Katedralan). Riffs upon riffs upon riffs.

I got the black vinyl delivered to my door today (together with Wayfarers "A romance with violence") so I just had to take a break from work and put on "Frigid and Spellbound". Well, one thing led to another and I've now listened through the whole album. Man this is so fucking good it's ridiculous. Harsh, blasting, but still tons of melodies and groove. I don't know how they pull it off!

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
