What's on your mind?

85 kilometer hills ride today. It really, really, hurt. Have a 60 kilometer recovery ride tomorrow before a whopping 160 kilometer hills ride on Sunday, then a rest day before more hills on Tuesday, lactic threshold ergo session Wednesday, cadence ergo session Thursday, then 90 km of hills next Friday, and repeat Saturday and Sunday. All in a desperate attempt to be fully prepared for National Championships in about four weeks time.

Re: What's on your mind?

Very well, if I missed those qualifiers then I apologize. Yes, it is a Christian notion to be in the world but not of the world, but Scriptures abound cautioning against rationalizing arrogance from the premise of man's spiritual degeneracy, the main one being 'All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God' (Romans 3:23). Not 'people' in general, just college students.:D
Again, I have made no attempts to elevate myself here, perhaps the opposite in fact. I fuck up most of what I do, but it still have my shit together more than most people I see around me. Maybe I'm more disciplined and responsible, or just make better choices, but I'm certainly not better, probably worse in fact. I just can't come to terms with most of what I see people do, and more than that, I can't even comprehend or fathom their motives, to the point that I feel I'm not a part of their group (which for the 3rd time is not to say that I belong to a better one). My point is all about wasted potential, and my confusion as to why many prefer to bury their heads in sand than operate at the level that they're all capable of. I've certainly had the same trouble with finding it difficult or impossible to understand why people do certain things, usually in the entertainment realm. Narcotics and clubbing fall pretty squarely in this category for me.

Went to sleep for 3.5 hrs, woke up, went back to work, and I've gotta push through tonight as long as I can on such little sleep. I'm so burned out my eyes are crossing in my head. I am working on a presentation that's going to be sent to the top of the food chain....chair(wo)man of NBC. kinda shitting bricks. miss you guys.

Re: What's on your mind?

My mother made me take flu vaccine when I was a kid because once I had the flu for more than a month and was really sick' date=' so she got scared. But when I got older I told her that I don't want to take it anymore, especially because some of the vaccinations in Croatia were a mix of vaccinations for normal flu and swine flu, so I didn't like not knowing what I'm getting. However, I never got the flue again, I don't know if it's because of the vaccinations.[/quote'] I don't get the flu vaccine because I tend to not be in the at risk for adverse effects of flu. They recommend it for small kids, pregnant women, and the elderly here in Ontario. As for other vaccines, my kids get theirs. My youngest has one more to get just after she turns 4 this year. When they were infants they just got cranky for a day or two after. I'm currently sick as hell. Have been for about a week now. Mostly head cold. Sent from my LG-E971 using Tapatalk

That sucks, Ghouly! I agree with Yobo. I couldn't handle that. Unless it was a project I really, really cared about, anyway... I only seem to be able to put that kind of energy into art and music. Good luck and I hope you get to catch up on your sleep. @ Atrocity, the flu vaccine definitely doesn't confer permanent immunity; the flu mutates so quickly that it's no guarantee of protection even in the current season. I, and other people I know, have gotten the flu even after having it. I suppose it's a numbers game. They hope that even partial effectiveness will be enough to prevent an outbreak from becoming an epidemic. I can understand the logic, but I selfishly don't like the shot. In any case, my kid is a good bit healthier than I was at his age, and he seems fine so far. It's beautiful weather and I imagine we'll be having plenty of long walks in the sun, brief moments of elation on the swings, confused confrontations on the steps of play equipment, and shrieks of laughter running through the cold water from the sprinklers, and maybe the occasional ice cream cone, because that's what summer is supposed to be when you're growing up. :D

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
