It looks pretty simple too, which is nice - no annoying Floyd Rose or unnecessary features.  I learned the hard way that getting a guitar with unneeded, flashy details is not the best option.  While I don't know much (anything really) about guitar tech, I take your word for it that the specs are great.

If its for metal, then I would tend to prefer the black finish (though natural wood is nice too!).

Agreed, I always prefer simple - to the point where I've even taken all the electronics out of my main players and wired the pickups straight to the jack. I learned to play on a fixed bridge, and I have habitual approaches to certain techniques (palm muting and tremolo picking for instance) that really don't translate well to a Floyd Rose. A good Floyd set up well on a good guitar can be really fun, but I'm much more at home writing and performing on a Tune-O-Matic.

These pickups are a little bit "fancy" for my taste but the range of sounds actually seems useful, and I have zero noise coming through my amp for the first time in years. Everything so far seems like an upgrade.

She is beautiful father alabaster, I can't wait to get my guitar back from the guitar shop, would you believe it, I put it in for a service, as it needed a lot of work, a week before UK lockdown, I could've cried like a baby when I learned that it'd be months until I got it back, mind you it was unusable anyway.  The guy at the shop was confident they could get it "good as new" though...

Ouch, that sucks! I would go nuts if I couldn't play. I've had my main guitar stuck elsewhere for a while before and it's a shitty feeling, I missed it constantly. Any idea when you'll be able to get your hands on it?

It'll be another month I think, its not all bad I still have my dean baby ml, but it is an awful guitar, really weak sounding, I've managed to compose an entire album with it, but I used it's papery thin sound to the advantage of the project (old skool bm sort of sound).  But yeah I'm really looking forward to having a proper guitar again, it actually isn't even that great a guitar to be fair, a warlock bronze series, but with a hi gain kent Armstrong pick up upgrade... and the body just sounds girthier you know?

Hey, if it works, it works. A lot of lower mid-level instruments can sound great and be everything you need with the right setup. Good luck with it.

Went into the city today, bought (finally) Rotting Christ - 'Thy Mighty Contract' on a whim, then left it in the kebab shop near my house. I came back a few hours later to find it exactly where I'd left it. The good people of my neighbourhood opting against a free Rotting Christ CD. Crazy, hey.

I have been buying some patches... for my first ever proper battle vest/jacket. I did attempt one in about 1991, but as I recall it sucked. This one, however... will probably also suck ? Figured it would be a fun little nerdy project nonetheless, and I do enjoy those. So far I have/have ordered Slayer (x3), Sepultura, Megadeth, Death, Autopsy, Obituary, Carcass, Morbid Angel, Deicide, Bolt Thrower, Vader, Blood Incantation, Necrot, Krypts, Cruciamentum, Baphomet, Soulskinner, Eternal Darkness, Worm and 1914 patches ...plus Evoken, Krypts (x2), Kreator (x2) and Metallica (x2) pin badges. Hopefully have enough 'stuff' to do the whole thing now, but we shall see ?

So, my wife (for some mysterious reason) wants to throw out my old metal shirts that happen to have a lot of (really big) holes in them. I naturally disagreed with this. The compromise is that she has agreed to periodically buy me replacement shirts, and when she places the order I have to throw away the old one. That part was hard.

I decided to start with the first metal shirt I ever bought: Emperor - In The Nightside Eclipse. I purchased the original shirt back in 1998 or so. The new one arrived today and it's beautiful. Classic artwork from a classic album, large and unfaded in all its intricate glory. I notice that the guys in the lower left corner (trolls? soldiers? orcs?) are tinted a little different than the original and really stand out. I am thoroughly pleased with this purchase.

If the old artwork is still intact and they have that much sentimental value, could you cut out the art and sew or mount it to something so you could hang it up? I'm still hoping to do that with a couple of mine that are past wearing.

I have this tee also with the "tinted" warriors.  Very happy with it.

I considered this, but, in truth, the holes are so large and plentiful, and the artwork so faded, that it just isn't practical.

Seems like a good trade as long as they fit ok.you could keep a few for that distressed look. Re new t shirts  I left my wife to buy me a wintersun t shirt but its so tight so I can't wear it.  My wife's convinced it's ok but I wear things too baggy. Some people ? so I buy my own t shirts now. At least you did not have that problem. I love that album too not so keen on all the chapel burnings but the music is spot on. The album picture is great too

My latest purchase was the Jones town dyatlov t shirt bundle. I got a really interesting t shirt with one interesting pattern on it probably from one of those eastern religions  with thick good quality print on a solid t shirt. Will last a few years plus it fits great because I ordered it and not the wife? also I got the cd which will be useful in the car especially as a tactic to duck driving when I'm tired. It's 100% the drivers choice to pick the music  in my household?

A few of the latest arrivals:

Mercyful Fate - 'Don't Break the Oath'

Got the 2020 Metal Blade vinyl replica release. It's a beautiful package.

Satanic Warmaster - 'Opferblut'

Been meaning to pick this up for ages, so finally pulled the trigger. Atmospheric, unpretentious, yet emotional and moving.

Emyn Muil - 'Elenion Ancalima'

A flat out rip-off of Summoning, but enjoyable nonetheless. It's Summoning basically.

Panopticon - 'Roads to the North'

Everyone has been raving about this band, so I bought this without having heard them. What a cool album. Kind of hipster black metal mixed with bluegrass Kentucky music. Amazing one man band musicianship. I feel very inferior listening to this.

Gehenna - 'First Spell'

This is the 2014 re-release with no fewer than 10 bonus tracks in the form of demos etc. I just need this for the collection more than any great urge to listen to Gehenna's keyboard heavy black metal.

I've pre ordered the new pallbearer album. I liked the preview track as was very doomy and heavy but also very catchy. Ive been  a fan for a few years so am looking forward to this and seeing them live when they play the UK next year that is assuming I have any money. That's the problem with shortly having 3 kids in nursery. ?

Finally got my hands on:

King Diamond - 'Abigail' (2020 Metal Hammer re-release)

Just a lazy 33 years after initial release. Better late than never.

Something must have been rotten in the state of Castle Requiem for this to have even occurred.

Thankfully you've already got the rest of King Diamond's catalogue to make up for this horrid blunder, right?

Let's just say that I'm building the collection from 'Abigail' up...

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
