Was in a store today and by happenstance I discovered:

Darkthrone - 'The Wind of 666 Black Hearts' for a very decent price.

It was released by Peaceville in 2017 and I had no idea about it. I never knew it existed.

It contains two rehearsals, one for 'A Blaze in the Northern Sky' and one for 'Under a Funeral Moon', and the sound on both is really good, probably better than the actual albums which really surprised me. Great little booklet with an essay from Fenriz about the scene and the band at the time. A very nice package from Peaceville. Highly recommended for Darkthrone enthusiasts.

Nabbed a CD copy of Slowly We Rot just now.  It is a remaster so I am probably going to have a fucking fit when I play it and some sound guy has made it sound like a Disney soundtrack but I have been waiting around for ages for a physical copy and beggars can’t be choosers I am afraid.

I hear a track from that is on the 'Frozen II' soundtrack.

These remixes work wonders....

Arriving from Eastern Europe today, by pure happenstance:

Arkona - 'Goi Rode Goi' (2009)

From Russia. For years I've neglected this band, to my detriment. A huge 80 minute epic of riffs, folk instruments, chants and amazing female vocals that are some of the best clean and growls you'll hear. I'm a true convert. Arkona are amazing.

Graveland - 'Following the Voice of Blood' (remastered slipcase) (1997/2017)

From Poland. Unlike Arkona, I've been a fan of Graveland since about the year 2000, yet I never had this nor 'Carpathian Wolves' in my CD collection, which is a travesty. While I still don't have 'CW', I snatched up this fantastic re-release that includes new artwork and booklet and a remastered sound. Tastefully, the original edition's booklet has been included in the package, which I think is a very nice touch. One of my all time favourite bands.

Wolfkrieg - 'Jedem Das Steine' (2012)

From Russia. It's a pure coincidence that I have two Russian and one Polish album in this bundle of musical joy. These guys play mid-paced black metal with some politics going on in the background, along with German WWII soundbites, although the lyrics are in Russian so I have no idea what's going on within each track. A decent listen when you're in the mood for some edgy political black metal that's more right wing than Genghis Khan... in Russian...

They're not my usual jam, but I think this is a great album. The clean vocals are spectacular, especially those big layered harmony sections.

Aren’t they great. I’m really surprised with this album. I also don’t mean to disparage the Russian metal scene, but this is astonishingly excellent for something coming out of Moscow that isn’t funeral doom or nsbm.

I’m really excited by it. And her...

In the city of glass this afternoon and purchased on good terms:

Kreator - 'Pleasure to Kill' (1986/2017) remastered digibook. I'd fingered this classic for some time and finally pulled the trigger and bought it today. A great edition with photos, lyrics, essay and all sorts of paraphernalia. A classic that was sorely missing from my collection.

KISS - 'Crazy Nights' (1987/1998) remastered jewel case. Finally bought this 80s rock classic. It's remastered with an essay, lyrics and fabulous 80s band photos.

KISS - 'Revenge' (1992). It's good to have this back in the collection after first picking it up in a cassette swap session as a 13 year old. Brilliant album that wraps up ten great years from 1982's 'Creatures of the Night' to this dirty gem.

Twilight Force - 'Dawn of the Dragonstar' (2019) digibook. I bought this on a good old fashioned whim in the store, much like the olden days, but what really put me over the edge was the knowledge that the lead vocals were by Alessandro Conti who I just love as a singer after his performance on Turilli Rhapsody's - 'Prometheus' album in 2015. Basically this rips off traditional Rhapsody in every way, including a map in the booklet, songs about dragons, narration and even a few chapters of a fantasy story that, incredibly, includes some of the band members as actual characters. You couldn't make this power metal shit up, I'm telling you. Great fun.

Hate Forest - 'Nietzscheism' (2005) digipak. Freshly arrived in the mailbox. Re-release by Osmose. Beautiful digipak that includes in the booklet the covers and track listings of each EP and 7 inch that form the content of the compilation. This is true and unadulterated Hate Forest.

Does your copy too begin with some organ tune that wasn't there on the original album?

It's not that I dislike this organ tune, but I'd rather had had it left off, because I'd have liked the album it to be like in '86. (Maybe there's a story behind it like "we would have done that if we had had the money for it at that point in time", like Jabba the Hutt appearing in the re-release of Star Wars; A New hope?) Oh well, I can always play my old vinyl copy.

Apart from that, it is a fine package indeed. Funny to read that Faces of Death, which was a popular cult movie at the time, was a big inspiration for the album!

Yeah, there’s a keyboard-based intro called ‘Intro (Choir of the Damned)’.

I just assumed that it was on the original edition too because the liner notes in the re-release explain its composition at the time and what they were going for.

Mille’s explanations of each track are really interesting. I’ve never been a Kreator fan previously, despite general respect for their legacy, but this package is fascinating and well put together.

There *is* a an intro called Choir of the Damned on the original record, but it is about a minute shorter than on the new release. (My description of the additional minute as 'organ' was incorrect and misleading; both the old and new pieces seem a mix of both guitar and keyboard).

Somebody uploaded a vinyl rip to Youtube; this is the original intro:

I've neglected my Mercyful Fate & King Diamond collection for far too long (only possessing the albums up to 1988) so I decided to catch up; not every album was for sale on my online shop of choice, but I got:

Mercyful Fate:

  • In the Shadows
  • Time
  • 9

King Diamond:

  • The Spider's Lullabye
  • Voodoo
  • Abigail II: The Revenge
  • The Puppet Master

Great albums! I could be sorry for having missed out on them for so long, but it's rather the opposite: I'm glad to learn to know a whole bunch of unknown albums!

Requiem it's pretty decent when you find fall upon an album that you missed the release date for. Glad you enjoyed dark throne I completely missed leaden light by illimitable dolor but got it the other day.  Seems a good album. Probably not groundbreaking for atmospheric death/doom but I like it and it beats being weather beaten by storm Ciara although exodus had a worse time in the same storm in Finland. ?

I've bought a fair bit of stuff lately, and let's be honest, I can't remember it all precisely and you can't be bothered reading about it.

But what I do want to post is that I've purchased a second copy of Bathory's - 'Blood Fire Death'.

The reason being, I originally bought a cheap copy off ebay thinking I had an official version at a great price, but what I ended up with was a very poor, colour photocopied version by a company called Kraze. The inlay had no lyrics and it was just a shoddy presentation. If anyone is going to buy this album, check that it's not the Kraze version.

So I went ahead and bought the 2003 Black Mark release, which at least has the lyrics and a crisply clear front and back cover.

It also leads me to believe that the first 5 Bathory albums are sorely in need of a proper re-release in deluxe editions. It seems a pity that this hasn't happened. And even more of a pity if it's happened and I've missed it somehow...

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
