What's on your mind?

There's a cloud inside every silver lining isn't there. This sounds like a blessing that you should just accept and enjoy!
I just need to find something else to keep me occupied. When I'm bored, I get anxious and my mind wanders, and usually not to anything good. Any suggestions? How do you stay busy when you're bored at work? There isn't enough traffic between this site and the 2 others I'm on to keep me occupied already, so I just end up reading the news all day, which doesn't really help.

So the other day, my boss pulled me into the conference room and basically told me that he wants me to do less work/give more work to the other people that he has hired, and he wants to pay me more. Even seeing the paycheck after it happened on Friday, it still seems weird to me. Not sure how I feel about it, since I'm already bored, and now I'm being rewarded for doing less. Has this ever happened to anyone else? It's really confusing. One of his justifications was that the job is so big that it's hard for them to cover when I take time off, but I really don't take much time off, if any. Anyway, I have a feeling that I'm going to go stir crazy soon.

I can understand needing more stimulation at work, but no, every boss I've had squeezed whatever they could out of us. Promotions usually meant more responsibility without the necessary authority, and raises were often grudging.

He's not like anyone I've ever worked for. I prefer to stay busy, but I'm being told to delegate more. It's just weird, and I need to try to find another way to stay occupied.

As long as you're not worried he's trying to make you redundant and push you out, or some other weird shenanigans, then just go with it. I guess I'll try and post more here to help you stay engaged... :D

I don't really get that impression, but who knows? I'm not crazy about the job anyway, so if it happens, it happens. And thanks for that, I would much rather talk more about metal than read more news. I'm sincerely only doing about 3 hours of week each day, so I have a lot of time to fill.

Hopefully it all works out for you BAN.

In other news I'm currently planning a trip to Vietnam, because I've always wanted to go, it's surprisingly not looking like a crazy expensive trip. For a package which includes flights, transfers, accomodation, food, guided tours and so on to be about $2000 isn't too bad. Now I just need to work out when the best time to go is.

Also thought I'd mention that I'm in a much better place mentally despite all the stress of recent times. Still have my moments but well on the way to beating clinical depression.

I just got a fortune cookie that says "Live for the moment, because there is only one result in life." Not sure if that means I should stop beating myself up about all the stuff I haven't gotten done lately, or if it's telling me that I'm going to get hit by a bus tomorrow, but either way I'm going to crack another beer.
The only problems that beer doesn't solve are still made more tolerable by drinking it.

Looks like it's going to dump a bunch of snow on us as well, although I don't know if any of it will stick for very long. I can't say I'm happy about it, but I am glad it's happening on my wife's day off work so she doesn't have to deal with driving through it.

The day after the storm it will be 40s degrees go figure alabaster

We had another storm on Sunday that kept our bass player from making it to practice, but it's pretty much melted at this point. I hope this isn't the end of it, but with how disappointing this year has been for snow overall, I'm not holding my breath. The bright side is that the snow often affects my work negatively, and there hasn't been much in the way of delays or needing to throw chains, but I'm still missing it like crazy. Every time I get a taste, I just want more. Kind of like this beer I'm drinking while I await the start of the show...

Snow? What is this snow you speak of? Sure am glad it never snows where I live since I hate the cold.

Then you would not like things in my neck of the woods: here the snow is knee high!

Snow is adorable the first 14 days or so, like a winter wonderland, after that I just wish, I had a magic wand (just to stay in the settings) and could make it all dissappear!

Looking forward to spring and summer when I can go into the forest and pick dandelion - and stinging nettle leaves again.

Tip to battleling the cold: dry and warm feet!!!!

Daughter's arm is healing nicely, x-rays reveal. It's times like this that I'm glad I live in 2018, despite my predilection for various (dark) medieval times.

The Wikkid Wife of Syn and eldest Daughter of Damnation and Destitution have had to flee a peasant uprising on the estate and are currently down the coast, while I and eldest Daughter of Diabolikkal Demoniacal Deathcults remain, drawbridge raised, she in her coffin sleeping, I in the great hall, sipping blood vodka and virginal soda.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
