Grown up talk with the girlfriend earlier and next year's trip to Iceland, Norway and Russia is off as we have to move house again. Really pissed about that but it has to happen. As a compromise we will come to Edinburgh - a place we both love - and spend a week or so here. Sent from my HTC One_M8 using Tapatalk

That really is a bummer. I hope you guys can find something stable. Best luck.

When they call it "SufferFest" they are not fucking kidding. That was freakin' painful. Warm-up, 15x1 minute max effort / 1 minute recovery, cool down. Took 48 minutes 54 seconds to get through and in that time I covered 23.84km (14.81 miles) at an average speed of 29.23km/h (18.16mph) bringing my total for the week up to 156.84km (97.45 miles). That right there folks is why I look so damn fine in lycra :D

@Iceni, Ne Obliviscaris is apparently coming to the USA, but they're splitting the bill with Cradle Of Filth and Butcher Babies. The good news is, I think they're playing first...

Good Lord...hm, so they'll be in Baltimore. Well, here's hoping I'm in DC in February...

...f*cking Butcher Babies, really? It's like Green Carnation opening for Five Finger Death Punch...

If CoF exclusively play material from Principle, Dusk, and Cruelty they may not be too bad...

So had plans this morning but kind of overslept a bit (as in I just woke up at 10:30am) so I'll push them to tomorrow.

Slacking off, eh? Ran out of pennies to drop?

I saw Cradle on the Midian tour (the album right after Cruelty) and they were terrible, especially Dani. Could not hack his vocals, feedback everywhere, just a pile of shit all around.

Holy hell that was torture. The distance may seem a bit lower tonight but the intensity was way higher. 36min 7sec encompassing warm-up, cool down, and about 25 minutes working between 90 and 110% of my FTP. Covered 18.64km (11.58 miles) at an average speed of 30.98km/h (19.25mph) for a grand total of 175.27km (108.90 miles) so far this week. Will I manage the 24.73km (15.36 miles) I need tomorrow? Stay tuned to find out.

Thank fucking christ I have a recovery day tomorrow 'cause I am completely wrecked. Tonight's session was just stupid. Between my warm-up and cool down were 2 10 minute half-ironman efforts (75% of FTP) bookending 5x5mins on (at 130% of FTP) 1min off (60% of FTP). All up it was 1 hour and 10 minutes, I covered 34.33km (21.33mi) at an average speed of 29.43km/h (18.28mph). So that's a total of 209.6km (130.23mi) for the week and 102.6km (63.75mi) on the trainer. Just FYI you work about 2/3 harder on an indoor trainer then you would on the road or track as well.

I was already insanely motivated to push myself harder then ever before. I have my own tandem, I've got a nifty new trainer, I've just spent a fortune on bike stuff, I have a plethora of challenging sessions to chose from, my passion for the sport has been rekindled, and most of all I feel as though I let down my pilot at nationals. I believe I have something to prove both to myself and to the team co-ordinators. All of this has inspired me to attack each training session with a ferocity and determination I never have before. We can add one more source of inspiration to that list. A "rival" team member decided that my friendly joke comment on his facebook warranted heavy trash talking. This guy frankly is not that good - training hard he's about the same level I was with my admittedly poor training attitude. For him to be quite dismissive of me seeing how hard I'm training makes me want to grind him into dust.

I hope I'm not coming off as arrogant here because those are simply facts. Anyway tomorrow I have 2 hours on the trainer in a session that basically describes itself as worse then the mind's most demented notions of hell.

I grazed my hand with a nail from a nail gun yesterday, or maybe it was a splinter of wood dislodged by the nail, hard to say. I got just the slightest cut and feel like such a lucky idiot. A half inch over it would have gone right into the big knuckle of my right hand and totally fucked my promising career as a bassist. Every day we are intact to make art or do whatever it is we love to do is a blessing.

Amen Gorbo I came to that realisation last year after my crash.

Anyway two hours and twenty minutes on the trainer. Something weird happened in session so all my data was lost but I'd have done at least 70km. Hill climbing efforts, hard attacks, a sprint finish, it was basically a race simulation.

Jeez, glad you're ok. I've had a few close calls. The worst was probably when I nicked my thumb on a tablesaw. Hand injuries are no bueno.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
