Today was a good day

So, I was trying to work with a government agency to get a job and go back to school. Then they found out from my psych doc that I use weed, now they won't help me. Really, why is it o.k. to take anti-depressants prescribed by a doctor that don't do a fucking thing for me, but if I want to take something that actually works and makes me feel good for a while then I'm a horrible person. Then I posted on facebook that I was depressed and my parents got mad at me for upsetting other people. So I deactivated my FB account. I can hardly even express my feelings anymore, and I feel like I'm going to explode.

I know how you feel Parker  I been screwed before

Sorry to hear that, and I know exactly what it's like to feel as though the people you should be able to rely on don't care. Stay strong my friend. Best of luck in finding work.

So I'm now locked out of my facebook as the email address I was using has been shut down due to inactivity. Not sure if that's a good thing or not. On the one hand it's unfortunate the few friends I stayed in touch with on that platform can't reach me. On the other hand I was barely using my facebook to begin with and not having one means avoiding the toxic mess that social media is becoming.

It really is a double edged sword. What i did some time ago was that i removed my old account, and made a new one adding only essential people. Also need to be really carefull where to click "like". After that, it has been quite bareable for months now. There are quite few people that i want to stay in contact through FB, so it sort of is a necessity. There is also FB Purity that helps to make the Facebook experience far better.. anyone with some frustrations towards FB should check it out. It pretty much gives a fully customisable Facebook.

Glad to hear your day went well, deathstorm. My day was, well, eh. Nothing bad happened but I'm still having emotional fallout from the other day, and today was boring, I didn't even get out of the house. I did fill out a job application on-line though, so at least that was productive.

Looking for a music recommendation: I want to listen to something heavy yet uplifting. I'm thinking some sort of power metal, but keep in mind that I can't stand castrati vocals.

Hmm. Ever checked out Nevermore? The later albums might be a bit modern-sounding for your taste, but "The Politics Of Ecstasy" and "Dreaming Neon Black" may appeal.

Two days in London for showdown talks with the big boss.  Upshot being the team are so pissed off I have been asked to takeover managing half of it.  Busy times ahead as I am effectively the fall guy if this goes tits.  Seen enough shit sandwiches in my time to be caught out by the “glitz” of management.

You... capitalist! :D

For some reason your post made me think the movie "Fun with Dick and Jane". I hope things work out better than in the movie. :)

Thanks for the recommendation, but I didn't find it at all uplifting, rather just dull.

Too bad, I adore those albums. I mostly picked them because Warrell has a comparatively lower range. I'm not huge on power metal. Demons And Wizards' first album, Crimson Glory's first two, a little Blind Guardian and some Fates Warning are most of what I really dig, and they're more uplifting, but I have no idea if you'd care for the vocals.

BTW good luck on your interview! :)

I’ve had a huge fortnight of work related shenanigans and record breaking profit margins that included working deep into the evening to maximise my bottom line. And that sort of thing.

But that’s done now and I’m having beers to celebrate/take my frustration out.

In other news Moonspell have released the album of their careers. You’ll hear from me at great length on it when I’m not tapping like a yuppy clown on this telephone.

FA, thanks for the recommendations, I'll check those out. Thanks for all the good lucks on the interview guys. Requiem, what's a fortnight? I've heard the term, I think it might mean two weeks, but I'm not sure. It's not a term used in the U.S.

Well, it's very early morning here and I'm off to the hospital as there's blood in my urine. I'm prone to kidney stones, so that might be it, but at least I'm not in pain. Just hope that this doesn't interfere with the interview, but that's not until late afternoon, so hopefully there will be no problem.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
