And here I thought "living in Florida" was a choice... I guess it's biological after all :D

We did have one winter night where it got down to nearly -10° F and some pipes froze and burst in the top floor of the town library, causing tens of thousands of dollars in damage, so I guess that would be "too cold", but by and large it's pretty nice.

I'll need quite a few patches... I'm a boxer briefs guy.

I've seen "battle Hawaiian shirts" at several shows in recent years. They look understandably stupid, but a t-shirt isn't too much of a stretch.

Heatwave....I have no sympathy for anyone north of Florida complaining about the heat. We deal with 90+ degree temps and 100% humidity 8-9 months a year, so welcome to my world. I've actually thought this year has been kind of mild which is funny because it's 95 here today in the shade. I guess I'm just immune after 45 years living with it and several trips to the sandbox where temps are over 100 in the dead of night and 115-120 in the day. I'll deal with heat before cold any day.

I would go with Butthole Surfers for the ass patch on my battle undies and of course Revolting Cocks and the front.

First of all fuck you right in the Butthole Surfers with your 95° heat and 100% humidity, why don'tcha keep that shit down there where it belongs. You can come get your daily evening thunderstorms too. If you don't like the heat then why don't you move? Us Yankee northerners live up here for a reason, because we can't handle that shit. One day I'll get so old and decrepit that I'll probably end up living with my daughter and the kids down in Florida and then I'll have to start campaigning hard for them to move farther north. Carolina or Virginia weather I could probably get used to and deal with if I had to but not Florida. No one could possibly like that shit, it forces you indoors to stay in the A/C as much as possible.  We had three days here this week working outside in the mid 90's heat and humidity and I thought I was gonna fucking die. Put three bags of ice in the cooler Wed morning and by lunchtime I had to go get more ice. 83° right now at 4:15 pm, and normally even that'd be too warm  for me but after all the extreme heat this week it's a welcome respite.

But anyway yeah Marko has a point, maybe I should try an Anal Cunt patch around back and confuse them.

Which reminds me I owe you a nice seafood dinner next time you head this way to make up for the time I botched up your visit. I throw in some high dollar bourbon too.

....those V4s are exceptional studio monitors....how do you like that WA76 amp?....I've heard they are highly recommended....nice one, man....

Thanks! I'm using the WA76 for the first time now and I think it's great. I'm using the Pre-73 through the WA76 for the direct signal from my bass and it's the first time I've ever been psyched about a DI tone. I still need to dial things around a little, but it's awesome to be able to get this close to a solid sound in the mix without any plugins.

The other new thing here is the TB-12 preamp, which I have my cab mic running through now, and it sounds fantastic too. I liked what I had going before my old equipment crapped out, but I just AB'd the new recorded sound with the old one and this is noticeably better. More complex, more realistic, more natural-sounding. Now I just have to play better.

New CDs

John Petrucci - Suspended Animation

Blaze Bayley - War Within me

Helloween - Helloween

Man, that new Helloween album is just killer.  I'm not as into power metal as I used to be, but I'll spin some Helloween any day.  DragonForce and Cellador are a couple of other power metal bands I still play fairly regularly, along with Steel Attack.

My music might not get any better, but it's certainly easier to get a sound I like with this stuff. Lots of minor differences that add up to make a big improvement. I love singing through that WA-76. The computer isn't playing as nicely with this interface as it did with my old FireWire interface, but thankfully no problems that affect the actual recording quality.

I started off with a Tascam 4 track cassette machine when I was a teenager, so anything computer-based is pretty luxurious. What's your Fostex, one of the standalone digital recorders?

father alabaster good to hear about your new gear.thanks for asking, the fostex is standalone little im assuming  digital unit. it records straight to cds. bit old school now. who uses cds now😁 your old 4 track is old school and probably worse than my fostex but it got you started which is👍

the new equipment you got sounds cool including the wa 76 for your vocals. does it help get the sound profile your looking for. sound profile sounds like it should be recording term. 🤣

its good your able to get closer to that sound you want with rest of equipment. ive listened to stuff from the 40s and it sucks not because its bad music but because the recording equipment did not capture the sound that the band wanted to make

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
