What's on your mind?

I was on the thicker side for the vast majority of my life. Cursed with a slow metabolism I think. Me and my brother are pretty much identical in size/height (5'11") and that dude always had the bigger appetite yet he had a marvel movie body and I had man boobs, lol. I've always been pretty active too, skateboarding, playing hockey, mountain biking etc. Still had a dad bod no matter what I did.

The game changer for me was when I got covid last March and lost my sense of taste and smell for like 5-6 weeks. So since all food, healthy or junky, nutritious or delicious, tasted like nothing I figured "fuck it, might as well eat nothing but salads and see what happens". I basically just ate salad, vegetable soup and fish for about a month. Lost 20-ish pounds or so (225 down to just over 200). Once my taste came back I noticed I found myself still craving vegetables and chicken breast over bagels and pizza so I've been able to keep at it since, with occasional indulgences of course. I'm now below 180 pounds for the first time since I was like 17 lol.

Zack, congratulations. That is great. You must look and feel great!  225 to 180 is serious business. We're about the same size. I'm 5'11 and 3/4 so I claim 6' and lately I've fluctuated between 175-179. 33/31 in a pair of jeans. I can squeeze into 32 waist if I have to. But, I'd like to be 175 or less. I've been lifting weights some, so I can pretend some of that is muscle, but that would be self delusion.

Thanks Mark. I actually recently bought my first ever pair of 32" waist jeans as a late x-mas present to myself haha. It does feel good.

Good for you. Now, don't do what I do and buy a bunch of 32 waists, then put on a 5 pounds or so and realize I'm really a slim fit 33 realistically-LOL

I wish I could keep 32" pants on. They fall right off. Wife says I suffer from "noass" syndrome. Whatever that is. I still buy 32's though because I'm always thinking I'm going to put on weight and not fit in my jeans. Never do though. Buy L shirts for the same reason even though a M fits just fine.

Great job @zackflag. Feels good to be at a good weight I'm sure.

A woman my wife used to work for claimed she had noarse syndrome. She's right, she her arse was flat and didn't hold her jeans up properly. Her solution was to get some padded underwear that formed her arse into a bigger mound, perhaps you should get some of those. :P

Our sizing is slightly different here, it's not supposed to be but it is, but I haven't bought a size L since I was 14.

Long before I became a fat bastard I was wearing 2XL shirts and more than 32" pants.

I've always had a good metabolism and been pretty lean but lack of training and comfort eating currently has me at 167 pounds at 5'11 and none of that is muscle anymore. I've noticed a bit of a lovehandle forming around my waist. I need to get back into the gym, I don't like where this is going...

I need to lose some weight. I have been overweight last 10 years but I always thought to myself that until I feel OK and can do anything it doesn't bother. That changed now, it really started to bother me. I have very unhealthy eating habits. No breakfast and when I am hungry at work I order pizza or something similar. Then nothing the whole day and then in the evening I get the munchies and I bring out the chips, chocolate and Cola.

I was on a diet 4 years ago, I lost 30 kg in 6 months but gained all of it and more soon after so the main problem for me is to keep the wanted weight not loosing it :)

I got my top 2 done when I was 18 and the dentist told me as he shoved the pilers in my mouth that it was going to feel like he was ripping my brain out through my nose. If there was ever any proof needed that I had a small brain it was the fact that pulling both teeth didn't hurt. The bottom two came out by themselves....eventually.

Two hours after I had my top two out I was on a 5 hour road trip to a boozey weekend of fishing.

You poor little bugger.

I still have all 4 of mine and they have never given me trouble. I intend taking them to the grave. I must have a big jaw which goes with a big head and a massive brain.😜

Had all 4 of mine out at 24, fortunately they put me out. They had to go digging for one that was impacted, whole thing took 90 minutes. I was not able to chew or to even open my mouth wide enough to eat solid food for 11 days. Hope yours goes smoother.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
