I would be disappointed by that, but Frank's replacement put on a pretty damn good performance on the last tour, and Frank hasn't sounded as good on the last couple of albums. Hopefully not having him with one foot in and one foot out will help them focus.

I saw Artificial Brain and Demilich at the same event (MDF 2015, but on different days), but even with having seen both and Blood Incantation, I'm still annoyed that this tour isn't heading west. Demilich put on one of the very best live performances I have ever seen, if they're even a fraction of that level when you see them, you won't be disappointed. I hope you can make it to the show, and maybe Blood Incantation will grow on you in a live setting.

I'd like it if Blood Incantation would grow on me, nearly everyone with similar taste to me loves them and I keep feeling like I must be looking at the picture the wrong way or something. I'd sit through pretty much any other band for a chance to see Demilich, though. I know the Artificial Brain vocalist must be beyond excited to go on tour with them.

I'm sure that Blood Incantation are jizzing in their pants at the opportunity as well, they're a bit influence on those dudes. It should be an incredible show, I'm turning green with envy.

It'll be a long night for me since it's a couple of hours to the nearest show (and I've gotta be back home and awake at 630AM the following day), but it's worth the drive. Demilich alone would get me out the door, but I really hope I get there in time to catch the rest of the bands. Are Blood Incantation friends of yours?

Yeah, I know Paul on guitar/vox and Isaac on drums. They're Denver dudes, and we played with Velnias when Paul was in the band and Stoic Dissention with whom Isaac played guitar. Paul is kind of an ancient aliens conspiracy theory nut, but they're good people and have always been cool with me. Velnias would be a good band to check out if you're feeling into the black/folk metal sound, they're kind of like a more doom oriented Agalloch.

Well damn, Frank just announced his complete retirement from Suffo. I still haven't heard the new dude.

In other news, holy shit, I might actually get to see Demilich on tour with Artficial Brain! So psyched.

That's a bummer, but I also was feeling that time for Frank was about to come (as much as I like Suffocation) the last couple of albums didn't convince me that much, especially ...Of the Dark Light.

That show seems amazing tho, those 3 bands are killer! Sometimes I which I could live in a more "high-traffic" country, we should have had Morbid Angel the last summer but apparently they cancelled the tour, at least in my city.

Of The Dark Light isn't their best, but I do like it. Nothing will ever top Pierced From Within for my money, but it seemed like they got their groove back on Blood Oath and Pinnacle. Losing Frank is a blow, but as you say it's not a surprise. Hopefully they can push through.

This will be a hell of a show. I got spoiled living in NYC. Everything I could have wanted to see came through there, and even though I missed about 80% of it, I got to see some incredible shows. I guess I'm still a little spoiled having good national and international bands within driving distance...

Actually alabaster Wikipedia  listed. Him as a former member  but on his own page saying he still is a member so I don’t know who to believe only one source has officially announce I haven’t heard about it officially on the web when  did you hear about this

There's only ever been "Effigy..." and "Pierced..." that have interested me from Suffocation.  "Human Waste" at a push.  What little I have heard outside of these releases has done equally as little to motivate me to explore them any further.  I am not knocking Frank's contribution to Suffocation or DM in general but I don't think this is going to recharge any batteries within the band.

If you haven't, you definitely need to give Breeding the Spawn a try. The album doesn't get a fair shake because of the admittedly inferior production, a fact that the band has acknowledged by re-recording several songs from the album throughout the years, and the songs are among their best.

Their Despise the Sun EP is also very good but for some reason it doesn't get mentioned a lot. That's the way to porperly teach brutal death metal

Coming from the other direction, Blood Oath might appeal to you - the slightly cleaner and flashier stuff on Pinnacle Of Bedlam maybe not so much.

True, it seems like Despise the Sun, Human Waste, and Breeding the Spawn don't receive the same accolades from most as Effigy of the Forgotten and Pierced From Within. Breeding the Spawn represents the most egregious of these oversights for me though, it's my favorite Suffocation album.

I feel this. We get very few bigger metal bands coming through my neck of the woods. I'd consider moving to Melbourne just for the gigs they always get.

New relationship?! How does that fit in with the whole "world-weary, Finnish, and depressed" thing? :D

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
