It looks like one of our cats is on the way out. The right side of her body seemed to stop working properly all of a sudden yesterday. She keeps twisting her head to the side and she can barely take a step without falling over. The vet says it's likely either a stroke or a tumor. She's fifteen, so it's not a complete surprise that something would happen, but she was fine just the day before and she's such a sweetheart. Really gonna miss this little one.

Sorry to hear this.  This is sad news.  My eldest just got diagnosed with a thyroid issue but seems to be okay with regular medication.

Thank you man, we're all feeling upset about it. She's barely moving now, and she's been trying to hide all day. I'm not holding out much hope for a recovery. It feels doubly cruel since we just had her on antibiotics for some kind of pulmonary infection and she had been feeling so much better. Our home is gonna feel a hell of a lot emptier without her.

Hmm.. let´s add something i´ve been thinking, (but was unsure if i should voice it out. I know i didn´t when it was happening.. just disappeared).

I´ve taken "visit metal forum" as a part of my nightly routine again. While i check other social media, i pop in here too. Don´t really wanna become absent anymore, especially now that theres no more of the negative undertones that seemed to really bother the forum at one point. People got just a hair too serious, and seemed to offer their views with a hammer ridiculing anyone not thinking alike. As a person who rarely thinks alike, thats going to become a problem real fast. Can´t even remember the name of the guy who seemed to be the major contributor in this area, but i do remember he was part of the "old gang" making a reappearance. Seems to be better around here now, so i´m down for enjoying my time here again. :)

Got an exciting show coming up tomorrow, it's the album release for the band I recently joined and it'll be my first time on stage with these guys. I'm more than a little nervous, because some of the parts still feel foreign to me, but I guess I'm about as prepared as I can be. All I need now is lots of veggies and a good night's sleep.

Thank you man :) I'm really psyched, just trying to get/stay in the right mental space. The material is a real challenge, and it's definitely helped me grow as a player.

Happy New Year to all my friends on here. Really happy to see a few of you back around after some extended absences. My thoughts are with our Australian members, I hope you're safe from the wildfires.

I'm an Australian member!

The fires are pretty bad and getting a lot of media coverage. It's hard to get a sense of where they sit comparatively, but I think this is as bad as it's been in about ten years or so. We get fires every year but this year the flames have hit Victoria hard. Most days we have smoke even make it to Melbourne, and when I was down the coast the other day there was a pall of smoke covering everything. Quite a few people have died and a lot of property has been lost further north.

Went to the T20 cricket tonight with the immortal True Belief to watch the Stars beat the Renegades in the Melbourne derby.

Spent the afternoon project planning the garden over the next 6 months as we get through winter and into spring.  Some plans to reroof one of the sheds and replace the floor where the leaky roof has damaged the wood, then some decking treatment and staining to make it less slippy in Winter.  Need to finish laying slate chippings and paint some furniture too.  All starts this weekend with lawn edging.

Don´t keep us in suspense about how it went. ? Sounds like fun times for sure!

We should be getting video and a soundboard recording of it, so I'll post it at some point in the promo thread I made for the band. If you're interested in them (us?), it's here. I didn't record on their new album. It's weird and it takes some work to delve into, but I think it rules.

Edit - nix the soundboard recording, the engineer just told us his recording rig shat the bed. We've had so many equipment issues leading up to this, it's starting to get funny rather than frustrating.

My parents will be going through something similar very soon, there are three sheds and a greenhouse on the ancient farm they just bought and all are in desperate need of repair. They probably have a couple years worth of work ahead of them to get that place really into shape.

You guys and California... it's scary stuff. Are you in danger of the fires reaching where you live?

I'd be interested to hear your opinion of the songs!

Just go to the part with sax! Love the mix, even when theres lots of going on, i get no ear fatigue and hear everything really well.. I´ll keep listening.. :) It will take quite few listens to really get the grasp of everything. So far i like it, in all it´s complexity it´s still quite atmospheric, and the later one is the thing what usually gets its hooks on me.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
