What's on your mind?

I don't believe this deserves its own thread but does anyone else ever read something and it reminds you of a song lyric? Usually uncommon words and the first thing that springs to mind is the song you know it from?

For example, whenever I see the word "beware", I immediately think of Death's "Spirit Crusher". And I always hear it in my mind in Chuck Schuldiner's voice too lol.

Same thing with "chasm"; Satyricon's "In The Mist By The Hills". I always "hear" it in Satyr's voice. ["OVERRR THE CHASM!!!"]

Haha just something amusing I wanted to share. This always seems to happen to me in public and I have to really fight to keep a straight face.

All the time although in perhaps a slightly different context. If I watch athletics on the TV I just hear “Running Free” by Iron Maiden, nor can I take paracetamol without “Painkiller” by Judas Priest blarring in my head.  A stroll in the park or woods with my girlfriend just has “Walk” by Pantera on memory loop.  Driving north just puts Darkthrone in my head with “A Blaze In The Northern Sky”.  Hypnotist on TV? “Mass Hypnosis” by Sepultura.

Lost count of how many times during meetings if someone raises that there’s not enough time to discuss something I hear Anthrax “Got The Time”.  Need to replace the batteries in the xbox controller? “Battery Acid Enema” by Autopsy.

Was forced to attend my nephews holy communion last year and spent the entire time in the church running through songs with the word ‘altar’ in the title. “Altars” by Altarage came up a lot, but “Altar Of Sacrifice” by Slayer as well as “Altar Of Deceit” by Triptykon kept me occupied also.

Life is just shit without metal.

The Satyricon quote that always pops into my head is something I heard wrong at the beginning of "Tied In Bronze Chains", where it sounds like he's saying "come play catch with me, cause I'm the accuser".

Great, I can't unhear this now. ?

Misheard metal lyrics are the absolute best haha. I'm still convinced that Gaahl is screaming "I AM GAAAAAAAAAAHL AND I AM GOD!!!!!!" in "Unchain My Heart". XD

Right, that does it... I am not going to read this thread again...like ever. I have had too many songs ruined for me after reading other people's misheard lyrics. I refuse to giggle over yet another damn song...alas it is a curse to have a damn good memory and a silly sense of humor. I will now retire for the night in some dark and cold spot with centuries old cobwebs hanging from the ceiling, sit myself in an old moldy chair (after removing the half rotting corpse that previously occupied the space) and try think of something which is not funny at all.

Good night!

Just found out Sinmara and Suffering Hour will be coming to my area this spring. Really looking forward to that. Hopefully they play with other good bands that also start with the letter "S".

My son is home "sick" from school, but he seems to be pretty much all better now, which is heartening and annoying in equal measures...

Glad your son is ok. Hmm good bands starting with S, so it'd be ideal if that show included Suffocation and Sacramentum right? One can only hope I guess.

Mix up on my order of Heads for the Dead Cd box set and I appear to have the limited edition (100 copies) red splatter LP instead.  Still got the patch, sticker, poster and bottle opener and key chain and all for the CD price so think I am up on the deal?

In less positive news we have no hot water since Friday as the boiler packed in and we are waiting for a part.  I am out on the road most of the week also so trying to shower at my parents is a challenge with 12 hour days more or less each day this week.  Was super twatty with the heating company earlier, proper played the dissatisfied customer routine.

Svartidaudi or Skaphe would be a great fit. But it'll probably be some local schmoes with nary an "S" between them.

Wow, it's an extra shitty time of year for them to be dragging their feet on that.

I've locked up all the booze in the house for the time being. I don't think it's wise to have easy access while in my current frame of mind. At least it seems there's a positive step on the work front. Man I need this one to turn into something, I just don't know what I'll do if it falls apart again.

  • 2 weeks later...

The band I joined over last summer finally has a couple of songs recorded. I don't know that I'll post the project here, since it's more in the vein of noise rock/metallic hardcore than metal, but it's a lot of fun and I'm happy about it. We're working on two more recordings, and a local label is going to put the four tunes out on cassette in May - I'm not a fan of the cassette resurgence but it'll be neat to have some physical copies. We'll play our first show together on Saturday, I'm really psyched.

In other news, I heard a bunch of gunshots this past Saturday night - the same gun being fired at least nine times in quick succession. Turns out a 30-year-old father of two was killed outside of a friend's house a few minutes' walk from our apartment. It's not the first time I've heard gunshots or found out someone nearby got murdered, but this one's really bothering me.

Good luck with the show and would be great to hear the new project..not so good about the guy who was killed, especially with kids.  Would bother me too.

I keep replaying it in my head. That many shots, you know someone probably isn't walking away. Obviously there was nothing I could have done, but I wish there was, you know? Everybody in the neighborhood must have heard it. Two or three minutes later I was on the road to band practice and saw a bunch of cop cars rushing in that direction and I had the feeling they were far too late. Dude's kids are five and three and I know their lives are changed forever. Argh. In any case, thanks for your thoughts :) I might post the band, but either way I could shoot you the tracks.

Oh and yes..I would love to purchase a tape if you have any going..same arrangement as last time maybees :) if so pm me when ya know what's happening. Cheers marra.

Yikes, I hadn't even heard of that. That's a bummer too. When I read the news it starts to feel like everybody's dying young.

Thanks for your interest in the band, I hope you dig what we have going on. The tape won't come out till late May, but I'll keep you posted.

How ironic that @FatherAlabaster's first release with his new band is in the favoured format of @Fjara Ghetto Blaster Girl.  The Gods are in alignment here!

Good luck with the band and upcoming show too.

The thing that really pisses me off about the Sala incident (aside from a young man in his prime being robbed of a promising future) is the bullshit corporate shenanigans around his transfer fee and who should pay.  Flowers don't grow out of bones for a reason.  No one should profit from this!

They're shining for me :)

I know, it is such a terrible shame, such a waste. I don't know why he was even on that plane it doesn't seem very professional or organised, but what is done is done. If it was to save money some people may need to examine their conscience.

Well my job interview went well this morning. They want me to start on March 5. I have 2 weeks of informal training/probation before I officially start. They're even going to pay for me to do a basic web design and social media marketing course. I'm feeling pretty awesome right now.

That's great, dude, congratulations and best wishes.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
