By best do you mean value for money, range or something else?

From my experience, iTunes has always been about as expensive as buying new CDs from stores but it's been a couple of years since I tried and that could be area and exchange rate related.

You can get plenty of good stuff for relatively cheap if you dig around Bandcamp. I have not bought anything from the sight yet (I still need to set up a credit card that works with it) but already have a list of stuff that I plan on getting, some of which I've came across directly or indirectly through this very forum.

I buy nearly all my music from ebay. You can usually get a factory wrapped brand spanking new CD for between $6-20 US depending on what it is.

It's great.

Here's what I've just bought on ebay and the prices. All CDs are brand new. Prices in US dollars. Postage is free:

Saor - 'Guardians' $18

Eldamar - 'The Force of the Ancient Lands' $21

Dio - 'Last in Line' $6

Ozzy - 'Tribute' $6

Ex Deo - 'Immortal Wars' $13

Rotting Christ - 'Rituals' $13

I use Discogs a lot!

Sometimes I get disappointed, though.

Like the one time a dude listed a UK version of Great White's "Recovery Live" as the US version... I bought it and when I got it I was devastated ahah

Got a partial refund, though.

Life's full of tragedies isn't it...

I recently purchased tickets to Primordial next month and Paradise Lost in December. Once the credit card ticks over next month I'll buy a ticket to Sebastian Bach who I think is here in October.

sadly not the leather jacket I saw because I couldn't afford it.

You should have told us you were coming to Melbourne and we could have partied like it's 1993.

Also, you came all the way to Melbourne and bought Port Adelaide stuff! Irony!

Next time I'll be down longer. Literally got in late Friday night, spent all day watching Port humiliate Collingwood on Saturday (BTW not impressed with the MCG atmosphere but the Dim Sims are pretty good). Sunday was the markets then long trip home.

Oi, don't knock our major sporting landmark! The MCG is more precious to we Victorians than our own mothers.

I was actually at the other ground, Etihad Stadium, watching a really boring match between St Kilda and Gold Coast, of all teams. Free tickets, hence our attendance. Good times.

You missed the thriller at Kardenia Park for that?

I know I'm biased but the Adelaide Oval is a far nicer place to watch live sport from my experiences. The ground itself looks fantastic. The hill, the old scoreboard, those fig trees in the back ground. What a sight. As for the atmosphere? It's electric. There is nothing like being at the Adelaide Oval when it's going off. Not just for footy either. Being there when Mitch Johnson was getting into the poms like I get into a case of beer was something else.

As for the footy I have never, in my life, for anything I've attended experienced a crowd like our elimination final against Richmond. 55,000 people going off and the noise just rolling back on top of itself. I can't put into words what it was like. I get chills every time I think about it.

I've only seen the Adelaide Oval on TV, but it's basically my perfect stadium. I'm a huge test cricket fan and love traditional grounds like that a hell of a lot more than massive concrete stadia.

For football, massive concrete stadia. For cricket, quaint country grounds like Adelaide. ;)

50k at the Adelaide Oval sounds far louder then 50k at the MCG in my experience. It isn't intimidating as a supporter travelling to the 'G. I haven't felt in my trips there as though I were entering a colosseum. That may be due to Port generally playing very well at the MCG and silencing the crowd early but I don't feel that is the case. At the Adelaide Oval there's still a buzz around the ground even when we aren't playing well. The fans trying to lift our team I guess. Haven't got that at the 'G. In fact the last two times (both for Port v Collingwood) I've been there five or six thousand Port fans have been louder then the forty or fifty thousand Collingwood people.

Speaking with a couple of friends who've travelled to Adelaide for games it can be overwhelming. Not that we Port fans are hostile more so that we're so vocal in supporting out team. I remember hearing Cam Mooney a couple of times talk about how being on the ground putting himself in player's shoes it would feel like being a gladiator in the colosseum.

Also for the record the Adelaide Oval (or as we Port fans affectionately refer to it the Portress) holds more people then Etihad. Highest capacity after the MCG now that ANZ isn't used.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
