What's on your mind?

I never got around to mowing the lawn.

The castle grounds look abandoned and forlorn, a windswept arboreal ruin of weeds and weeping willows, the trees and fountains, the stones and statues, decaying remnants of grandeur, eldritch monuments of love departed and the unending curse of time...

And I'm sure his wife must be thrilled, like mine is with the state of our kitchen!

I have too much on my mind lately, and I find myself shutting down as a result. I've been doing as much painting as I can on my limited schedule, but I feel like it's not enough. I'm touching up some old work now to bring it in line with my newer stuff. I hate needing to spend these last few weeks before the show on that, rather than making new work. I still hold out hope that I can do one more new one. Unfortunately we have a family trip coming up for the last week of September, and I can't beg off. The October 1st deadline looms! My wife and son have just come down with a cold, which I'm sure will hit me like the fist of doom in a day or two, and the kiddo starts kindergarten in a week... I'm nervous on his behalf, it's gonna be a big change. The only thing that's really making me happy right now is the new Akercocke album.

My wife haunts the halls and galleries in sadness, dressed in deep mourning, communing with unspoken spirits, and taking forays into the neighbouring countryside to slake her thirst on the blood of buxom wenches in erotic orgies of lascivious darkness exclusively.

I watch the football of doom on the television of emptiness and despair, although great is my pleasure at my triumphant team's might, although cursing, am I, the idiocy of post-game interviews of infernal dumbness.

Good luck with your art. You'll have to post some photos of the exhibition once it happens. I'm sure little BabyAlabaster is going to love kindergarten.

Oh I don't know. I'm sitting on one or two decent ones for when I do form my band. It's happening soon guys, real soon.

Most times I've came up with something good, short, spellable and pronounceable, I've looked it up and it already existed.

The main way I can come up with something original is typically through misspelling or use of foreign or made up words (which is bad for spreading yourself).

I've came up with a couple of original names (such as Lysosome), but I think they may suck.

I'm actually True Belief. I started a second account called 'Requiem' to talk to myself about the bands I like, then I started a third account as 'Vampyrique' to talk about Cradle of Filth with Requiem without compromising my manly status as True Belief. I think that makes sense...

Turns out that the best version is 'Requiem'.

Seriously though, I don't know where Vampy lives but damn he'd fit right in at Castle Requiem that's for sure. For now though it's just True Belief and I who are brothers from other mothers around these parts. It'd be cool to meet @Will but he's a nerdy university kid who fears our metalness greatly. ;)

I actually really enjoy musicals sometimes. I have to be in the right mood of course, but I like the whole nightlife/dinner/show culture in Melbourne. For years I told myself I hated musicals but in the end I just had to face the facts that I'm a song and dance man.

Vampyrique and yourself have provided some interesting reading recently :) However, do you assume Vampyrique is male or have I missed something.?.probably the latter..not that it matters..good reading fodder guys.

Sounds a lot like my yard. It gets away from me every year due to family obligations and band practice, I doubt I'll ever have a respectable yard. At least it isn't the worst on my street, I'm thankful for the underachievers down the street!

I could be a genderless bot created by Requiem to spam the boards with more content to make it seem like it's a lively place.

Or perhaps, I'm simply a Renfield sent out by Count Requiem to do his bidding, prattling on about Cradle of Filth and Moonspell.

C'mon Requiem, even a humble Texan like King Diamond can be seen mowing his lawn.

A mystery then, what more would we expect from fabled Nosferatu such as these?

Anyway genuinely contemplating whether life is worth living right now. Seriously guys and gals I may actually wind up in hospital I'm THAT sick.

You could always join us, the undead. It's only a halfway commitment to death.

I fell asleep at the wheel today and rear-ended a pickup truck. My car isn't anything fancy, but it's only had one oil change and I already smashed it to shit. Nobody was hurt and I guess it could have been worse, but I'm pretty angry with myself about it. The real pisser is that I was only about 5 blocks from home when it happened, I almost made it. I barely slept last night, I couldn't get cool and the dogs kept me awake throughout the night, so I'm sure that's why I was so tired. I was hoping to get a new mattress with some of our excess funds we've had as of late, but I guess that will have to go to an insurance deductible instead. FML.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
