In episode #1,155 of FatherAlabaster Gets Swallowed By The Mundane, we find the wife out of town, a yowling cat leading to the late-night discovery of a dead mouse under the bed, dishes piling up, and our exhausted protagonist off to take his increasingly energetic son on a walk in the autumn woods.

Oh man.

thinking about calling in sick tomorrow because I feel pretty sick. Bad thing is my doctor always tells me I am not sick when I feel sick because I don't have any symptoms besides a little trouble speaking and being tired af, maybe a headache. I hate this guy.

Quite frankly I don’t think you’re sick either hahaha. Maybe sick of work... ;)

On my mind is the fact that it was really warm here today, maybe 27 degrees which is crazy when October has just started. Looks like we’re in for a five or six month summer. It’s getting out of hand in Melbourne, which is also pretty cold in winter. Where’s the medium? Can’t move to England until the kids finish high school. How will I cope with the heat?

So I’m currently in the city enjoying pints and watching the Rugby World Cup. I’m supporting Scotland, Ireland, Wales, England and New Zealand in that order. I’m drinking pints in any order although the first one was Guinness.

LOL!!!  sorry to chime in... couldn't resist... BOTH of you enjoy yourselves and hope you feel better & enjoy the rest of your games.... I'm just coming in from slaving all day in yard clearing out the debris in the woods... soon as the leaves drop here everything will be exposed so getting it cleaned up... almost stepped in a fox den hole too... I've been hanging out in the woods next to house all summer and have become a non-threat to this American Red Fox... now it makes sense as to the places I've seen it knowing now where it lives... Anyway, sorry again to but in... I've had this meme for years and soon as I read your 2 posts above couldn't resist... all in good humor!  Good luck guys and thanks for all the posts... I always enjoy reading your stuff around MF!

Either you're a hypochondriac or your doctor is hyperchondriac in his practice. No, it's really just his way of telling you he doesn't know anything and can't help you. Maybe you have mono or something.

@Vampyrique I used to be a big hypochondriac because of a acute panic disorder but now I am not. I am talking about a level of hypochondriachy that I thought my heart would stop beating if I put my hand away from it or havign a brain tumor when I get a small headache, being addicted to something because I just simply wanted to do something (no matter if drugs or an activity of some sort). I lived like this for a year straight alongside dissociations with ~4 hours of sleep max because my heartbeat would keep me awake.

How did I get over that? I dunno, now I live and just wait to die sort of and stopped caring about health. And then I just forgot about it and learned to have fun again, now it is not an issue anymore.

Anyways. What's on my mind now? Still got a cold like many at my company do. Yesterday I did nothing and I hate that. Today I just slack and meet a friend. My headache is killing me though.

Turns out it’s Necturion.

On my mind is the fact that it’s Friday night, there’s metal at the metal pub and despite the irony of being on the forum, I’m enjoying some well deserved solitude.

I should have gone to see a good death metal band play in town tonight. Second time they've played at the same venue this year, and the second time I have failed to attend. Work this week drained the life out of me, that's my excuse anyway. Had fun listening to death metal and drinking Jack Daniels, though, so not a complete loss.

Sunday afternoon beer session today prior to the early Turilli/Leone Rhapsody show, the culmination of a power metal ‘festival’ that includes Vanishing Point and about six other bands.

Can’t wait to see the best version of Rhapsody. ‘Prometheus’ was a great album and so is this year’s ‘Zero Gravity’.

Even since Luca Turilli left Rhapsody of Fire and had full control he’s turned down the guitar wankery and written excellent epics of ‘science meets religion’ themed symphonies.

It will be very interesting to see how it translates to the live setting. We really need a live thread... I keep forgetting to start/resume one.

Once again life outs herself as a sadist. Just as I'm feeling really good about work and enjoying the responsibility that comes with heading a major project I get smacked straight back down. Turns out the boss no longer feels I'm the right fit for their business and so I've been fired effective immediately (the joy of being a casual employee). Yeah pretty sure it's my lot in life to never feel happy or optimistic about anything.

I'm going to see 1349 (sans Frost) in like 24 hours. Very excited. I've never seen them before because they're finally playing somewhere that's a halfway reasonable driving distance from me. I'd post some pics in the pic thread but I hate to be THAT GUY with their stupid phone in the air at the front of the stage. I always want to punch people like that in the face.

A couple of quick shots is fine, but yeah, plenty of punching to be dished out to fools that film. An extra beatdown for those who film in portrait rather than landscape.

Tonight I’m in the city of glass to watch England v New Zealand in the rugby world cup semi final on a TV somewhere. It’s good to get lost in the city occasionally.

Incidentally, the Turilli Rhapsody show was pretty shite. They played two songs from the new album, NONE from the other TR album at all from 2015 (whatthefuck), and the whole set from old Rhapsody tracks.

I just don’t understand it. Why leave Rhapsody of Fire only to play 95% old material live, ignoring two brilliant and different albums by the ACTUAL FUCKING ACT!

I reckon Leone refuses to sing any Alessandro Conti tracks, which is the only explanation for why they didn’t do a single song from ‘Prometheus’.

Just ridiculous.

Also, I knew Turilli was a dork but oh my god... seeing him on stage I wanted to beat him up and steal his lunch money.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
