What's on your mind?

Currently 43 degrees celsius (109.4 Fahrenheit ) and rising here in Melbourne.

Once the cool change hits tonight I'll post a photo of the temperature worm thing from the Bureau of Meteorology website because it's going to look amazing.

Tomorrow is forecast to be 20 degrees (68 Fahrenheit!) cooler than today.  Melbourne is the strangest place in relation to weather.

Also on my mind is that Castle Requiem is now solely in my hands, so Khold (ironic band for this weather) are on the stereo and Wild Turkey is in the glass. The weekend has officially begun.

Meanwhile in Adelaide it's 41C/105F and 60% humidity thanks to the thunderstorm that's due to hit any time now. Boy has this week done a number on the garden, all that's survived it is the chillies. Tomatos? dead, all the herbs too, and the strawberries despite all the water I gave them.

The heat, the heat. It's not right that at 9:30pm it's 37.8 celsius (100.4 Fahrenheit).

The top heat of 43 celsius (109.4 Fahrenheit) was bad enough. Wildlife everywhere, dead. Smoke from wildfires, entire. Pain and suffering. Flames.

Melbourne was supposed to have a change by now. Where is it?

On the other hand, we warmed up from -13 C to -10 by the morning. Stray cats everywhere frozen. Breath sharp in our throats. Streets crack and decay under a blanket of ice. Pedestrians shuffle to their destinations in a series of amusing pratfalls.

Winter here kinda sucks but I'll take the cold over that kind of heat any day.

And here's today's temperatures.

Melb-Temp.png

So for most of the afternoon it was around 17 celsius (62 fahrenheit), so a full 25 degrees celsius cooler than yesterday. This is just a crazy city.

Also a hot new pic of the king amongst men True Belief and my humble self has been posted in the General Pics thread.

I've also posted a shot of my Darkthrone collection in the Collections thread in the Photography forum as well. Feast your eager eyes on Requiem and his treasures.

Parents will know where I'm coming from with this update:

I just accidentally smashed a glass full of white wine while trying to keep an open cup of milk away from important documents and a computer that I thought were in danger from child spillage on the kitchen bench.

I'm carrying a six year old vampire blonde in my arms, moving papers and boom, I backhand the glass of wine that smashes everywhere, spilling its precious contents. I yell 'Shhiiiiiiit" unbecomingly in front of my innocent childer, and somehow try to shift the blame onto the child, who rejects my thesis outright and with logic on her side, wins the syllogistic battle, which I concede verbally and with a hug and kiss.

I've calmed down and we're all happy. Cause having kids is great!!!111one lolloololll...

Missed ya man, how have you been?

I´ve been lurking here every now and then. ?

I´ve had plenty going on in my life, started a new job.. decided i don´t want to be a slave for someone else my whole life so i quit that job. Did a life direction reset and studied for a spell, then started my own company. Hmmm.. found a new girlfriend, we moved together with her and her daughter + my own kid lives with us bi-weekly. I guess those are the main things i´ve been occupied with. Oh and bought the Solar i was drewling about earlier, no evertune after all though.. maybe when i get a 7-string at some point. ?

How is everyone doing? I think i need to take some serious time to catch up with old posts. ?

So, a lot to deal with, but a net positive? I'm happy to hear it. Best wishes to you.

Hey man! Good to see you again. This is indeed a Christmas blessing.

Christmas Day here. Family Requiem drove down to my parents’ provincial chateau.

Hail.

Well congrats, glad to hear you're doing well. Best of luck with everything.

After surviving life in the provinces at my parents’(!) place, the countess and younglings have escaped the heat to the coast with her parents, meaning I’m free to celebrate ‘Lemmy Day’ at the metal pub and various other insidious activities.

Cheap beer and cheap Jack Daniel’s is a reward well earned after a three night hometown visit.

Was going to head down to the beach on New Years Eve to help look after the dog while it freaks out during the fireworks all through there, and do my duty as a family man, but the countess told me to go to a buddy’s NYE party here in Hellbourne because I get shitty with the dog and her parents are there to deal with it.

So it’s bachelor life for the next four nights. Drinks on me (and Lemmy RIP).

For Xmas the future Mrs Eternal bought me a frame with over 200 spaces to clip beer bottle lids into and them hang on the wall.  Strangely therapeutic sat here clipping them in one by one, spotting duplicates and bending the really misshapen ones back into form to get them to fit.

But you don’t even drink beer! ;)

Not much on people's minds at the moment apparently.

On my mind, as I continue the bachelor life for another night, the penultimate evening, is that it's so damn hot yet again. It's still 37.4c/99f degrees and it's 7pm! It's windy as well, and fires burn all over this colony. The smoke of wildfires is evident in the air outside, if one is foolish enough to leave the sanctuary of stone and brick.

I sip Jack Daniel's reflectively while a nuclear-yellow glow bathes the windswept trees outside. Immortal blast audibly, keeping pace with the unsilent heatstorm outside, while I, caught between fire and ice, take another sip and wonder at the holocaust winds and the sign of the end times.

It looks like one of our cats is on the way out. The right side of her body seemed to stop working properly all of a sudden yesterday. She keeps twisting her head to the side and she can barely take a step without falling over. The vet says it's likely either a stroke or a tumor. She's fifteen, so it's not a complete surprise that something would happen, but she was fine just the day before and she's such a sweetheart. Really gonna miss this little one.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
