What's on your mind?

I wicked want to learn to play the bass in that fluid psychedelic style from the 70's. I've been listening to hard rock form that period recently. This morning I heard Phenomenon by UFO, which is such a great album! So beautiful and they put the bass so prominently in the mix. That there is the way I want to play.  I've bemoaned many times here my sorrowful lack of musical talent, but what I've not mentioned is that giving up the bass for long periods has never brought me satisfaction, so I'd rather struggle at playing it than not play it at all.

Yeah man, you have to stick with it. I've hit lots of walls with my playing. The only way for me to stay at the level I need to be at, to pull my songs off well, is to practice daily. I find it best when I devote some time each day to new material and new techniques, it makes the old stuff seem easier but also more interesting.

Amen brother. Skill only comes with hours and hours of honing your craft. I feel your pain Gorbo it's the reason I'm resuming guitar lessons as of this Wednesday. I just can't bear to let my babies suffer any longer. Well except for the ML...that one can just fuck right off.

Fear not! For we have kept the flame ov trve Metal bvrning bright - er, dark - umm...

Anyway...

We have held fast to a flickering flame that can not be extinguished, a sacred trust burning in the soul of night demanding a constant stream of novel content with glossy images and pithy written stuff and ...um conspicuous metalness down from the ages of rock?

Call not ovr work by the name ov mere "content", sir! For we who have povred ovr very sovls into these posts, be they never so black, deserve not svch a base epithet as "content creator"; nay, we are trve practitioners ov the dark arts, thovgh ovr posts be never so hvmble, so poorly written, so devoid ov grammar, not to say logic, or even meaning... For does not the black göat ride forth on wings ov torment? :D

I was going to so metal mood, but then, you are most of the time. As for the new forum, I love it, but it does seem to be a bit slow to load sometimes.

Oddly, it's been much quicker for me, although I sometimes have to refresh the page to get all the nav options.

Just one more day to stand the heat. :x I'll be glad when the temperatures are back normal again here.

Also, the new forum looks really great. Very easy to navigate and a way better design then the previous one. But maybe that's because it's almost the same as the forum where I'm admin, haha.

New nav is very easy to use, looks good, I do miss the old MetalForum logo though. Maiden lettering is just so...metal. New logo should be in Mayhem lettering methinks to signify ovr trve gr1m necrokvltness.

Also got the house to myself for a week so that's pretty sweet.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!
