Do you like Judas Priest? Their drummer Dave Holland was sent to prison for 8 years for the attempted rape of an underage music student of his. It's fine if you don't want to support them, but their music is no different even with that horrible knowledge.

Yeah that’s true I will listen to them

My general feeling about NeO is that anybody else besides me having their CDs is just fine.

I used to love them back around 2007 when they started playing shows in Melbourne. Really unique and interesting band. I guess I've found their albums to be not really my thing.

They are unique, and there are things I like about them, but for some reason I can't stand them taken as a whole. I'm not surprised to hear that you don't like their albums much, their songwriting is far away from what you seem to prefer.

Let's not narrow me down too much - I do have about 1,000 CDs from Bon Jovi to Blut Aus Nord, but yes, I know what you mean.

Little known fact, about 8 or 9 years ago the vocalist from NeO and I were going to start a doom side-project. We had a name, wrote a song and everything but it fizzled out. Looking back, I should have followed through with it...

I was surprised to see But Aus Nord's name here, but I guess I would be surprised to hear that any black metal fan didn't like Ultima Thulee at the very least.

I love it how you’re not surprised to see Bon Jovi! I have BAN’s ‘The Work Which Transforms God’ and I like it very much.

Hey, your username sounds just like the band’s name!

Your propensity for glam is well noted, so I didn't bat an eye at seeing a mention of the prettiest boys to ever hail from New Jersey, lol.

You haven't heard Ultima Thulee? Don't get me wrong, I LOVE The Work Which Transforms God and all of their dissonant stuff as much or more than their mire "typical" black metal works, but Ultima Thulee is one of the most majestic atmospheric black metal albums ever. Here's a taste, but you absolutely have to hear the whole thing. I think it will appeal to you more than their later stuff.

I had to pull the trigger on a new illustration laptop yesterday; the old one was crippled. I've been running Windows 7 on older machines for years, and this new one is requiring a lot of adjustment. I remember a time when I was excited about shiny new gadgets, but now I'm just fucking annoyed. I'm sure I'll grow to love it in time...

For those that care, yes, I did get engaged. Also, my fianceé's new landlord turned out to be a total asshole so she and her daughter have moved in with my parents and I. The car they were using died so now we are saving for a car, an apartment, and a wedding. But things are going well and I'm really happy these days (which is really odd and almost disconcerting for me).

I have a few almost-but-not-quite music projects that I still think about. I like what I've been able to do with my own stuff, but I wish I'd followed through with more of the other opportunities I (might have) had. Regret hits me a bit harder now that family life has completely taken over my schedule.

I hear you big time. It's not that you resent your family for limiting what you can do, you just wish there were more hours in the day.

Exactly. I love my family and I wouldn't change anything about them (except for my son's attitude problems at school lately), but our schedule fucking blows - we don't all get enough time together or enough time to ourselves. Funny how that works... If I didn't need to sleep, I'd be all set.

You know I do take some pride in my resilience. It's not easy being vision impaired after all. Nor was it easy battling depression on and off for about five years. Even I have my limits though. Something happened today which has left me questioning why I even bother. Perhaps later I'll go into more detail but this post is already long enough.

Exactly. I’m often complaining that I wish there were more hours in the day to get through the things I really want to do after the children go to bed.

There are so many amazing things to do in first world life. I want to embrace it all!

I'm sorry to hear that Parker. I hope she gets the help she needs.

So I never did explain what happened to me the other day. Sadly there was a repeat performance today. Monday I was verbally abused for 10mins on the bus simply for being vision impaired. The abuser also made an effort to prevent me exiting the bus before another pasenger stepped in. Today while at the supermarket another complete stranger made me the target of abuse after cutting me off and promptly catching a cane to the ankle (it wasn't intentional btw). Fortunately staff intervened quickly and nothing more serious happened.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
