Two more solar panels arrived yesterday, these ones are for the tractor shed/workshop. I'm wondering how bloody old I have to be before I stop making jobs for myself that include crawling through the roof space. Part of the shed is open roof so running cables over the rafters can be done from a ladder but the electronics workshop and timber workshop are fully clad and sealed which means it's crawling around the roof space with all the bugs, years of dust, bushfire ash and cobwebs. I'm too old for this shit!

For some reason whenever I see Peter Frampton mentioned I get angry and I always think "Peter Fucking Frampton" in disgust.

No idea why and I don't think I have ever heard a Peter Frampton song.

But if I am going to bear a bizarre irrational grudge against someone's name, it might as well be Peter Fucking Frampton.

Yeah, why not. I don't think I've ever heard a Peter Frampton song either. Don't hate him. Just don't care.

It's Nick Fucking Cave for me. I have heard a couple of songs and disliked them mightily, plus he is the darling of the 'critics', like Helen Fucking Garner. We have a small cultural pool here and some people are elevated to sainthood and can do no wrong.

But yes they fucking can.

Never really had a sports grudge, even when I played competitive sports I never really held grudges. There was always teams to beat and teams like Collingwood were always the butt of jokes but I don't remember having grudges. Grudge by suburbia/towns used to be a thing when I was at secondary school, the only time the High School and the Technical School got along was when it came to the school fights against the neighbouring towns.

Peter Frampton, formerly of the late 60's English rock group Humble Pie released a live solo album in 1976 that sold 8 million copies that year and was the biggest selling live album of all time for 2 decades. They played several songs from it on the radio all day and all night in the 70's, it was fucking garbage. Probably too innocuous to really hate the dude but it's certainly nothing you'd need to go out of your way to hear.

Nick Cave on the other hand is a sad act. People talk about him like he's some kind of genius, or modern day Bob Dylan or something, but personally I just don't get the appeal at all.

Ah hey it’s very different in South Australia, very much a case of Port Adelaide supporters like myself and I looked down on bye the rest of the football following public. I don’t acknowledge the pretend rivalry between the two S. Australian AFL teams, and a sentiment held by most Port Adelaide people is the power or not, have never been, and will never be Port Adelaide. I so I guess that’s a grudge I hold against a team, and I have an irrational and very much in doctrine dislike of the Norwood football club and buy extension Norwood and its surrounding suburbs as far as proper sporting grudges are concerned.

If I think about it more  I guess I could say I have an illogical grudge against motley Crüe and by extension all things Glenn but that could just be because I feel like as metalheads are supposed to hate that stuff

While it was fun to visit, and I admit I do enjoy the Aussie accents and the slang, I have absolutely no interest in living down there and now I can add Nick Cave's undoubtedly fetid & noxious farts to my list of reasons why.

There was apparently a real sports grudge between Adelaide and Melbourne when Uncle Jeff 'stole' the GP out from under Adelaide's noses. My parents went to Adelaide the same year the GP started in Melbourne and they were warned by hotel owners all over the place that upset GP fans would not take kindly to them when they saw Victorian plates on the car. Mum and Dad said that if anything they noticed the opposite, plenty of people who were happy the state lost the GP, it's massive disruption and it's massive money pit and they hoped Melbourne kept it forever.

That was 30 years ago now (or thereabouts) and then the other night on the news when they reported that Melbourne secured the big waste of money until 2035 the news tried to report that Dictator Dan was now upsetting Adelaide because they had huge hopes of getting the GP back. Personally the GP doesn't bother me, I don't live near it, and if we didn't waste millions on cars going around in circles we'd waste it on something else, but if Adelaide really want it I'm happy to settle state rivalries and give it too them.

Oh we feel so disheartened that you wouldn't choose our wonderful country to reside in. :P

TBF to Nick the guy does do a lot for the local music scene, he was instrumental in saving several iconic music venues from demolition and over the years he's put more into the local industry than many of those who seek recognition. But why he needs to make national news so often is beyond me.

You Victorians can keep the Grand Prix, Formula One has always been boring to me, and I am happy though our new premier has brought back a much more interesting race… The Adelaide 500 and Bathurst have always been the only two supercars races I’ve watched.

In other news it looks like Covid has aggravated my asthma, which is a problem because normally it’s so mild I don’t actually keep Ventolin in the house guess I need to see my doctor and get a prescription.

I gave up on tin tops when the decided the pay TV dollar was more important than fans. I stayed with them throughout the Cosworth fiasco. I stayed with them through the 'once a year driver' phase. I stayed with them through the 'control' car phase that meant only the badges changed and I hadn't missed a Bathurst in more than 35 years. Then AVESCO and the management of the Supercars went and fucked it all up. Now it's nothing more than a glorified go kart race. The only form of car racing I'm even close to following now is dirt track but even that's slowly becoming hard and harder to be a spectator for.

You need a prescription for ventolin? In Vic we can just walk in and buy them over the counter. They ask for a name and we're only allowed 2 at a time, (same for prescription anyway), but we still don't need a script. Some chemists check your name to see if you've bought from them before and they may well check if you've previously had a script but it's not needed. During the pandemic when some bright spark let the story go that ventolin was a preventative for covid our stores restricted them to 1 only and via prescription but that dropped ages ago.

It’s been that long since I’ve needed Ventolin that I actually don’t know if I still need a prescription or not, says a lot for how mild my asthma is normally. Actually both of my uncles used to race the dirt track stuff, one was a sprint car driver of the other race super sedans that stuff has been dying out in South Australia three years though.

We used to go to Murray Bridge once a year but it's dying off everywhere. It was only really a summer sport, but we used to have 3 maybe 4 tracks within a few hours drive and over the summer/autumn months there would be a race nearly every other weekend but these days there is only about 4 races a season. I've got several mates that still race Super Sedans but they aren't racing locally very often. We haven't seen a sprint car race down here for more than a decade I don't think, our closest sprint car event is now Geelong which is about 4-5 hours away.

You are missing out on a lot of fun. I hate most of the NRL teams other than the bane of my life, the Parramatta Eels and quite enjoy mentally re-arranging where each team ranks in my most hated list. And there's the schadenfreude when a hated team is humiliated. A sweet emotion that can be indulged in without guilt perhaps only in the contexts of sport and politics.

When it comes to politics the joy in saying a despised figure humiliated is often outweighed from eight by the fact that it’s probably going to result in them getting more popular. As far as sport goes it’s a very different story than my most hated teams list very rarely changes. I still think it’s the most satisfying thing in the world watching England come to Australia for the ashes and be systematically dismantle time after time after time.

From crawling through roof spaces full off dust, ash and bugs to laying on the ground getting covered in dried road grime and dirt. Woohoo, today I have to service the ute!

Service the ute. While I am aware that 'ute' is what you lot call a pickup truck, but still to a Yank like me when I hear "service the ute" first thought was it sounds like you're gonna go outside and have your way with one of the sheep or something.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
