Every day at work I uncover more stuff (or tbh more is revealed to me) that leads me to conclude we are operating in a big charade. It's a massive game. And that the world everyone sees on their TV is not what it seems. It's being orchestrated behind the scenes. It's just staggering the stuff that goes on. And all roads lead to one organisation.

Multiple Department of Defence, numerous 'Agencies' and the Aerospace/Weapons primes. The whole thing is a game.
Given the stakes, that sounds horrifying. However, there seems to be a way in which it is also hilarious - perhaps even absurd. Wasn't this what Dr Strangelove was about?

I’m not talking incompetence, I’m talking smoke & mirrors. Dummy companies setting up to act as middle men for spy agencies in other countries and so forth. All condoned by home and host country. So much for ‘sovereignt states’. It’s staggering.

As we're now deep into December, I cracked my knuckles, rolled up my sleeves, went to the General Chat forum to start up a Top 10 of 2019 thread, only to find one by Thrashman who posted prematurely and now it's locked until the last week of December, by overlord @MacabreEternal

I vote we allow this thread idea life a bit earlier than the last week so that it has some legs. Once January hits it's all about the "Albums Expected in 2020".

I am a cruel and harsh taskmaster I know but in all seriousness when there’s nigh on 6 weeks of the year left (approx. as it was at time of creation) I didn’t want an endless list of spam from lurkers just joining to post one list without taking any opportunity to explain why the albums made the list and then beggar off again.  I think we will open it from next week and I am not saying war and peace is needed against every list but there has to be some quality control here instead of just pages of “here’s some records I bought in 2019”.

p.s. for Xmas I want thumbscrews!

Only thumbscrews Macabre? I'd have thought you'd want to electrify the Post button so everyone who posts spam gets a near fatal jolt? :D

On another note going through the recommendations thread has served to remind me just how many users have left us over the years and it's quite sad knowing this place could be a thriving community rather then a growing one were they to return.

The weekend has hit like the plague in Eyam, and in 90 minutes I'm off to a sophisticated dinner party gathering. It's usually really good at this couple's dinner parties, but they're not metal.

With any luck it will wrap up in a few hours and I can hit the pub.

I'll fucking keep everyone updated.

Well I didn't make the state squad for the national titles and that's fine. Now it's all about working even harder to develop my skills, improve my fitness, and really attack the back half of this season then next season and have another crack.

You know it's so weird knowing that in the past I'd take this news really hard but after recent events it's not that serious. In the grand scheme of things yeah I'd love to represent my state but cricket is just a part of my life not the be all and end all.

The dark lady of the house is insisting the Xmas decorations go up and so I retired to the shed outside and did some work restoring an old iron I found in the log store.  After lots of wire brushing and a couple of coats of rust eradicator I just managed to get a coat of black paint on it and hopefully tomorrow I can get the flat iron side of it painted so it can add to the rustic style of decoration in the house (not Xmas related decoration).

Folks this is why you always have a spare guitar. Was putting in some morning practice when one of the strings snapped. Lucky me it wasn't on the Dean ML that I have tuned to C# but still re-stringing that Floyd is going to be a bitch and I'm debating whether now is the time to send it in for a service and have a professional replace the pickups with something which might give a better tone.

I imagine restringing a Floyd would be pretty difficult with your vision impairment. They're a little bit of a headache no matter what. I don't feel right unless I have a couple spare sets of strings around.

Spare amp, now, that's another story. I just had to take my VHT to the shop and I don't have a real backup. There should be plenty of time to get it back before my next rehearsal but it sucks not having a decent amp in the meantime. Show in exactly four weeks!

This might just be a difference in terminology, but what's an "iron"? I'm assuming either something to restrain your victims or to put out their eyes?

My son has determined that tomorrow will be the Christmas decoration day, and has invited two of his classmates over for an ornament-hanging party. It's going to be a madhouse. Wheee.

Yeah I'm trying to talk a mate of mine from cricket into selling me his Marshall something-or-other because he hates having multiple channels and so many knobs for treble, reverb, etc etc just because I want a spare amp I can take to rehearsals and recording (dates got moved back though since the place I do my lessons through is looking to move soon but that gives me more time to practice). I also REALLY want a seven string - decided that's a better investment then a Baritone since I really don't tune all that low.

Strings always seem to break at the worst possible time...  on a Floyd no less (replacing the strings on mine was a terrible experience),

How would you tune a seven string if you don't tune all that low? Would it be from C# to F# or something? Can't see you going much higher than that. A decent seven string should have a slightly longer scale length anyway, to accommodate the lower tuning, so you're getting into baritone territory in any case.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
