See Vamps I'm not so sure about Huxley. We're far more likely to wind up in an Orwellian world (see 1984 for details). One thing we can all agree on though is that humanity has gotten things very wrong as of late.

1984 is the red herring whilst a depraved new world slips in silently. Beware the Fabian wolves in sheeps' clothing!

Yet the so-called smart technology surrounds us, Big Brother has eyes and ears on all people at all times, the media spin everything we watch and read so one may never tell who the "Good guys and bad guys"are. 'Tis complacency not any mind-bending substance which is the opiate of the masses.

This is all preparation, nothing more than a beta-test.

But speaking of which, alphas are slowly being replaced by betas. Spectrum deltas and epsilons are on the rise. Modification of food and people, drug dependency. The Orwellian move is too obvious. Insidious is Huxley's new world blueprint led by noble science and technocrats.

I'm only now recovering from the wicked weekend of wretchedness.

Partied with @True Belief on Saturday night then caught up with @Will at the Download festival on Monday, albeit for too short a time. It's a colonial nightmare with Metal Forum members everywhere.

Next time, a photo with Evil Will for sure.

Had some problems with my car today, I was going to another city meet a friend and some heavy rain showers came up in the way and for some reason the Air wasn't blowing to the windshield so my vision got all blurry. The rearview mirror was impossible to see also so I got worried and decided to come back because there was still a lot of road. Better safe than sorry.

Absolutely.  I had to drive through some very heavy rain and strong winds on Tuesday night in a fully functioning car and that was scary enough.

Good decision, too many drivers don't think about whether it's safe for them to be on the road in bad weather.

A branch out the front of the Castle fell on my car a couple of weeks ago and wrought havoc. Council still haven’t got back to me the fuckers. I pay my rates, where’s the service!? I know they won’t pay a cent anyway but damn.

Also where have all the Americans gone from the forum?

I am still around, just not posting too much lately due to life circumstances and general business.  I will have some free time soon to contribute more (and hopefully finally get some of my own music written/recorded).

Good to see you still here Balers.

But what happened to @FatherAlabaster, @BlutAusNerd and @deathstorm? It's like they've slipped, eerily, into the ocean, never to be seen again. At one stage they were the dominant species - now only their fossilised posts remain.

Praise be to the weekend. Hail.

Behind-the-scenes! Sounds juicy. Come on old buddy, you can spill a little to your old Victorian pal, Req. You know I've always been a big fan of South Australia.

What could a midlands Brit, a Salt Laker and a Bostonian possibly be doing "behind-the-scenes" that would see them suddenly, and without a word of explanation, leave a forum they would previously post at up to a dozen times a day for years?

@Vampyrique, what do you make of this mystery - a mystery ripe for Baker Street itself? There's only one man we can call in:

Hercule Poirot.

Nothing juicy or interesting I'm afraid just forum burnoout for two of the three and the third left for reasons the mods are well aware of. We'll see our old fiends again when the time is right.

So a brief check of all the tours coming to my home town this year reveals the most interesting acts are Metallica (who I've seen before), Korpiklaani (who I find a bit dull) and Eluveitie (who I've heard of but never bothered listening to). Wonder what's coming to Melbourne...oh would you look at that the same shows plus two nights of Emperor and a Hypocrisy show.

It's a great time to be alive (in Melbourne).

I have tickets to Emperor and Eluveitie, and I think I'll also see Korpiklaani and Hypocrisy. At The Gates are also playing soon and I'll probably see them again too. Fuck Metallica and Slipknot.

I'm in touch with BAN and he said he'd like to get back around here at some point -- just busy with the rest of life. For myself, like RO said, it's burnout. I've had a lot to do IRL, and I have very little energy for any form of social media right now. Also, without being negative about the forum as it stands, I miss too many old friends who don't come around here anymore; the place doesn't feel the same to me. The reason this was "behind the scenes" is that I felt obligated to tell the other mods I wouldn't be around for a while, but didn't want to make a big deal out of it. At the very least I needed a break. I may stick around for now, but if I turn up missing again, that's why.

Regarding deathstorm, we decided a while ago to require that his posts get approved by the staff before being published. It wasn't an easy decision, and it came after years of trying to get him to rein himself in. He's still free to come and go, and we've approved most of what he's posted since then, but I'm not surprised that he's been around less frequently.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
