hey Iceni have you used your code to order your free t-shirt yet? wait you did win the last "monthly most metal" didn't you? either way you only have a limited time before the code expires
I think I won last month, but I never got the e-mail that I should have. I've been trying to work it out with Tait, and think we've finally got it straightened out.

I'm trying to win this month but I might not depending on how much time I end up having. I'd like to get a HammerFall shirt, the Resurrection one is good. Also picked up two shirts, one for Skyfire and another one for Redemption. I really hope the Redemption shirt arrives soon, it's taking a while and it's starting to annoy me.

Re: New Purchases/Acquisitions

Actually used ebay for the first time in my life and bought 6 patches that are going on to my denim vest. They were Mgla, Craft, Sarcofago, Horna and Deströyer 666 with just the logo. And the werewolf emblem from Satanic Warmaster.
I've had good experience with eBay overall. I buy a lot of stuff from there and tend to get good deals, and have found many rare items there. However, it's also a whorehouse for the really sought after stuff, and many hoarders overcharge like crazy for some items. Sent from my HTC PH39100 using Tapatalk 2

Awesome! Ive dodged e bay for the longest! Is it easy to use? Do you have to bid just to get what you want? How does it work?

They have auctions, but they also have regular purchase options. It's pretty easy to use, and fairly self explanatory once you get started. They have tons of sellers, both stores and individuals, so they have a good selection of stuff. Sent from my HTC PH39100 using Tapatalk 2

Do a bit of research before buying, you can sometimes get stuff cheaper from regular shops. I needed a part for my car, ebay price £25.00 plus postage, Mercedes Benz local dealer £19.56. Only ever been ripped off once but it was only £11 so no big drama. I tend to only buy from people who have a high feedback percentage also pay with PayPal for a little more security.

same, haven't been ripped off but I pay using paypal and only use sellers with very high positive feedback over a long period of time, fortunately the metal forum shop works out to be a little cheaper on average then eBay, or maybe it's just that we tend to pay more for everything in Australia so I don't know if I'm being ripped off...

I got ripped off about 70 euros at one point for a rosary I bought as a gift for a relative of mine who's a nun. The others were about 30 euros but since my bus was leaving soon I had to just grit my teeth and buy it anyhow. It also just so happens that this occurred of all places at the Vatican, at their gift shop (run by nuns), which is hardly good press...

Re: New Purchases/Acquisitions I only picked up a Bolt Thrower tour shirt at the gig, as Benediction sold out completely and all the Autopsy shirts I liked were sold out of my size. On a trip out yesterday I picked up Opeth "Still Life" and Amorphis "The Karelian Isthmus". Opeth are a favourite of mine already - I heard "Blackwater Park", fell in love with it, did the same with "Deliverance" (not so much "Damnation") and "Ghost Reveries" but had never bothered with anything prior to "Blackwater.." so took the cheap ticket price as an opportunity too good to miss. "Still Life" is nothing short of fucking awesome it's a massive, expansive and dynamic sounding album. The use of the brushes and fretless bass on "Face Of Melinda" is perfect - a undeniable hook. I had never really seen the appeal of Amorphis if I am honest, their sound is dull and quite repetitive but "The Karelian Isthmus" has been recommended so many times I just took a punt. It's not as bad as I feared - I maintain I am right on the repetition though but there are a couple of decent tracks on there that will make want to revisit it at a later point. I've just downloaded some Wilds Reprisal "Defiance Enthroned" - Cascadian Black Metal which is as raw and abrasive as you like but has some clever folky moments thrown in to occupy your ear a little closer than you might first expect. There is also a booklet accompanying it espousing Deep Ecology which is a little disturbing in it's message as portrayed on the record but I won't let that detract from the music.

I popped 'round Blood Covenant's Last.fm page and as it turns out the band is offering free downloads, so I'm busy picking up some stuff from them. I have a little more PayPal money so I might pick up Tales From The Sleepless Empire by Unexpect as well, since for some odd reason they don't seem to have them on Amazon Mp3.

Cadaver - ...In Pains Carcass - Necroticism - Descanting The Insalubrious Darkthrone - Soulside Journey
I would love to be experiencing those albums for the first time again. I heard Carcass' set at MDF was fucking sick this year too, so maybe the new album will actually be good. Sent from my HTC PH39100 using Tapatalk 2

I'm a bit surprised The Karelian Isthmus didn't dig its hooks into you, it's a great doomy Finndeath album. I love all of Opeth's stuff, but Still Life never stood out to me in quite the same way as My Arms, Your Hearse or Blackwater Park. Sent from my HTC PH39100 using Tapatalk 2

Yeah something hasn't clicked with it for me I'm afraid - I am going to explore a couple more of Amorphis` records though just out of curiosity (any pointers?). I hear "Tales From A Thousand Lakes" lauded alot.

I like all of their albums, but Elegy is my favorite. It's a great deal more progressive than their early material, and the first album to have a large clean vocal presence. The songwriting is incredible though, there's really nothing else like it out there.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
