Got me wanting to look into the Adelaide metal scene a bit more there Will. Come to think of it I never did get around to checking out my guitar teacher's band.

Probably worth doing. Most pub gigs will only cost you like $10 so you've not got much to lose. Send us a link if your teacher's band is worthwhile.

Speaking of guitar I hit on a couple of killer riffs today just by messing around with parts of Katatonia's 'Without God'. I'm out all day tomorrow but Sunday I need to sit down and record part of it an octave up to see if it'll work as a harmony.

Cool. It'd be pretty weird if an octave harmony didn't work..

Teacher's band was fairly standard Death worship, not offensive just not interesting. I'd think the harmony could be cool, it's just whether I prefer it that way.

I'm starting to formulate my Top 10 Albums for 2018. It's a tricky one this year due to some of my favourite bands releasing pretty good but not great albums. I think the top three or four are locked in pretty tightly though. I've made a point of listening to a lot of albums beyond my own purchases this year so that I can get a decent sense of the 2018 landscape. Still, it's hard to put a list together without living with the full album for at least a few weeks. I always feel like I'm overlooking some classics that I just haven't let sink in.

Hey req me too it’s hard too because this year I discovered a lot of new bands as well my current one is cytotoxin

First world problem time!  Despite being an undeniably fantastic resource for music in general, Bandcamp for iPad sucks big time!  It basically is just the mobile app and so behaves like i have an iPhone in the middle of my iPad screen.  No auto-rotate, no optimisation for the screen so just looks and behaves inferior to other music streaming apps from the word go.

Whilst i get that the mobile market is probably strong for them as a company, why they wouldn’t make every effort to optimise the tablet experience also is beyond me?  Just smells of lazy development (or a lack of expertise/funding to fulfill this basic requirement.

Sigh, rant over!

p.s. yes i know i can just access the website on my tablet but that isn’t the point!

That's what you get for using an iPad. :D

What's wrong with Apple? Still ahead of the game when it comes to built in accessibility features.

We don't care about Apple, we care about giving Macabre a hard time. Get with the program. :D

Putting that degree to use: my son just conscripted me to make a deck of cards with five suits and extra jokers. I can't call it a waste of time, but I'm reminded of the full Scrabble and Qwirkle sets I made by hand out of paper last year, each of which got used for 1.5 games, "saved for later", and lost. Anyway, here's to weird games.

It's Friday night was hoping to head out to debauch the night once the queen of eternal damnation returned from her 'ladies lunch' that started at 11:30am. It's now 8:50pm and I've just been told they're now en route for Vietnamese, so I'm stuck in the castle with the sleeping vampire children for this eternal night's endless woe.

Luckily I have Summoning's - 'With Doom We Come' to keep the night dark and my dreams darker.

That makes sense.

Hey William, your beloved Hadal Maw are playing in Melbourne on December 8. Are you going?

Doors open at 7:30 and there are (count em) six bands on the bill. It's great to see so many bands, but the shows end up going so damn late. I don't know why we do that in this city. The headliner ends up going on stage around or just after midnight and by that point I'm searching for a warm grave for the night.

If they want six bands at a show, open the doors at 6pm and get started. I'm always frustrated about this sort of thing.

It's not great to see that many bands. It sucks. Running late is a problem, but even more so it's just a matter of burnout; unless the bands are really stellar and/or they're playing 20 minute sets, three or four is plenty. Anything substandard in there and it becomes a real fucking trudge. I don't even wish I was just younger and had more energy, because extra long shows sucked back then too, and the overbooking issue seems to me to have gotten worse since then.

Luckily there's a good beer garden attached for outside breaks. If I was stuck in a venue, standing there, I couldn't make it. This is all largely academic anyway in this instance as I doubt I'm attending this show. See how I feel closer to the time, but Australian 'normal' metal is usually pretty unappealing (not Hadal Maw, but the other 5 bands).

Feeling good lately. I had 3 thanksgiving dinners. First was a week before thanksgiving, my fiancée's son had a turkey dinner, then on thanksgiving we had dinner at my brother's house, then yesterday my fiancée's brother had a turkey dinner. I like the dark meat, it's moister and has a stronger flavor.

I hear that in Canada they have thanksgiving in October. Is there a thanksgiving holiday in Australia?

Anyway, lately I can't stop listening to Joy Division.

We celebrated 11 years together yesterday with alcohol and Chinese takeout.  Drank more than i thought as I feel terrible today but worth it all the same.

Congratulations and best wishes for many more :)

We had plans to get food and go to the museum with some friends this morning, but my son came down with a suspiciously transitory and quickly resolved "tummy bug" which kept me home with him. I'm caught between being glad he bounced back so fast, and annoyed he couldn't have bounced back ten minutes sooner...

Meanwhile I think I may have written an entire song today. It's come out as an odd blend of Death, My Dying Bride, and Katatonia.

Unfortunately I'm pretty busy over the next couple of weeks and getting home too far after midnight is pretty difficult for me. Also, I've already seen them this year and will likely see them at Blaze festival next year in Ballarat.

The way lateness can accumulate with more bands can suck but having more bands on a roster does have its advantages. In my case, it makes it more worthwhile to travel from where I live to the towns with scenes. For the bands it increases the likelihood of their material being introduced to people who previously didn't know they existed. Plus, these kinds of pub gigs are often cheap enough to make it viable to only show up for the band or two that you want to see (although lateness could ruin this plan) and also often let you leave and return as you wish. During stuff with a variety of bands we usually leave during the sets of metalcore or pop punk bands.

Sounds interesting, will we get to hear it at some point?

In unrelated news, I'm getting started on a summer research project with the Institute of Frontier Materials at Deakin.

Hopefully so Will. I do aim to put a band together and these days I feel a lot more confident in my abilities. I have an idea on how I'd like the drums to sound paired with the riffs I wrote too.

Cool. Make sure you keep us updated.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
