I miss you guys. Especially Deathstorm, GorboGorboze and Natassja7. I very much regret my outburst in December, but I had ALOT of very emotional things going on and felt like I was being harassed about the most trivial topic imaginable. I suppose I may have deserved a warning. Don't know if I'm allowed to post here after my regrettable behavior.

If there's one place where Ozzy makes sense...

and my son's sixth birthday is this coming Sunday.

Ha ha. So true.

And happy birthday to your Cradle of Filth loving son[emoji512]
While I go through all types of music and albums in my daily commute in the Requiem Carriage, I have two particular listening quirks.
Whenever I mow the lawn, which is about once a fortnight, I listen to Steel Panther, particularly their first album. The songs are great, the headphones defeat the mower noise and the humour makes the whole job lighthearted. There's something about the goofball hair metal 80s thing that is entirely congruent with suburban backyard mowing. Lawn mowing in general feels very 1980s to me for some reason.
The other major chore I do around the place is clean a shower. To do this I need to be listening to Ozzy era Black Sabbath. Why, I don't know, but it works well.

I have a set playlist I listen to every time I mow our lawns. Consists of Saturnus, Novembre, My Dying Bride and strangely enough Primal Fear. Not sure how PF got in there but they did.

Beer can make unpleasant situations better. I've had 5 so far today, but then they ran out at KSmash's wedding. Yeah, we're THAT group. emoji41.png

Was it an unpleasant situation? I hope he had a good time at least, best wishes to him and his wife.

No, not at all, it was really nice actually. That part of my comment was regarding how beer trumped the unpleasantness of Requiem's get together. Now we're off to the after party to... what else? Drink more beer, of course!

Sounds like a plan. Hopefully I can do a little bit of that at the show tonight. Gotta hit the road now, actually, I'll be getting there a bit late.

RIP Killjoy of Necrophagia. One of the trailblazers of death metal.
Wow, it seems like metal is full of deaths of people who don't seem to have been old enough for it to be natural. I wonder if there's something to that. I can't say that I like any of his music from after his trailblazing early releases, but those were great, foundational early death metal albums.

This might be cool, or it might suck - Mike Browning is teasing a new full-length album from Nocturnus AD which (he claims) will "pick up where The Key left off". I think "Thresholds" already did a fine job of that, but I'll be interested to hear what they come up with.

Also, Pillorian is doing a US tour, I might even be able to catch this one:

I saw that Pillorian when it was announced, and I'm hoping that they'll make a stop here since they left a date open between Boise and Denver.

How far of a drive would you have to Denver?
Denver is 500 miles, so it isn't ideal, especially when Boise is only 300 miles. As a town, I would rather visit Denver, but leaving work early on Friday to drive to Boise would be more within the realm of possibility than trying to book it back to SLC on Sunday night and making it to work on Monday. However, just having a Saturday night show at home would make me happy, so hopefully someone here grabs the opportunity.

Yikes, that's actually farther than I thought. I guess I'm spoiled by my comparatively short east coast drives. A couple of hours is probably the farthest I would (or could) drive for a show.

Everything is pretty spread out here in the west. The biggest major concert hub is California, and Los Angeles and The Bay Area are about 700 miles from me. I can only swing those for Saturday shows, and don't do it often because it is pretty far. Phoenix is just about as far, but I've only done that for a show once, since we get most of the same stuff here that they do. Las Vegas is 430 miles, and the easiest one for me to do on a road trip because I already have lodging. I had to do more of these trips when I was younger, but lately more shows have been coming this way and I have been mostly content without travelling for most shows.

Wow, yeah, I'm pretty lucky I don't have to go that far for shows. That kind of travel time doesn't even exist in my schedule.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
