I think it is more the internet forum thing in general than just MF.  The other forum I frequent regularly is slightly more active but is full of Polls and VS threads to the point were are now asking the mods to create a sub forum for them as they are hardly constructive to debate.  I joined one recently and it looks like even though it is new it is going the same way as more established ones.

From the outside Obama seems like a much better president. Of course not living in the States I don't really have all the information to pass judgement.

The two were totally different. Bush was a moron who was a hero for the upper class and big business, giving them tax cuts and deregulating their corrupt machine. He then perpetuated the decay with knee-jerk bailouts that just lined the pockets of fat cats. Obama's problem is that he was largely ineffective at not only fixing the problems that Bush caused (in addition to backing down off of many campaign promises for social change), but then pushed through that god awful Affordable Care Act. All it did was make one of the most overpriced and corrupt machines in the nation even more expensive by forcing everyone to buy a broken product, and now that it's required by law, every healthcare provider in the nation feels that they have the right to increase their prices greatly. Donald Trump would be a presidential caricature that cares only about money, and would further decay our social fabric and further erode the middle class until there is only a wide valley between poverty and wealth. People not only can't seem to see that they're getting fucked, they're bending themselves over the table and spreading their cheeks, only to wonder why their ass hurts when the affair is complete. Electing an assclown like Trump might actually be enough to get some of the disillusioned masses to pull their heads out of the sand and demand something better.

We have the opposite problem here. The majority think they've being fucked when the deed has already been done. Of course now the government is more or less powerless because any legislation trying to fix things will be torn down if the opposition gets elected. It being an election year this makes any and all potential laws little more then appeals for the support of the masses.

You know what? Sometimes I wonder if any country actually deserves the right to elect its governments. If we can't get it right maybe it would be better to just have one national party that does what's needed regardless of popularity.

Benevolent dictatorship perhaps?

Who determines the composition of this all powerful 'party'? And who determines when their time is up? You've seen 1984 right?

That's the thing though isn't it? Because so long as things go right why would you want to change parties? Since there would be no party leader you just have a pure conscience vote on every matter. Good law goes through, bad law doesn't. Has to be better then the current system which clearly doesn't work because people are idiots.

In other news, the ex (you know, the two timing hussy as FatherAlabaster put it) just texted me, and wants to meet up to talk at some point. I know I'm gonna regret asking for relationship advice here, but what the hell do I do?

Figure out what you really care about and what you really want, and if it's her than deal with it, and if it is not her than move on, if she is what you concerned about. Look at the world and see if you can spot what you want to do and where your focus is drawn, if you are what you are concerned about.

Hope that is helpful, because as far as I can tell I pretty much nailed it there. Seriously though, I'm sorry your confused by your situation, and I think seeing it in the simpleist way you can might be helpful.

I think today is the first day in quite a while that I have listened to no metal at all.  Been on a Bandcamp discovery trip most of the day (between work naturally) digging up some new sounds and genres to tickle my fancy.

I have days like that pretty frequently. Today is not one of them, though...

Last real hit-out before road nationals was today. All in all I would consider it a success. Have my goals (which I'm happy to share here but not on facebook go figure) all planned out. Firstly for the 24kim time trial I want to be done around the 32 minute mark (an average speed of 40km/h). Secondly for the road race I just want to finish. If things go well I'm an outside chance of a bronze medal but that would really be pushing my luck.

I wanted to go out today and start house hunting or at least start to map out areas we are interested in moving to but the weather is appalling today!  Instead I have dug out my Tanglewood acoustic guitar and been bashing through some chords (literally bashing my way through).  Decided on the main riff to Danzig "Twist Of Cain" as my easy riff to learn.  Inevitably the JD has come out and I have been sat in my conservatory like a washed up middle aged rock star makin a hell of a fucking racket.

Sounds like a fun and certainly very productive afternoon. I spent most of my day shopping with my ex (not the most recent one). This one I am still on good terms with. I also finally managed to get a pair of shoes for my prom I am actually happy with. They're made from the finest Italian calf leather... I love staff discounts.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
