Did all the snow shoveling for my GF, now my back, which on the best of days isn't great, is hurting like hell. But she has arthritis in her legs, so I don't let her do it herself. In other news, it's another COLD day here in Massachusetts, which is good with me. For some reason everyone else is complaining. Record snow fall this year. Wonder when the next storm will be, probably in a day or two . . .

Cool. What sort of racing d'you do?
I do the odd bit of drag racing, I don't currently run in any specific class (mostly because drag racing in the UK isn't the most organised affair ever), I just do it because I like to go fast. Unfortunately I didn't reach my goal of 650hp at the dyno (i got 643hp), ah well, it can be fixed... with nitrous .

We clearly dodged the bullet with this last blizzard here in Maine, we were told to expect as much as 2' but got only 1". I've shoveled a huge amount of snow, as many have, this winter and my back is a bit touchy as a result, but my elbows have taken it harder somehow.

When you trick out a car to race in England, do you say "it's all hotted up." Or is that not the proper slang. Please come up with and post some sentences riddled with racing and mussel car slang if you would be so kind. I'm looking for the richest sounding slang here, not necessarily the most current, if you take my meaning. Thanks in advance.

What a nice and thoughtful boyfriend you are. I actually enjoy shoveling. I like cold weather too and hope it stays around for a while. Not looking forward to the warm temps. I hate the humidity and with all this hair the heat is not my friend.

No school for me either. I've been making some electronic music.
My friend and I are writing up this mech novel and it's going swimmingly. It's been easy and a lot of fun for me to write for it. He occasionally gripes about his own lack of productivity but when he is productive it's usually useful and brings a new spin to it. I'm really looking forward to it because we have a simple let strong Lotus Elan chassis kind of plot that still has room for some nice elaborations here and there.

What is a meck novel, Iceni, and what is a Lotus Elan Chassis kind of plot. It sounds to me like you're doing contractual writing for an established series where you've been fed the plot which is fancy in some way, and now you and a collaborator are fleshing it out with a narrative with you doing the heavy lifting and the other guy is a sort of glorified editor. Is that so? Did I get it?

Gundam, Code Geass and Evangelion are probably the biggest animes in the genre; Pacific Rim was an American mech movie that achieved critical praise. As for the Lotus Elan, it was a light sports car; Lotus are known for their simple, light and strong chassis. In the same way the plot is straightforward but pretty robust and purposeful. Actually, no, it's entirely original. I spent the better part of my free time yesterday crafting general political histories for five different fictional countries on an entirely original map. Additionally, he's not an editor, it's a much more equitable relationship than that. He's provided most of the overarching ideas as well as some of the central ones; he also provided the basic premise. If anything, I'm elaborating on his ideas. I write more than he does, but his writing is stuff like dialogue and thematic elements that I'm not as good at crafting. In addition, he just generally has trouble getting stuff down on paper when it comes to something like this, perhaps because he's seen so much media that he's trying to figure out how best to navigate the genre.

That sounds like a cool project. I'm glad you're putting your writing skills to some creative use! Do you have any desire to publish it? The other guitarist in my band is looking at a pretty sweet vintage Kramer (amazing that you can say "vintage" about something made in 1990), and I went to check it out with him on Sunday, and now I want a new guitar. I don't need one; I just want one. Yaaargh. I hope my other guitars don't feel me thinking about a Gibson baritone SG while I'm playing them and get jealous.

I assume the slang is the same as in the states. Or was that sarcasm?

Better watch out with that. I heard guitars are really jealous critters. Cellos on the other hand...
I really miss her. I wish I knew what I've done wrong....

Ha. Moi, je suis pas comme ça. The French answer I actually wanted to provide you with is almost completely absent due to circumstances (= a lot of beer), but I'll be sure to be Frenchy enough next time.

So weirdly need a legal background but not an actual degree to be a registered notary and justice of the peace. How the fuck does that work?
There's some position in Los Alamos called Magistrate Judge or something which requires basically no qualification at all yet asks that you judge cases between lawyers. A girl I know with no college education was running against only one opponent for this position and I hope she bloody lost because she'd probably be crap.

Yeah no that wouldn't fly in Australia. Even judges in the Magistrates Court need a degree and an extensive history of legal practice before they become part of the panel. I can't think of a worse hell then sitting on traffic violations and minor misdemeanors for twenty years anyway.

I'm sorry I haven't been around too much lately. I have a show coming up with the string quartet on Saturday, kind of a big deal - it's our first "metal" show (actually a metalcore show). Unfortunately I just came down with another shitty little cold, and I'm really hoping my voice will hold up. It's been strange practicing with them and a drummer, but it's working to some degree, and I think it would be cool if we get more shows like this, although I get the sense that they want to do more strictly classical stuff coming up. I also have my first Black Harvest show in ten years scheduled for this summer in Massachusetts. I'm really looking forward to it, although there's a daunting amount of work ahead with getting everybody up to speed by then. I can't describe what a great feeling it is to be playing some of these songs with a real band at last.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
