I'm waiting with a bunch of other parents in the gym at the Y. My son is about to "graduate" from preschool. It's a little silly since it will mark no change in his schedule or his surroundings - he doesn't start kindergarten for another few months - but I suppose it's mostly for the benefit of the kids who will be leaving preschool for the summer. Apparently they all learned some songs for the occasion.

We're a diverse bunch. Some of these parents need to brush their teeth and use the bathroom. It's a small gym.

I hear you on this. My eldest daughter has had a graduation for her child care centre as well as her kindergarten (love the German name - not sure why we use it, but it's cool). I tell you what, I never thought I'd be one of those parents to shed a tear at such paltry silliness, but hey this infernal demon of the netherworld has a heart!

My eldest daughter's first day of primary/elementary school was amazing too (five months ago). Parents could hang around for 20 minutes or so to check out the room (they'd had a couple of days worth of orientation previously), and as I was looking around the room I was thinking how amazing it all was and how much care we give to children and I start misting up. All the other parents are just getting on with it and I'm thinking, gosh, I can't be the only parent to start crying here.

The same thing happened at a Peppa Pig concert. I started thinking about how incredible Australian society is to be able to facilitate something like this for children when other parts of the world are being destroyed, and I get tears in my eyes again.

Good times.

*cough* anyway, hail Mayhem and the frostbitten night-sky and all that!!!

If True Belief and Will read the above, I was just joking cause I'm right hard me.

I was thinking about how arbitrary this particular "ceremony" was, and how it didn't actually mark anything and was basically meaningless, and then I remembered that it's the first such event my son has ever experienced, and he'll probably remember bits and pieces of it for a long time, and I was there to share it with him and smile and take pictures for the wife and hold his hand and buy him donuts on the way home, and none of that is meaningless, and it made me happy. Just think how many more proud memories an immortal being such as yourself has in store over the next several centuries, as your family grows and extends its hungry tendrils into all parts of Australian society!

Good call. And it's really no more or less meaningless than graduating elementary school, high school, university, clown college, whatever. As Hamlet says, "There is no good or bad but thinking makes it so".

Yesterday two of my best friends, who I hang out with all the time, just stopped being friends with me and won't even tell me why. The night before we were all together having a good time, and over night it just stopped. Won't even answer my calls, no explanation at all.

I hate humans. I don't want friends anymore (not that I ever had many), can't trust anybody at all anymore. God damn, I hate humans!

You might want to give it a day or two. This seems like a pretty quick conclusion to draw when you were hanging out with these guys yesterday!

That has happened to me, too. I used to go out with these two girls now and again and things quickly went a bit sour: they turned out to be extremely materialistic. They were both goths, which did not bother me at all, but were both single despite being into men and why? Because one could pick out any diehard goth guy who could name the most obscure goth band ever and had a stunning face and body to go with it...but if his income was not hight enough to meet their standards, then they simply did not want anything to do with him, no matter what...in fact they would make fun of him behind his back and look down on him! I have never been into goth men myself, but just because you do not want to have sex with someone, then it does not mean that you cannot sit down and talk with them! And apparently that made those two bitches extremely jealouse...gradually as they discovered that I was not like them and that I got more attention than them, they made up a lie about me and shut me out completely..litterally over night!!!! I did not really care to be honest, I have no room in my life for people who spread rumours...and those who without questioning, believe in them.

But envy has destroyed many lives! Do you think that they might envy you in some way? Have you achieved something big recently or do you dare to differ from them in ways that shows that you refuse to conform to them? It might be the answer, but do not see it as an excuse for their behaviour!!!! It might feel tough right now, but people like that are just not worth keeping. Do not make room for toxic people in your life!!!!!!

Yes Requiem, you are the undeniable poster of the beast and no one whose forum pagination doesn't differ from the norm will be able to deny you that honor. Would one of the moderators please affirm this fact for Requiem? We would all be grateful if you would.

Until a moderator comes in and acknowledges your prestige, Requiem, here is a satanic certificate I stole for you from off of the internet. I hope it brings you solace.

While this is a kind gesture, I can only accord you and Requiem "Neighbor Of The Beast" status, as I'm on page 668 at the moment and previous posts on this topic clearly appeared on 667. Probably better that way, I hear the Beast has something of a large mess in its basement.

How is that even possible mathematically, let alone metaphysically? I'll need to see an undoctored screenshot.

Torturga, you're right, I'm better off w/out those assholes. I'm really not sure why they betrayed me, could be jealousy, really don't know, probably never will. But, as all we ever did was sit around smoking K2, I'm better off now that that phase is over, and my meds are working much better now. My head is clearer, I'm setting better goals for myself, and I'll be able to save more money. I'm working now and will save to go back to school so I can eventually get a better job that I will like more.

That's the best attitude to have about it. I've also had old friends who started being dicks or outright disappeared just because I got a new job, or moved to a better place, or went back to school, etc. People being shitty like that just makes them forgettable.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
