Balor wins.

Recently purchased random things. The one that arrived today was a Mayhem/Darkthrone unofficial split with the ‘Thulcandra’ demo and ‘Deathcrush’ original version.

I think that’s it’s for now as far as Mayhem stuff goes. Photo and inventory soon.

You win the award for "Most exotic New Purchases material of 2019". Half of it is in Chinese(?), half in Spanish(?), and it's a split tape rarer than a fucking dodo egg.

Its certainly the most exotic purchase I have made so far.  It really surprised me that I was able to order it off of Discogs, though, given that the cdr version is banned.

Discogs bans quite a lot of things these days. Pity that it's heading that way...

Nice bass, Alabaster.

In a store, old fashioned like, I just bought Sabaton - 'The Last Stand', which I'm very impressed with as a catchy warfare jaunt.

More importantly, I just placed a juicy order on ebay. Mgla, Forgotten Tomb, Fleshgod Apocalypse and early Behemoth. When this comes through it's going to be all shit lost at Castle Requiem.

Recent purchase?  An 8 hour ferry trip back from Northern Ireland next week because airlines want virtually a week’s rent for a 30 min flight.  Also got my 9 hour Game of Thrones coach tour in Northern Ireland where I intend to annoy all other passengers by professing to have never seen the programme  and that I am just there “for the sites of Northern Ireland”!

Too bad flights are so expensive, although the ferry sort of sounds fun. Can you drink on it? Good old Ryan Air used to come through with the goods though when it came to cheap flights.

The countess and I went on the Sound of Music tour in Salzburg, Austria, one time, and I had never seen the film. Every time the tour stopped at an important location I'd stand up and shout "This tour is shit!". Well, I should have at least.

I've since seen the film about 20 times as it's a "family favourite" at Chateau Requiem. It's one wacky movie, that's for sure. Great on acid, I bet. Oh man, I want to try that.

I can drink on it but need to go and get my car from the airport when we get off the ferry!  So we fly to Dublin with Ryanair for about the cost of 2 pieces of straw and some pebbles but coming back out of Belfast, Easyjet wanted like £250 because we have luggage.  Screw that.

So ... time flies. Moving house bumped me offline for a while. (Remote area, nuff said.) "Special arrangements" had to be made. However that may be, just a few hours ago, I bought no less than ten Grateful Dead CDs, from some dude on the net, with stuff for sale. Not exactly heavy metal, nor, to be honest, a band that I really know anything about, except they've been around like forever and all the hippies like them.  It was a good price though. How bad can it be? I expect some proggy shit, like if Fleetwod Mac ate the Allmann Brothers, sprinkled with some Curved Air, or something along those lines. I guess we shall see. Or hear, rather.

Just bought on ebay:

Gorgoroth - 'Instinctus Bestialis' (Hail Infernus, I'm sorry I doubted you).

Mayhem - 'Wolf's Lair Abyss' re-release. (Hail @Benjaminc81 for putting me on to it. This is excellent because I only have one copy of 'Wolf's Lair' in my collection, so I'm glad to have another version. Of course, this will mean laying out all my Mayhem stuff yet again to take a photo haha. Dammit. See the Mayhem thread in the Black Metal forum for reference).

Turilli/Leone Rhapsody - 'Zero Gravity'. (The best version of Rhapsody by far, Turilli's last album 'Prometheus' was so stunning, and the new tracks from this that I've heard are even better. The final word in modern power metal).

Sabaton - 'The Great War - History Edition'. (Got to love this, the 'history edition'. I love Sabaton, I love history. What could possibly go wrong?).

12 months subscription to Zero Tolerance magazine - keeping the metal press alive!

Nice move. I really used to support the pint media, namely Terrorizer, until they had that massive crash and they abandoned me and my 8+ years of loyal patronage, the fuckers. I shall forever curse their name, despite having a shed full of about 300 issues. I'll take them all out in summer and take a photo of them on the grass. It'll look amazing.

Anyway, after Terrorizer told me to fuck off despite throwing money at them, I then bought a subscription to Zero Tolerance and it was really good, although I found the small size of the magazine hard to read and eventually the bands they were covering just didn't appeal to me.

Good to hear the magazine is still going! (ZT, not the loser rag 'Terrorizer).

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
