New Purchases/Acquisitions

There are a few around, but prices vary wildly as does the quality of used vinyl. I only buy used at a few trusted shops. I have 6 dedicated shops within an hour of me, 2 within 15 minutes. Only one of those will I actually buy used from and it's rarely cheaper. Some stuff has just never been reissued so it's the only choice. Harder thing these days is to actually find a cd in a shop.

I used to frequent markets and the like for vinyl. Years ago I picked up things like a singed King Crimson for $5, a WASP Last Command picture disc for $8, Jump In The Fire and Creeping Death singles for $2 and a heap of other stuff. But in this country now those sort of markets seem to have disappeared. These days the markets we see seem to be run by yuppies who think a second hand pair of pants with the arse torn out are worth $100 because they are pre-loved. The same markets sell second hand books with the spines all creased and bent for $15, CD's for $15, VHS tapes for $10 and LP's for $20, no consideration for the state they are in or the damage they have.

I kinda alternate these days. If I find a vinyl I want for a decent price, I'll pick it up. I just find the number of albums I want I'm willing to pay that much for is dwindling. Gotta be something I really want. I rarely buy any new releases on vinyl. I just get burned too often (dull album, shipping issues, poor condition, long delays). I go digital on new stuff. I will pick up the cd if the price is relatively close to the download.

That SWR is one I might try to get. Love that album. Obituary always puts on a good show too.

navybsn not seen obituary live and im sure your right. ive seen some amazing live videos of theres. the bloodstock recording i like alot. great vocals and all the instruments imo. slowly we rot i will get but probably next pay day. even on cd.

very wise re vinyl. get it if you know album is amazing.tbh i try to do that with all music i buy. well i try to.

if i moved to bigger house with more space i might consider getting vinyl again. pigs may fly before that happens 😂

  • 3 weeks later...

Well the other day I ordered a green vinyl copy of "Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk" off of discogs and just now I ordered the following from Hells Headbangers:

Graveland "Hour of Ragnarok" (Gold and black marble vinyl)
Vietah "Smalisty zah" (clear vinyl)
Witchtrap "Evil Strikes Again" (orange and green swirl vinyl)
Varathron "Walpurgisnacht" (blue and white splatter vinyl)
Obtest "Dyvlika Juodvarniu" 7" (picture disc)

I decided that I can spend the money because it's what I would have spent at the Vinyl expo tomorrow if I was off of work, but chances are the expo isn't going to have a lot of metal so I was able to justify it. And after the day I had at work today, I deserve to buy some new albums. Good thing is I get half of my day's wages every time I work, so I'm never truly broke.

Probably going to wait until next paycheck to buy any more albums. These should keep me busy for a while even if they'll take like a week to get here.

Cradle of Filth - "Existence is Futile"

Absolutely loving this new album.  It's been out for 3 days now, and I've listened to it numerous times all the way through.  Their best album in 17 years - since the mighty "Nymphetamine"

I just picked up Cruelty and the beast re-mistressed. I was also pleasantly surprised it was clear red vinyl. It didn't have a hype sticker so i assumed it was black.

EIF is a pretty fun album. I can't not see a big devil ant on the cover.

Oh man that's awesome!  I was wondering how the "Re-mistressed" version would sound.  I grabbed it on Apple Music a few days ago, right after getting "Existence is Futile", and I'm also pleasantly surprised at the sound quality.  "Cruelty and the Beast" is one of the greatest albums ever recorded, and now it sounds even better!  I own all of Cradle of Filth's albums, and I always struggle to figure out how I'd rank their discography, because I literally enjoy all of their albums.  The mighty "Nymphetamine" will always be in the #1 spot for me, but after that, I could rank them in any order depending on the day.  Do you have a favorite Cradle album?

I'm sort of in the same boat as you on not being able to rank them. Nymphetamine was the album that lured me into the band as well. I guess I would say Cruelty and Dusk and her embrace have my favorite overall soundscape from front to back. Midian has some of my favorite songs as well. impossible to say! haha

Yeah man it's difficult!  The two albums I see that usually get the most flack from a lot of fans are "Thornography" and "The Manticore and Other Horrors", but I absolutely love both of those albums.  What do you think of "Existence is Futile" so far?  I'd probably already rank it in the top 3 or 4 in their entire catalog - it's that good!

So far I've really liked it on the few times I've heard it. But I'll have to sit down and listen more intently and maybe read the lyrics in accompaniment.

Also I really, really loved darkly darkly venus adversa. I dont know what the overall reception was to that album but for me it was a home run.

Same here!  I absolutely loved "Darkly, Darkly, Venus Aversa"!  I think the overall reception by critics and fans was a bit mixed, but I feel the same as you: I thought it was a home run.  I haven't listened to anything else besides Cradle of Filth for more than a week now, and I'm loving every second of it.  I know we've already acknowledged how difficult it would be to rank their discography, but I'm up for trying it!  I'll put my list together and see what you think!

Commendable!

Did you ever watch the movie Cradle of Fear? I remember buying it from the UK on ebay when I was in highschool because you couldn't download things like you could now back then. It was a fun watch for a CoF fan forsure.

Oh man I haven't seen it!  Thanks for the heads-up.  I can't wait to watch it now.  I've been checking out some recent interviews with Dani Filth lately to hear him talk about the new album.  He's penned some of the greatest lyrics in the history of metal.  I'm currently listening through "The Manticore and Other Horrors".  I can't get enough of that album lately!

Today I picked up Burzum "Det Som Engang Var" completing my Burzum collection (the first four metal albums are really the only necessary ones)...

And said "What the hell? You're only as old as you feel" and grabbed up a copy of Dimmu Borgir "Spiritual Black Dimensions" because I need at least my second favorite Dimmu Borgir album for my collection since the original "Stormblast" is never going to get a vinyl pressing due to copyright infringement from some video game that barely anyone has ever played.

Today (11/8/21) I traded in two Leftover Crack and a Crass album (Penis Envy) for Burzum's "From the Depths of Darkness" at my local record store. I was trying to sell some underground punk and hardcore vinyl that I acquired ages ago in order to make space on my record shelf, but neither store was interested in taking the stuff so I guess that means I have to open a discogs account and put the stuff on there & see if I can sell it that way. It's mostly local punk/hardcore bands and stuff from Profane Existence distro, so a lot of it doesn't even have barcodes. I figure I can put each LP up for $8-12 and make a little bit of money to spend on Hells Headbangers or RevHQ if people are actually interested in buying any of this stuff.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
