What's on your mind?

Wow, has it been that long? Well, Charlotte went off with another guy. I finally admitted to... having very strong feelings for a very close friend of mine called Nikki. We became very close though it was never official. Fast forward a few months to the summer ball (kinda like prom but all years are welcome) and she's sticking her tongue down the throat of some guy she barely knew right in front of me, and only realised afterwards. It absolutely broke me and we've barely spoken since.

Since then I have re-found my faith (I know some here won't agree with me but that's up to them to decide) and have started on a rather intensive self improvement attempt. As a direct result of that, I've whole-heartedly thrown myself into my studies/ work and don't seem to be doing so badly.

Well I'm back, good to see the place hasn't changed much, how we all doing?

As for me, I passed my first year of university with first class honours and I'm now doing a short work placement as a keeper at a local zoo before I go back to university in September.

Welcome back.

Just booked my ticket for a small 12hr festival coming to my town soon. It's mostly local acts but Napalm Death are headlining. Gonna be hype.

I was intending to see this but there are so many bands on the bill and I know Napalm won't go on until about 1am or something. I just don't have it in me to last that long (I've never had much staying power, just ask my ex-girlfriends...)

Also, Melbourne has just been named World's Most Liveable City for the seventh year running, so Relentless will be enjoying that one. It's all a bit 'yawn' for us these days as we are just so used to being the best that I'm starting to feel bad for the losers in Vancouver who just can't catch a break hahaha losers.

Also on my mind is I'm at the metal pub and it's raining outside. Skid Row just came on the PA, sweet.

Are you guys talking about the tour with Brujeria, Lockup and Black Rheno? I'll hopefully see that when it gets to Melbourne (timetable willing). According to the website, the Melbourne show only goes to 12:00.

Also, anyone going to see Kreator/Vader?

I'm not going to Kreator/Vader because I really haven't been following their releases and I'm not too sure if I'd actually enjoy it. Could be cool though. It's at 170 Russell which is a much better venue than Max Watt's, so that's a plus to going.

Where have you seen set times for the Napalm show? Doors open at 8pm and there are four bands to get through including Napalm. If Black Rheno start at 8:30, and even if the bands stick to an average of 45 minutes per set I still don't see Napalm coming on until basically midnight when you factor in change-overs etc.

I have a real issue with headlining metal bands coming on this late and at one point I even wrote to the manager of a venue after Primordial came on at 11:50pm on a Thursday. It's my current issue of choice. Frankly, I would have thought The World's Most Liveable City could do better, but metal promoters are largely morons. As I said at the time to anyone willing to listen, you would never have a sporting event, gallery opening, play or other 'main event' starting at midnight. So why a metal headliner?

I saw 8:00 to 11:59 here https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/napalm-death-brujeria-lockup-melbourne-tickets-35534033250

It probably means they don't start until 11:00. An actual schedule would be good, but I couldn't seem to find one.

I've never got this. It seems most of these things don't start early enough, I get going till 2:00am if you have 8 hours of stuff to get through, but choosing to end after midnight while starting after 8:00 seems dumb.

If they squeeze four bands' sets between 8:30 and midnight I'll buy everyone there a beer...

I just don't understand why doors are so late. Doors always seem to open at 8pm meaning the first shitty support act often doesn't start until 8:15-8:30. Here's how the Napalm show should go:

Doors 7pm

Black Rheno: 7:20-7:50

Lock-Up: 8:10-9:00

Brujeria: 9:20-10:20

Napalm Death: 10:40-12.10am

Starting a gig of this length at around 8:20pm makes no sense.

Just on this, I wouldn't put it past @True Belief to go to this. If he doesn't reply here I'll text him to find out. If you and he are both going then I'll go too.

Truey and I are watching the MacGregor/Mayweather fight next weekend at a pub which should be fun. After the fight we're going to duke it out in the parking lot to see who's the toughest.

I saw that movie, so now I'm nearly convinced you and True Belief are the same person. That would be really convenient, since you live in the same place, listen to the same music, and have complementary special abilities/skill sets.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
