Dammit... Wormed just posted an update that their drummer has passed away. No additional info right now.

That's so sad. I hope his friends and family are doing ok.

Sort of busy.. working nights with 6 on 2 off cycle, new relationship, kid.. then other stuff to get done too. Sort of annoying times, but a lot of good things going on too. I´ve been lurking, visiting maybe once a week. For some unknown reason, felt like posting something today. :D (bit of a party mode i suppose, planning to get drunk today so my mood is.. active)

Well congratulations on the new relationship. I hope all goes well for you.

As for me? I'm so glad I came back here. As you regulars know the end of last year and start of this one, well it was a bad time. I'm doing better and enjoying being more involved. Lastly a huge shout out to the other mods. Sorry I really slacked off in the last six months or so.

It's raining outiside, and I'm trying to think about music I should leave in the background. It usually helps me to focus on work
I usually reach for doom in the rain, but some black and death metal does it too. I can't ever select anything as background music though, music is always my focus when it's on. I can only put it on when I'm doing tasks I don't have to think about, like cleaning, driving, exercising, etc...

I'm exactly the same. When I need to focus on something else but want background noise, I usually listen to a podcast or something.

Same, I can never have music on as background noise. If I need to focus I prefer silence.

I don't know what the fuck is wrong with me this week. It's just one bad practice session after another. When I say bad I mean BAD. I could forgive mistakes on the new stuff I'm learning. This week though I've been struggling with songs I know like the back of my hand. Songs which I normally have super tight and play over backing tracks. Hope next week I'm back to normal because it's incredibly frustrating.

I chose The Cetlic Winter by Graveland at the end of the day, because the weather was particularly cold as well. And yeah, I know many people would rather listen to music when they don't have any distraction, but apparently I'm great at multitasking and I can focus on multiple things without much effort

That depends on the style of music for me. I like more hypnotic and atmospheric stuff when I'm painting, so I put on black metal, doom, folk, chant, etc; if I'm doing shit around the house or driving somewhere I prefer more energetic progressive music, whether it's Rush, Crimson Glory, or Atheist. More chaotic and involved music takes my full attention. Hanging out with my son so much has ruined my attention span, though, I'm so frequently distracted that I have a harder time focusing now even when I have the time to myself.

It's not that I can't focus on multiple things. There are some types of music I can put on in the background. Generally it's either funeral doom or classical. Day-to-day there are few tasks which I find are that distracting so it's not a problem.

It really only affects my writing. When putting the digital pen to virtual paper I find so many forms of music distracting. I tend to visualise so it's almost like there's a movie playing out in my head. For the process to work I can't have any distractions.

While I go through all types of music and albums in my daily commute in the Requiem Carriage, I have two particular listening quirks.

Whenever I mow the lawn, which is about once a fortnight, I listen to Steel Panther, particularly their first album. The songs are great, the headphones defeat the mower noise and the humour makes the whole job lighthearted. There's something about the goofball hair metal 80s thing that is entirely congruent with suburban backyard mowing. Lawn mowing in general feels very 1980s to me for some reason.

The other major chore I do around the place is clean a shower. To do this I need to be listening to Ozzy era Black Sabbath. Why, I don't know, but it works well.

If there's one place where Ozzy makes sense...

The first batch of tickets for that Demilich show sold out in under 24 hours, and the few remaining tickets sold out today in under thirty seconds. I was not one of the lucky buyers. I may yet have the chance to go, though, fingers crossed it works out.

Also on my mind: I had a delicious bowl of pho for lunch; I'm (hopefully) going to a black metal show in Boston tomorrow (if I can find parking in Boston on St Patty's Day, I'll be a candidate for sainthood); and my son's sixth birthday is this coming Sunday.

Busy weekend, I've got one coming up too. KSmash's wedding is tomorrow, rehearsal dinner tonight, hopefully band practice Sunday.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
