What's on your mind?

Looks like you guys are getting Snowblind out there.
I’m back in the big city after another two nights in the retirement home. I’m convinced now that there is no future in getting old.
I wish we were. This winter had been miserable, our air turns to shit because of all of the inversions that we get in the cold, and snow is the only thing that flushes the filth out of the air. I've had a cough for over a month that I can't seem to shake, and our weekend dispatcher who has COPD has a tough time making it to work with hoe bad it is.

We ended up getting around 14 inches of snow here. I'm glad our landlord had the parking area plowed; I helped dig a neighbor's car out yesterday and we not only had to push his car all the way out of the lot, but we got stuck three times and had to dig out a solid foot of snow from underneath his car each time. Thankfully it'll be cold enough that it won't turn into a slushy mess for a while, but I'm worried about Sunday morning - it's supposed to get down to -7°F (that's just over 251° Kelvin for all the non-Americans on the forum). It got down to -5 last week and one of our windows shattered.

I'm stuck inside with my son. He's had the past two days off of school, which seems to be the norm this season. I can't remember when he last had a full week. I'm losing my mind. Cabin fever FTW.

I'm sincerely turning green with envy. You may be going crazy, but I love the change of pace when your whole world is buried in snow.

Unfortunately no real change of pace here. I miss that from when I was a kid, it seems like it's impossible for anyone to really take a break anymore. They gave my wife the day off of work yesterday - the only sane thing to do under the circumstances - but it's right back on our heads today. But it does look pretty cool, and maybe I'll take the young 'un out sledding.

My kids are all about sledding, snowball throwing, snowman building, etc..., so it has been hard for them this year. Even the dogs love it, they get so excited when they see snow on the ground that they run and jump and play in it. Not having it has been hard on our moods. Hopefully you get to indulge in that sledding fun.

Sitting here indecisively.

Half a bottle of sparkling wine left, Moonspell on the stereo, Stars vs Renegades on tv, but I feel restless. I need something to shake me up. Trip to the pub? Can't really be bothered. Watch something else? Maybe but I'm getting used to seeing my beloved Melbourne Stars lose and I'd hate to miss another opportunity. What's the spark to drive me out of my ennui?

Maybe I'll go up to the pub and watch the last part of the game, then come back and finish the wine and listen to some tunes. What do you people think I should do?

I'm feeling the same today. Not sure what to do.

Soo bloody cold here tonight, don't remember it being this cold last year.

Was bad here last night, got really harsh frost (not current US conditions I grant you).  A bit more cloud cover tonight I think so should avoid freezing.  Off to West Yorkshire tomorrow driving down tight country lanes so the less slippy the better.

Not the whole US. It was too warm here to snow on Saturday, it just rained a little. China is really going the extra mile to try to convince us of this climate change hoax...

This eternal summer continues. It's so hot. Always so hot....

I'm back up from the peninsula once again, this time for good. The Countess and Vampire children are coming up on Saturday and we shall resume regular transmission. I've really had it with that place. My father in-law thinks I'm coming back down on Thursday hahahahahaHAHAHAHAHAHA.

So another two nights of Castle Requiem to myself. I'm getting used to this... *spreads my blackened wings*

It's unseasonably warm here as well, but I can't imagine the misery of an Australian heatwave. I'm built for cold weather, the heat is awful for me.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
