Man, the town I'm in feels empty to me right now. The best place in town just closed up permanently, and it's truly irreplaceable as a venue and social hub. A couple other good businesses run by good people have either closed or moved, a few others cut their hours, and a couple of friends moved out of the state... All in the past three or four weeks! Bummer. More incentive to stay home and work on paintings and practice playing my instruments, I suppose.

This is happening near me to.  The high street is dying.  Went back to the town I grew up in the other weekend and even the coffee shops are shutting.  Businesses with notices on their doors confirming they are in administration.  Even the market stall traders are not bothering anymore.

It's such a downer. Time and energy for a social life is rare enough even when there are places to go and things to do. I know that a couple of these places are gone due to mismanagement and individual financial woes, but it's hard not to see it as a general trend. Downtown is just hollow at the moment, only a couple viable places left with any kind of life to them.

It is everywhere I go virtually, which is the real scary aspect to it.  It is like every town and village that was part of my growing up has just gone to the dogs.

Blame Sainsburys, Nero (the cafe chain, not the Emperor, although him too) and Tesco.

Luckily I live in a suburb where people still utilise independent butchers, bakers and fruiterers, but like I keep telling the Countess (who wants to save the witch-cursed coins of our infernal nekro-treasure), if we keep using the supermarkets soon all of these fantastic stores will disappear!

People (eg the Countess of Erotic Blasphemy) will do anything to save a couple of dollars, even if it means buying all your shit from a couple of supermarket chains and everything else online. What sort of world do they want?

My dream is to move to a small village in Oxfordshire and spend all my money (on whiskey and beer) on local businesses.

Reflecting on the festival I just came home from. Sadly, the people were my least favorite part of it, some people seem to be only looking to make enemies it seems.

Despite that, saw some great shows, especially mgla, asphyx, Aura Noire, lehm & carpathian forest. Sadly I missed enslaved and avulsed which I was really looking forward to but my friends wanted to leave early for some reason, but whatever, cannot change it and I am grateful enough that they give me rides so frequently.

I also found it pretty good to hear that a label is willing to take a chance and press the ep my friend made which I am featured on during a talk one night on the festival.

Happy birthday to me. I turned old today. Oh, and, wedding in exactly two weeks.

Happy belated birthday Parker, and best of luck to you!

Anyway on my mind: 7-string guitars. I've decided that maybe I don't need a baritone but that extra sting opens up so many possibilities. I could go for a multi-scale (thanks to my guitar teacher for that idea) but I don't write a whole heap of solos. Oh also I'll be getting an opportunity to actually have some of my riffs professionally recorded in coming months thanks to the place I do my guitar and singing lessons so no more improvised recording on my phone where you can hardly hear what's going on.

Also on my mind is that this beer is tasting good and that it’s the weekend.

Yes, finally a bartender turned the hipster playlist off and put Manowar on at the metal pub. Hahaha yes!!! Hail.

Early November for me. I'm sharpening the guillotine and picking out a nice casket for afterwards. Really excited.

Aren't 40s supposed to be the new 20s? That's how I'm reading it. Although I have the physical fitness of a 60 year old... better go for a few jogs to shed the spare tire before summer really heats up here...

Childhood memories. I sometimes wanna go back for a few days just to see how much of it is just nostalgia or if times really were that much easier. I mean I know I had some problems as a child, especially healthwise, yet all of it seems so much better, even if considering now I am pretty healthy.

I mean playing WoW for the first time with my cousin or generally spending time with him. My sister lived with us until 2009, and before that spending time with her. I remember my mum more stable as she sometimes now is. My Grandpas were not dead. Or when friends came for a visit.

On the other hand, I can do whatever I want whenever I want outside of work, which I should also appreciate. I just hope I can go from fulltime to parttime within a year or so as I don't really need as much money as I make alone and I'd rather have more time to myself.

Hard to know. But good times are good times, so they were genuinely as well as you remember them.

The thing about going back though is that you’re now loaded with more experiences and memories. Trying to relive it won’t work. But it was great all the same.

There was something else I was going to say but I’ve forgotten....

Was probably one of the most intelligent things I've heard regarding this topic, thanks a lot.

Thanks guys! Just got back from the wedding. Everything went well, and we scored over a thousand dollars in gifts, which will come in handy on the honeymoon. Will post pics when I have them. This is the happiest day of my life.

:)

Wow man, so happy for you!! Looking forward to seeing the pics ?

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
