It takes way more snow than that here before they close anything. Really' date=' a quarter inch and they close? That hardly effects driving conditions.[/quote'] Please, the Armani will be soiled if it goes outside in such conditions...

  • 4 weeks later...
Watching lots of Burn Notice with my family. They hate it when I make remarks about the firearms but otherwise it's fun for all of us.
Random fact: I own two firearms, I have fired lots of guns, from a Barrett M82 to a Beretta CX4. I am one hell of an accurate shot, and my favorite firearm (thus far) is an M16 (yes fully aware this gun is an ugly duckling, I think it's a load of fun!). I'd like to think I'm moderately well-versed for the fairer sex. That said I'm pretty left when it comes to gun control, and I'm in support of stricter laws to keep guns out of the hands of the mentally ill, etc. On Topic: Eating: half a paleo meatball Drinking: cup of chai tea Listening: Epica Doing: working on doing some complex terrain texturing, it's doing my head in a bit Thinking: I am so excited for my trip to D.C. in two weeks. I will get to see one sister after over 20 years apart, and another sister after 13 years apart. It's been a long time coming. Sisters (and Brothers) are so special and I feel really lucky and grateful I get this opportunity.

If you'd told those guys in the Metal Archives that you can handle a .50 BMG that might have shut them up! :D "A 3-inch group at 90 yards says you can keep your smart remarks about In Vain to yourself, asshat..." That's great! I've been a gun nerd of sorts ever since I was five or six, and I always love looking up new developments in the industry. My shooting experience is sparse and terrible though - I went to the range once when I was in South Africa when I was seven (under heavy supervision) and I've been a handful of times here in NM. I only ever shot two .22 pistols (the second, whatever it was, failed to fire so frequently I ended up ejecting half of the bugger-chuffing bullets when I tried to shoot the thing) some 9mm pistol and a .22LR bolt action. Didn't do very well with them either, my best was something like a 3-inch group at 20 yards. With the bloody rifle. :( What variant of M16? Was it an AR-10, a later-model M16 or one of the various guns based on that platform? ...also, have you ever fired a Walther P99? I only ever held a BB replica but the grip felt just sublime.

M16A4. Which I hear might soon be improved with ambidextrous features which would be cool as I am left handed. And that has always been a bit of a pisser with guns designed for righties. I've gotten a few burns just from getting whacked by hot casings flying at my head. Righties just won't understand...

I've gotten a few burns just from getting whacked by hot casings flying at my head. Righties just won't understand... I actually haven't. In terms of pistols I've shot, it's a medium-long list, and I really like S&W grips, one of my guns is a S&W .22 cal (manufactured by walther). I've never fired a desert eagle. I'd like to not whack myself in the forehead or break my wrist. yep.
I know there are a number of AR-15 type rifles now that offer ambidextrous controls; have you had the opportunity to try any of them? The only one that comes to mind is the Beretta ARX-180, which I realize is mil-spec and probably costs about $672 bajillion, but I've seen others. I could look in one of my gun magazines... Is that a P22 variant then? I know the SW99 was a Smith & Wesson version of the P99 with what looked like a much more rubbery grip and I think the .40 caliber, I don't remember. If you made a habit of firing a Desert Eagle I think you'd automatically be required to wear a white suit jacket and slacks with a Hawaiian shirt, a gold watch and some hideous gradient-tinted aviators. :D If I had to guess, an FN Five-Seven round would probably do about as much as a .50 AE and you wouldn't have a muzzle flash the size of a solar flare.

Indeed it is :)
Yes! :D Goody. I enjoy identifying guns... As I said, it drives my family nuts.
To be perfectly honest I think they're such stupid guns' date=' but that's the question I get all the time. "Have you fired a Desert Eagle??" "No."[/quote'] From what I hear, they're not even particularly powerful when compared to proper rounds like the .44 magnum, .454 Casull, .475 Wildey Magnum and .480 Ruger. Or the S&W 500, for that matter...it seems like the eight inches of barrel would be a big help. The Desert Eagle is assumed to be the largest-caliber pistol available on the market (even though the Zeliska and Thompson Contender have bigger calibers) so I would guess people ask the question because they find the thought of a petite woman firing a Desert Eagle hilarious.

Ouch. Should be fine' date=' just keep it clean... Mine healed up very quickly. Glad I took it out before my son was born, though.[/quote'] I have a fairly high pain tolerance, so found the piercing itself fine, this is much worse. I've heard it heals very quickly so fingers crossed :) I'm glad I got it, I don't see many people with septum piercings where I live. Thanks for the heads up :)

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
