What's on your mind?

Just threw together that rough black metal rehearsal track, most of the time just went into setting up. There are only two of us, so a microphone for the guitar and and a microphone for the drums made it pretty simple. He only had a 2 channel input, so we had to do the vocals after the take was up, but we got a decent take within a few tries. I'm not sure if the drummer is going to try to mix it or not, and I feel like it might need more lyrics and vocal lines, but I may have something to share soon. I'm surprised at how decent it sounds, given that it is technically basement black metal.

Aaron posted this statement last October, not sure if you saw it.
"I would like to quash some recent rumours regarding the demise of My Dying Bride in the light of our previous statement. We most certainly are NOT splitting up and in fact are vigorously composing the next album right now.
The reason we have had to cancel a run of shows is due to a severe and fearful illness that has struck a member of my immediate family for which I have now dedicated all my time until signs of improvement.
The other five members of the band however are working hard to produce the next opus which will be our debut for new label partners Nuclear Blast and will be released in 2018. I will do my part when the time comes and I can assure fans that it is going to be suitably epic.
Apologies to all who were looking forward to seeing us perform live but rest assured, we will be back!
Cheers
Aaron Stainthorpe"

I guess all anyone can do is be sympathetic and hope for the best, you know? I hope bridges aren't getting burnt.

No, I didn't see it. I'm pretty much disconnected from metal news unless I see it here or receive word from a friend IRL since I'm not on facebook. That's too bad though, hope his family member comes through.

Didn’t his dad die only 2 years ago? Hopefully it’s not as serious as this...??

Looking forward to it.

Yesterday  I saw Lich King (pizza thrash), Hidden Intent (thrash), Requiem (blackened thrash) and Feast of Crows (core-ish). It was pretty fun, I'm pretty sore.

The only tank I'm interested in right now is a sensory deprivation tank. Looks like my son brought home yet another lovely virus from school, it's hitting me like a hammer right now.
Fuck, that blows. My coworker is out, and the boss is covering for her, but he's really sick with something nasty. I was pretty sure I was getting it on Monday, but I was mostly over my symptoms by Tuesday, so I think it missed me and I may have just eaten something that didn't agree with me. He's had it for a couple of weeks now, and I'm still concerned that I might get it. We're better at sharing sickness than anything else as humans, which is kind of depressing.

So I found a rather decent session IPA last night. A craft beer with a citrus hit though I can't recall the name.

On another note are any of you guys familiar with the game Cards Against Humanity? I was thinking of maybe making a similar game for the forum but not sure if it would work, or even if anyone would be interested.

I love a good citrusy IPA, do tell! I know the name of the game and think I know the premise, but I've never played.

It was a real session IPA, the alcohol content wasn't too high and that citrus finish made it very drinkable. A bit of a blood orange and mango thing which was very refreshing.

As for the card game yeah the premise is to complete a sentence with the funniest/most offensive possible answer. I.E Don't worry kid, it gets better, I've been living with blank for twenty years = I've been living with a meth addiction for 20 years.

Today was Winter's birthday, and it was an eventful one. Band practice this morning, then brunch, then nap time, then a trip to the children's museum, then dinner. She was really grumpy at brunch, so we almost called off the children's museum, but I'm glad that we didn't. All of the exhibits were interactive and had all kinds of cool mechanics and interfaces, so they played hard and learned a lot. I have a feeling we'll be going back, we didn't give ourselves enough time to explore everything before they closed.

Sounds like Winter had a good birthday then. That's great.

Meanwhile in the ever unpredictable world of your boy RO the planned move fell through again. All I'll say is things need to be sorted out back 'home' before there's a room for me there. The whole process has me very frustrated and stressed. Also it's fucking hot, and getting hotter in the coming days.

She did, but now she's sick this morning. It sounds like the same thing my boss has, almost like it skipped me and went for her. She's got those sea lion bark sounding coughs and looks like she feels miserable. This season has been absolute shit, the worst winter I can recall. It has snowed all of twice, and sickness has been much more prevalent than usual. While I'm at it, fuck this whole last year, and the year before that. That may sound like an extreme jump from what I've listed here, but it's just another layer on top of the bullshit that won't seem to fucking end right now.

I'm not really a huge fan either. Hidden Intent are relatively small and from Adelaide ad the other two are local Ballarat bands.

The show was good, tight performances from the bands and high crowd energy for all but Feast of Crows (who went on first) probably the most time I've spent in a mosh pit in one night.

I like the game, I think I've played it a few times.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
