I´ve been sort of busy for couple weeks. Started working at nights to get some more income. I like it, but it makes my rhytm really weird and i´ve had to sort of come up with a whole different routine to my life. Like now it´s 5 in the morning, came home from work a moment ago and now i start working on some music stuff.. sleep at 16-17pm and wake up at 24. :D

So basically you're on... Australian time? Great, that's just what we need, another poster on Australian time. :D

It is tough to find inspiration for music when your schedule shoves it into the corners, good luck with that.

Actually it´s been the opposite for me, early morning seems to be the perfect time for me to spark creativity and inspiration! :)

And yeah.. i suppose my life runs pretty much in Ozzie time currently. :D

I feel you there. Even when vacationing in an idyllic setting, I have a hard time being away from metal, no matter how busy I stay. Good luck.

Oh man. It’s not even that idyllic because it’s so goddamn hot and we all get sunburnt. I put sunscreen on everywhere except my feet and guess what. Feet redder than the Russian army. I can’t understand how my wife can sit down on the sand and swim etc and be out for five or six hours on a 34 degree day. It’s hell on earth.

I’m looking forward to hitting the freeway tomorrow, I can tell you. Back in the city: air conditioning, cold beers and metal. God I’m salivating...

Yeah, you don't think about sunburns on your feet until you get them, and you'll slather your feet every time you go out in the sun without shoes afterwards. I did that in Hawaii, it hurt to wear shoes for over a month because the burns were so bad. Fucking miserable. I think beer and metal sounds like vacation enough.

Well I should have known that the Christmas spirit which seemed to have brought my whole family closer then we'd been for years wouldn't last. Guess what? I've been kicked out as has my other brother. 1 week to get my shit and get out so the cyclist brother can move one of his mates in here for free. Also he's not talking to me anymore after delivering that news.

That’s a pretty quick turn-around time to find somewhere else. Too bad man :(

As for me, I’m now flying solo back in Melbourne, sipping a pint at my local and feeling fine.

It’s Lemmy memorial day at the metal pub (2 years since he died?) with all sorts of Lemmy things happening and cheap Jack and Cokes. I’m expecting True Belief to swing past Castle Requiem in t-minus 60 minutes. True Belief and I are the road crew.

So I am now in talks with the bank to work out if it may be possible to actually buy a property. I'm not 100% certain this will go anywhere but worth a look.

Great thing to do if you can, with property prices going up all the time it’s easy money as far as investments go. Interest rates are so low in Australia too so it’s a great time to buy.

The Countess and I bought a unit early then sold it to buy the Castle in a decent suburb, and it rises in value by between 5-10k every month. The way I like to look at it is that there’s an imaginary empty swimming pool in the backyard and once a month someone comes along with a wheelbarrow full of cash and dumps $10,000 into it. I just sit here watching the treasure build-up!

We plow a lot of our income into the mortgage because as our loan dwindles and the property value rises it’s a good outcome.

Many of these threads, including this one, aren't really 'Games' are they?

So at the moment I'm the only person actually on the entire site. I'm all alone in the Castle. There's 20/20 cricket on TV, wine in my glass and a whole night with no responsibilities. Time to get metal.

This is the ongoing overlap of threads, logically this thread would sit in Off Topic or even Deep & Meaningful.  Same with how the "Metal Threads" have band threads when we have a whole section dedicated as a "Band Forum".  Work to be done but...well life.

I don't have a beef with it; it just struck me as a thing.

I wonder where this usage of 'beef' came from? There's beef between me and you. We've got beef. It's weird. Very American.

It may in fact not be possible but no harm in investigating right? If circumstances do allow it I've just solved all accomodation issues for the foreseeable future without re-entering an extremely unhealthy environment. If not then perhaps I'll spend an extended period of time in Melbourne around the middle of January

I'm sure @True Belief will let you crash on his couch for a while. Right TB? ;)

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
