Can't believe I'm going to be 20 on saturday, for some reason 20 sounds a lot older than 19 xD

That's right, I remember now. You and my son have the same birthday. Good stuff. 20 was a lot like 19, as I recall, you have a few years yet before life crushes you... :D

That's great FA. Yeah you could say that. He decided he was gonna buy a house so we're all moving in there. Trouble is we lose 1 bedroom so living arrangements are not finalised. Neither myself nor our other housemate really have anywhere else to go. We'll certainly try and make this work but if it can't her and I might need to find ourselves a place to share. Honestly things are getting very strained between my brother and I.

Also wow I thought I felt like shit yesterday? Yeah I ain't getting out of bed today.

Sorry to hear things are still tense between you guys, best wishes there.

It's just tough. Whenever I try and talk with him about issues he just insists problems are my making and not to worry about it. He's stopped short of saying we've got to start sorting out our own shit quick smart but it's the definite vibe he's getting at. We keep saying he's taken in two people who have pretty serious mental health problems and there is no easy fix to things. With any luck this year I land a job and can start renting my own place, maybe with the other housemate, I just think perhaps the brother isn't the best person to live with. Doesn't make time to understand people's problems.

Every group of older people looks at this type of thing and shakes their head hahaha. I bet when I'm 57 I'm going to look back at 37 year old me and say "you still had your youth!!". I'll try to remember this as I approach 40 with Father Alabaster!

We can take pointers from Macabre, he still has a youthful outlook.

It's the day of the move. I hate moving and don't like the new place (feel free to mock for following comment). It has a bad energy to it - certainly not haunted by any stretch one visit was enough for me to feel that much - just a negative vibe the house puts off.

It sounds like you have significant misgivings about the move, and that your own uncertainty about change in your life is being projected onto the space that you find yourself moving into, causing you to associate character with inanimate objects. Seems to me like you need to exorcise the ghosts within yourself in order to come to peace with your new environment. Let go of the ghosts, RelentlessOblivion, let go, and embrace your evolution in space and time. Embrace, RestlessOblivion. Embrace, and be healed.

I hadn't thought about that so thank you. I am trying to go into this with an open mind though and there's plenty of positives I can see. For one rent is going to be $125 a week whereas currently I'm paying $200. New place is mostly carpet making it far easier to keep clean (white tiles through most of the house here = big problem), we actually have grass and a garden in the new place. Also since my brother kind of owns it now we can make whatever changes we like. The only real concern is how we're fitting 3 people into a 2 bedroom property. Also the fact that there's no ducted heating or cooling.

That's $75 week extra for CDs and mercy!

I'd take tile over carpet any day, can't stand carpet. Half of that is because of the cats; carpet would turn every little feline indiscretion into a traumatic experience. "Fitting three people into a two bedroom property" describes most of my living conditions for the past 12 years. Totally workable. I hope you can get on with your brother though, that sounds like the most stressful part of the situation - still probably better than living with your stepdad, though, right?

It's my son's fifth birthday. I just made a pot of coffee and I'm gearing up for a day at the Boston Children's Museum, where snot-nosed little shits trade germs while fighting over durable but thoroughly used artifacts designed to prepare them for practical lives in construction or applied sciences. ...ok, I'm kind of kidding, it'll be fun. We just have to pry him away from the computer and get him out the door.

And, happy actual birthday, Dave!

We are both 37 and now both have a kid who is 5.

Also on my mind is that I just purchased a ticket to Insomnium in May. I'm excited already. Marduk/Gorguts/Mgla are playing tonight and I think True Belief has gone, but I couldn't justify $70 for a 50 minute Marduk set playing the entire mediocre 'Heaven Shall Burn' album without Legion on vocals. Plus I've seen them about three times now and I'm not a fan of the other bands on the bill, although everyone I meet, including last night at the pub, raves about Mgla.

I could see Gorguts not being your cup of tea, but give "Pleiades' Dust" a spin and see if you can't find something to like about it - having seen it performed live in full, I'm even more impressed. My favorite release of last year. Something about Mgla still annoys me; initially I liked them, but it feels to me like the songwriting on their last couple of albums has taken the easy way out. I've heard nothing but praise for their live show, though. Wasn't Ulcerate on that bill as well?

Great gig last night. Quick rundown:

Ulcerate were amazing, the drumming was a standout! Huge sound.

Mgla - one of the best performances I've seen. Incredible sound fuck it was huge.

Gorguts - didn't think we'd get anything off of 'From wisdom to Hate' but we did.

Marduk: first time I've seen them. Played all of 'Heaven Shall Burn..' plus Still Dead, Frontschwein, The Blonde Beast, Wolves, Panzer Division and Of Hells Fire.

Massive sound at the venue which was packed. Really great night of awesome heaviness.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
