What's on your mind?

There's been a lot of pressure today. I haven't mentioned it to you guys earlier, but I got a text this afternoon informing me one of my best friends has been admitted to the hospital due to a haemorrhage and fractured skull. The last news I've heard mentioned her condition being stable at the moment, but it can still go all ways... I've also been asked to help score an animated movie together with some other musicians with whom I often play. I still haven't made up my mind; it's tempting to play again, but on the other hand I mostly quit because of the emotions it awakens and that still hasn't changed.
Somehow I didn't see this :( I'm so sorry for your friend! I hope everything will be alright!
FUUUUUUUUUUUUCK!!!!!! The top left side of my mouth feels like someone is ripping at it with a rusty hook. Taking over-the-counter pain meds but they're doing fuck all. Looks like I need to see a dentist ASAP.
That doesn't sound good at all. :/

Reckon it's probably just a wisdom tooth coming through. Why the fuck are they called wisdom teeth anyway all they do is cause pain and misery. Oh and in other news I've been kicked out of uni with no avenue of appeal because I "failed to show any ingenuity" in responding to a show cause notice for last semmester's failure due to having no internet for like ten days so missed the deadline. Even if I had got my response off in time though "the reasons stated in your letter are not sufficient to offset your failure to meet academic outcomes". So I'm out of the degree and have a black mark on my transcript which will prevent me from undertaking higher education for the next five years. Wonderful. Now what THE FUCK am I going to do with myself? But it's not all bad news I bought some new shit to help cheer me up and smashed tonight's training sesh out of the park whilst blasting all of Symphonies Of Sickness by Carcass and up to 'Cursed In Eternity' from De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas by Mayhem.

I am so sorry to hear that! :( What were you studying? Do you maybe have a chance of employment without a degree?

Shit, dude, that's fucking awful. You can't even just do the year over? It's like they were looking for an excuse to get rid of you or something. That just blows. I really hope shit picks up for you. On the upside, think about all the stress you won't be under during this energetic and formative time... :D

Now more then ever I'm thankful that I have friends (including you guys) and a girlfriend. Just don't be surprised if I'm not quite my die-curious necrophiliac self :D

If you don't meet your academic performance criteria (passing at least half of your subjects in any given semmester) you are issued with a show cause notice asking you to explain why you did not meet this standards. I was only taking one subject last semmester making it impossible to pass three quarters of my workload. You have a deadline to respond which I missed due to having virtually no internet access for the best part of two weeks. When I finally did get a response off it was discarded because it was after this deadline. I emailed the dean of admissions who gave me the information I quoted earlier. I can appeal but there's no point based on that information. I'm left with a black mark on my transcript which stays there for five years meaning no other uni/college will take me. I also have to begin paying back my student loans (HECS) if I do manage to find work. Currently that debt stands at 200k and the minimum earning threshold for paying that debt was recently reduced by the government from 48k to 35k annually.

Well, considering it's still the 24th here, I guess I'll wait till tomorrow morning to post about how annoying my wife's car problems have been lately, and how the thing is turning into an unreliable money pit. :D Honestly things could be a lot worse here, and whenever they're kind of shitty I remind myself of that and wind up feeling pretty glad for what I do have. That's a ton of debt, though, Josh, and I really think you should appeal - given the amount of work you've put in, even if the appeal is pointless, don't take it lying down. I hope you can get something good out of the situation.

I'll be working on my appeal today, no harm in trying I guess, I know I'm sounding like a whiny bitch right now. Just sick of the perpetual bullshit I guess. Honestly it feels like everytime something good happens in my life I'm instantly slammed with a fresh shitstorm to deal with.

Best of luck with your appeal.

That's pretty strict :/ We have a similar system in croatia, you have to pass certain exams to pas the year, and I think you can fail a year 2 or 3 times. after that, if you don't pass that exam, you lose the right to study at universities (which I believe expires after 5 years but it's still a lot of time). I don't know much about it because I study in Italy, and there you can do whatever you want for as long as you want to, as long as your payments are regular. But try appealing, it can't hurt.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
