Re: Who are your current top 5 bands?

Thanks! It's funny... I don't know anyone in person who's as much of a Metal fan as I am' date=' but on coming onto this site I'm really surprised at how much I don't know and (relative to a lot of people on here) how mainstream my tastes are! I mean, it's kind of cool to see how much more Metal there is for me to explore and I've still barely scratched the surface, but it's a little daunting! :P[/quote'] That's something I've had to accept myself that I feel more people should acknowledge: there will ALWAYS be someone that knows more than you. I've been humbled a number of times in many places, so I try not to make assumptions anymore. I would say that I have a good sized metal collection and a pretty decent scope and knowledge of the music, especially for someone of my age, but there are tons of people out there who are more hardcore, have been into it longer, and just simply know more than I do. Especially on one of my other forums, I'm definitely one of the smallest fish in that pond, so I receive a lot of recommendations there. I tend to give more recommendations than I receive here, and on another forum it's about equal, which is why I have 3, they all fulfill different needs. The metal world is huge, yet relatively small, which is largely because of how many dedicated and knowledgeable fans and musicians there are. Sent from my HTC PH39100 using Tapatalk 2

Yes, absolutely. I was prepared that there would be the odd band that's popular here, but I hadn't come across, but I was surprised how little I do know compared to some people on here. It is ultimately a good thing as I'm always wanting to expand my musical horizons (beyond Metal, as well), but it is a little daunting knowing how much music there is to check out and trying to know where to start! I seem to like bands from most Metal genres, but kind of like a handful from each, unlike these other guys who could probably name hundreds! I dread to think what it must be like for a 14-year-old newbie who listens to nothing but Slipknot, Metallica and Korn... A headache, most likely! ;)

Haha, thanks! I seem to like all Metal genres except for Power, Glam and this whole wave of generic Deathcore with dodgy dance music implemented really awkwardly (like The Shitting!). Not too big on traditional Metal, either (I dig Sabbath and Motorhead, though), but I guess I'll give anything a try! :) I'd definitely like to get into more Doom... stuff with super-heavy riffs like My Dying Bride or Electric Wizard!

Iron Monkey is from England, mid-90s - one of the guys went on to join Electric Wizard. I really dig the vocals and there are some good, heavy, stoney riffs in there. For disgusting doom I usually reach for Burning Witch, an acquired taste but one of my favorites. It's been a long time since I heard Orange Goblin, must check them out again. All of the suggestions threads here are awesome resources for whatever genre.

Especially considering that you're a bit younger, it's not surprising, I frequently found myself in the same situations when I was younger, and I still do at times. The only comfort I can offer is that the overwhelming feeling of how much is out there never goes away, and it really only gets stronger with time, as the more knowledge you obtain and music you collect, the more you realize that you could never possibly hear everything. I have close to 2000 albums, all but maybe 50 of those are metal, and my wishlist is still longer than my collection list. It always grows faster than the collection list too, but honestly that's part of the fun. I've long said that the best thing about forums is giving and receiving recommendations. They're literally all over on this site, but they're grouped up a bit better in some threads than others. If Relentless sends you the links, I think you'll find at least a few things you would dig. Hey man! :) How's it going? Good to meet you! I do like Motorhead an awful lot. One of the bands that got me into Metal. Hearing 'Ace of Spades' on Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 for PS2 (anyone remember that??) was definitely pretty life-changing! Seen them like 3 times!
Sorry for the late reply. That's great you like them, they are my favourite band and have been for about 3 years :D

There's an insane amount of music out there. It's less daunting if you break it down into smaller chunks. I tend to base my purchases around what I'm craving at the time. For example recently I've been craving mostly doom. So the last few albums I've bought were all doom albums. back on topic though Darkthrone Testament Iron Maiden Blind Guardian Obituary

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
